My mother is at Citadel Care Center of Elgin but I can't tell you about the inside because we're not allowed in. She is very happy, and everything is going fine, and they've been attentive to our needs. My mother is very happy and that is the main thing; she is enjoying it while she is there. Medical-wise, my sister gets all the calls, not me, so I am not sure how often they call to update, but I've talked to somebody at the staff about once every two weeks. The room is more like a hospital room than it is a studio, but it is not a hospital room. She is getting a lot of physical therapy. It is in my old neighborhood, so I've been in it many times and so I was happy with that. They have a little courtyard. I think it's been kept very well. It's easy parking and she's got a room that looks over to the outside.

The facility has two floors. A temporary first floor section and a long term second floor. The rooms are nicer and cleaner on the first floor as the main offices and more staff are present. However, if your elderly gets moved to the second floor, the rooms are not as nice and the floors are dirty and sticky, The second floor smells like Uribe, specially on the weekends. I have to keep asking them to clean more all the time every time I come to see my mom. The food is ok. Nothing out of the ordinary. The staff is great during the morning Monday -Friday. They are very caring and attentive. However, it all changes as the towards the pm shift comes about towards after 6 pm. The worse is the weekends. The night staff and weekend staff is terrible. They often neglect their duties, do not change diapers often, and they do not want to help the elderly as much when they ask for help. I would not recommend this place to anybody, specially if you can be there often supervising these staff and watching your elderly family closely.

Rooms are tiny. When my husband, who is on a feeding tube, wanted his diaper changed, the nurse checked his diaper and told him he wasn't wet enough so he had to lay in that wet diaper for hours. This is a for profit organization and I guess they wanted to save money by not changing patients as often as they should be changed. A woman I know that worked at a nursing home said they were told to only change diapers ONCE A DAY.

My dad is at ManorCare right now in Elgin, but I would like to get something that has a little more social activity. They don't really have anything. It is more of a nursing home. I would say they are very nice. They seem to be caring, but there are not enough activities for him. There are just not enough family spaces. There is only one family space. It is so like a nursing home. The reason why I picked it is because of how they took me everywhere and how they treated me. They were so nice. They were willing to meet with me anytime I wanted to talk about anything. They have a really good rehab for his legs. Everybody was very nice. I would say they need to improve on activities to keep them busy.
