My 92-year-old father has been a resident of the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo, Hawaii, for nearly three years now. You will not find a cleaner and more well-kept nursing home anywhere! Upon entering the building, you will notice that it does not smell like a hospital or care facility at all. (Those who maintain the facility are to be commended for their continuous efforts.) The nurses and CNAs (certified nurse assistants) are truly caring individuals. They treat my father with respect and kindness. Overall, my father is very well-cared for. As with the care for any loved one, there are issues from time to time--issues that need to be worked out as my father's physical and mental health status changes. I must say that every issues that has been brought to the attention of the nurses or counselors or administrators has been worked out or is in the process of being worked out. I would like to add that the facility has a new administrator. She is amazing! It is my observation that she displays a mixture of both excellent competence at her job of running the facility and excellent care for both her staff and residents. The nursing home is blessed to have her at the helm! .
