Georgia War Veterans is recently renovated and it's very nice. The staff is absolutely amazing and incredible. They call us if there's ever any issue, no matter how small or large. They talked to us about doing physical therapy for my dad. They're very friendly, well-trained, and attentive. They have all kinds of activities planned like birthday celebrations and watching TV. They have different things set up for them to do.

My husband was admitted to GWVNH in October 2015. It was a hard decision to make, as anyone who has found themselves in the position of making that decision for another person can tell you. After much research and no negative feedback, the decision was made and I can honestly say that with every visit I come away knowing that it was the right decision. The entire staff actually CARES about each and every resident. Every staff member knows the name of EVERY resident and has a watchful eye on them. The community is very involved with activities. It is always clean. The grounds are always well kept. It has a beautiful courtyard with benches, rocking chairs, picnic tables, and gazebos for residents and guests to enjoy. Most important is that it is staffed by healthcare professionals who know what they're doing and care enough to do it.

As this was my first experience with nursing homes I really didn't know what to expect in terms of care. Most people are familiar with the horror stories of abuse on the news, and this had really been my only exposure to nursing homes prior to visiting. Initially my grandfather was placed in a private nursing home, but we soon discovered that he, as a veteran, was eligible to stay in the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home that is local to us. I believe this program is unique to Georgia in that it's completely free to veterans. The care, and facility, were beyond my expectations. The staff was friendly and attentive and tried to make the residents feel at home. My grandfather never had any complaints aside from the food (other than just wanting to be back at home). The staff, thankfully, would look the other way when we would sneak him some real food. I imagine our experience with the nursing home was as good as you could hope for given the circumstances. It's never preferable to put a loved one in a place like that, but I'm sure there could have been far worse places that he could've gone.
