I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My grandmother moved to Hawthorne Inn. I like that it's a small facility. It's very home-like, and it seemed to be a perfect fit for my grandma. They have scheduled activities. Every time I've gone in there, it's been very clean. Her room is big. It's not hospital-like, it's more of a home-like. The staff has been great. All of them are expensive, so it's the hard part.

I visited this facility

I toured Hawthorne Inn. I liked that it was a smaller facility. They have assisted living in one area and then the memory care in another area. For example, if you have a person in assisted living in the same building, they can move into the memory care. They also have respite care. If you wanted to start with respite at that facility to kind of get introduced, they also offered that, which was good. It was more cost effective than the other two places I visited. It was a much smaller facility, but still good. There were no issues with them. However, the tour wasn't informative, and it was actually our first site. They didn't offer some of the helpful tips that the other places did. The staff was friendly and personable though.

We went to tour and they offered a lot of activities there, but they didn't have a van that would take you to the doctor or the stores if you wanted to go pick up a few things. They showed us a studio room and it was very big. You could put a lot of stuff in there. One lady let us see her room, and she had a bookshelf with all her pictures and her books. She had a big double bed and a couch, and the bathroom was very big. They had a small dining room. I think they could have used a bigger dining room.

I chose Family Extended Care of Winter Haven for my husband. He's been there for 3 weeks, and we've been very happy. They've been very nice and caring, and the facility is nice. They are willing to work with me. They don't get offended when I point things out. They have a pretty full calendar of activities and they try to keep them engaged, both on the assisted living side and the memory care side.

I visited and it's the one I wasn't impressed with. To me, it was more like a nursing home than an assisted living place. It was the kind of atmosphere where everything is regulated, like if you were in a hospital like a quarter cup of this, a half a cup of that; they wouldn't be able to eat what they wanted to eat. My first impression was not the best of that. Their dining area is out in the open, right when you come into the place. The dining room is right there, there were trays that you would get in a hospital. It just seems like more of a medical facility than an assisted living where they have their independence, and that they don't help them medically.

It is very clean, organized, and had a fresh smell. The staff was very accommodating, accessible, and informative. I didn't try the food. My aunt had lunch the first day she moved in, and she said it was good. I observed bingo, and they were getting ready to have a worship service. The apartment came furnished. All she had to do was move in. What made it the choice for me was it wasn't a huge facility. It's a smaller facility that the ratio for a caregiver to the resident was important, and I thought that was great. They have somebody there every day that's doing things with the individuals. They kept me informed as far as the process and step by step of what I needed to do. Also, it was instrumental in assisting me and providing me with documents that I needed to get done. Because of that, I am just grateful. It made me feel that my aunt would be taken care of. It was that reassurance, stating that, "Let us help you." It was more from a helping standpoint.

We toured and it was like one big happy family. The staff and residents were very friendly. It was an older facility, but it was kept up nice. It was one story. It was very open, and there were two wings. One was for assisted living and the other was for memory care. The staff was excellent. Everyone stopped what they were doing, came and greeted us. It was very welcoming.

It was an older place. It had a nice courtyard, but the problem was when they showed the courtyard to us, we had to go through somebody else's room to get out. It was not a real clean place, but the location was good. The veterinarian was right next door, and the beauty shop was right across the street. It's a nice area. We only met one person, and I think she did the best she could. At that time, they just had a one-bedroom apartment. With assisted living, there wasn't much of a kitchen. There was only a sink, a microwave, and a refrigerator. The room that the staff showed us was not an ideal room for us.

It seemed fine and clean. It was adequate and not luxurious. The staff was great, the person who helped me was the recreational director, she escorted me around, showed me everything, and she was really nice. The dining area looked good. It was a Saturday, there wasn't much going on,but they had a crafts room, and they had a garden and a gazebo.

Very impressed with the facility and the staff. Residents seemed very happy. We moved my mom here who is rapidly declining with dementia. She has only been there a day so I can't rate anything, but I feel very good about her being there. I feel it will be very good for her with the activities they do and feel she will be very safe and secure and cared for.

They only had assisted living and memory care. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. It was just a small location so everybody knew everybody. The apartments that I saw were clean and tidy, but small. The environment was also neat and clean. It's tidy, and pretty much up-to-date. I saw the dining area which looked clean, although I didn't try the food. If you're looking for an intimate care community, this would be perfect.

It was our first choice, but they didn't have any availability. When you walk in the people actually talk to you about dementia, and none of the other places really talked about it. It's very nice, and the people were awesome, including the staff member who guided me around. It seemed like they would have met our mother's needs. Everybody there loved the director and kept coming up to her. The place appeared to be either renovated or a newer community; it's beautiful. They also have a calendar with activities going on all the time, and they have a piano, which would be good for our mother. They have puzzles, crafts, they do the residents nails, and so on. What I like the most is the warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff members that we met were great.

I liked it, but it was too far for us to travel. I liked it because it was small and very cheerful. The staff who greeted us was wonderful. I did not see too many people, so it wasn't overcrowded. I found this place to be quite pleasant. The staff showed us around, and everything was very clean and very nice. They had entertainment at that time as a group of people were singing. I liked that. Overall, it was very nice.

It was wonderful, but my mother chose to stay with my sister. My mother likes to play bingo and cards, and she likes to play piano. They have all of that. It’s definitely a 5 because we loved it. There’s a curio cabinet outside the door that you could put all your collectibles in. I will take my mother to see it when she’s down here just to see what she missed because I think she would be much happier in a place like this one than she would be at my sister’s, but that’s OK. They were wonderful. I loved it. I talked to some of the residents, and they were wonderful. I loved it.

I visited this facility

It is fairly close to where my parents are now. The only problem that I have with moving them there is the lack of space. My mother does not need to be in memory care. She’s with my father where they are now, and they have a living room with a TV and places to sit, so she can have her somewhat normal life. At this facility, they have a large bedroom, but there’s no living room. It would be very hard to have their recliners, TV, and bed in that one room. But their dining rooms were wonderful, and the people there knew everyone by name. It was clean and smelled good, which are big deal. They actually had activities that were done according to where the people were in their levels of memory loss. If they needed help with eating, they would keep together the people that needed that help. My father is not as bad as a lot of them yet. They have activities that help them to be able to do things better throughout the day, like buttoning their pants, putting their clothes on right side out, and a lot of other teaching. They did even some exercise programs, which I thought was amazing, to get them up and moving around. And, of course, they had games and that type of thing, too. The working staff would go up, give them a hug, and know them by their names. It was like a big family, and you could see that from walking through the place. They did not put it on for show. They have more than one large, neat dining room. The people that could feed and take care of themselves were in one, with a separator in between. There wasn’t a locked door, so you could see through, but the two areas were separated. My father can still eat fine, so he and my mother would be on the other side. They had a theater room where they show movies or if you have family coming in, your family could also go in and watch a movie with them, and a few fun things that were a little different.

We chose it because it seemed to be the best fit for my mother-in-law. They’re very caring people and seem to take very good care of their residents. There are plenty of activities for her to do, she has a very nice little apartment, her meals are excellent, and they do everything for her. She’s going to do just fine there.

My aunt feels that it feels quite homey. The room is spacious and they have individual bathrooms, but no kitchen. They have four dining areas and depending on where you are at in the building, you go to a certain dining area. There were only like 20 people in the dining room. It is set up more like a home. She has been walking every day for years and they have an exercise program where she participates.
