I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother in law was put into this rehab to have physical therapy as she had a cancerous tumor removed from her spine and needs to get her strength back to sit, stand and walk. She spend one week in this horrific place... not once did they have her feet hit the ground.. worked her legs in the bed... yesterday she herself called 911 to have an ambulance come and take to the the ER for Chest pains, trouble breathing and her legs were numb. Guess why?? She was severely dehydrated!!!! Lucky I haven't shown up at there door ... I WILL have Channel 13 out there, I'm reporting the State and to the BBB. My goal? Shut these so called people down!!!!! NOW!!!!!

My father picked this place and I was not happy because of the reviews. I was pleasantly surprised at the wonderful care he got. He loved everyone, especially the head nurses, but all of them. The building is very old and needs renovated. I expect that is the reason behind bad reviews. It could use some sprucing up and many people form first impression opinions. He loved his therapists and his nurses. Care is more important to me than a nice building. The rooms are big but do not have private showers. They share a bathroom with the room nextdoor like many hospital rooms. You can tell staff are very busy but they still were attentive and kind. When he returned to his surgeon he was told his incision looked great. He said his doctor was a young man who listened instead of rushing. He also told me if there is ever a time he has to live in a nursing home this is where I should put him. Okay, dad, okay. You were right and I was wrong.

I visited this facility

This place is AWFUL !! They dont answer the call buttons dont empty the bed pans for hours on end you lay in your own waste for hours on end ! The employs walk around with the radios in their ears listening to their music so they cant hear the bells ring for help. One lady said she would Rather die then be their. It is horriable! They dont tell the family when u or a member has to make an appointment to visit

My father was sent to the hospital on a Friday, I was not informed until Monday that there was a problem and that he had been admitted. When I was told, it was by an outside healthcare provider, not the nursing home staff.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother went there for rehab to strengthen after a heart attack and like many older people she was a fall risk so needed help for bathroom etc The place was somewhat dreary and outdated. I was there a lot. I lived nearby. No one would answer the help call. When I was there ,I’d finally go out and get someone. She was left in a wheel chair for hours in her room. I walked in and she was crying. She rarely cried. She said she’s been sitting there for hours. Her back, her butt everything was hurting and she had been calling out and ringing for an hour and a half and no one came. They did acknowledge the time she was put in the chair and it was hours before. She spent 2 nights and I just took her out of there when I saw her crying. That was the last straw. When you are admitted, they make point of explaining they may not get to you right away when you ring your bell. I didn’t know that meant hours. They need to be way more attentive and empathetic. Residents are at there mercy and depend on them for everything and the constant waiting and being ignored is sad and frustrating.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My brother was a patient for three years at Island Health. Because our family is 7000 miles away across the Pacific Ocean we chose this facility as Merrit Island was his home. My other brothers sister in law lives in the area and would visit each Friday. She said he was always treated with care, always bathed and clean clothes. Our phone calls each week were always met with kindness and consideration that we were so far away. The staff would go out of their way to be sure that my brother was given the portable phone and that he was aware of who called him. We received copies of dr visits and were kept up to date with his care. The staff were always courteous and would help with any questions. His son would visit from New Jersey and was always impressed that he was well cared for and happy. I can only say from our family a huge thank you for all your facility and staff did to make my brothers last three years of his life content, safe and cared for. He always told us he was in a hotel and everyone was really nice and made him laugh. Much aloha to all of you for taking care of our loved one. we will always be grateful. Aloha, The family

I am/was a resident of this facility

The beds are half the size of a real hospital bed. Prepare to wait a minimum of 5 hours before you call attention to yourself. One of the CNA's whom I assumed was mine, because she looked at me the hardest and the biggest mouth. Almost 9-10 hours since I had my medication last I began asking for it. One 1mg Xanax and 1 tylenol 1000. This CNA taunted me about needing my drugs. She left and came back with a dispensing cup with what looked like 2 aspirin, I refused them. I have a severe anxiety disorder. Also, I was there because I had encephalopathy the week prior. I had to be restrained at the hospital because the infection in my brain was so severe. Because of the lack of med (xanax) I was SO fearful of a seizure and having that angry CNA restrain me. I was afraid she would hurt me. At 11:30 that night I put my street clothes on and informed them I was leaving. Of course they rebelled against me. They offerred me money or to get a taxi both of which I agreed to. I sat down on the couch while the night manager disappeared. So, approx. 30 minutes later I insisted. They opened the door.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My ex-husband was in Island Health Center for about a year and a half. It was a large place with usually two people in each room. They had activities like bingo and movie nights. However, he kept getting out, and it was supposed to be a locked-in facility.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My mother has been in Island Health and Rehabilitation Center for about three months now. It was a very positive experience. For my mother in the later stages of dementia, they've done a pretty good job. It has the typical type of food with too many starches, which I'm not real happy with. The nurses have been good to her and she's able to come and go as long as she has someone with her, like my father. Overall, I've been happy with it given the circumstances. They have a chapel and a piano and my mother goes to play it as best as she can. They have bingo and typical senior kind of things, like physical therapy, so she gets worked out. However, they're understaffed. She has to wait a little while to get help sometimes, but they're kind and courteous and when I call on the phone, they take the time to talk to me. They're very nice people who are very good to her.

My mom's at the Island Health and Rehabilitation now and she loves it. It's a hundred percent better than the one she was in. The staff is more attentive, they like her. It's not a big place, so it's more personal. They need more activities though.
