I visited this facility

I went to Atria La Jolla. Atria is pretty expensive like twice what I'm paying now. But it included a lot of extras. Meals for one thing and housekeeping once a week. I enjoyed a meal while I was there. It was a lunch meal, and it was very good. The food was good. And the staff actually waited on us like in a restaurant. So it was pretty impressive. And, it's a good location. I like the location. The apartment had a nice view because it was up a few floors. I think it was on the third floor, the top floor. The apartment had a very large closet, a walk-in closet for storage, and everything. But like I said, it was smaller than where I am right now. And it has a small balcony. The people were really nice and congenial. And the manager offered concessions on, for example, just like a move-in fee. The manager offered a big discount on that and a lowered rent amount for three months, maybe 20% lower.

My mother is at Atria La Jolla, and she is doing OK. She has been there for 10 years now. The people that work there are great. They're very helpful, very giving, and very concerned about the residents. My mother has so many friends there. They have all kinds of activities. They have bridge and bingo and that kind of stuff for the residents. You can sign up and go on trips, too. And sometimes they have entertainment. My mother's apartment is nice. It's a one-bedroom, which is all she needs. They're kept up pretty well. They have housekeeping and all that kind of stuff. Sometimes the food is good, and sometimes it's not. They seem to have a good variety of food, and if you don't like something that's on the menu, they have a lot of other things. The facility is old, so it has issues sometimes. Otherwise, it's great.

Atria La Jolla is very clean and very welcoming. My friend is very happy there. She's been there nearly a year. She was very isolated in her home prior to moving and now she's come back out of her shell and has really thrived at the community. The staff is wonderful and super friendly. I was able to attend during an event. Everything tasted great and was very fresh. Everyone was involved. That was a great thing to see because she was so isolated at home. They just had one of their happy hours. My friend participates in the exercise classes and loves the painting classes. She showed me around and I was able to see the pool area, which looked clean. She does water aerobics in the pool a couple times a week.

Atria La Jolla is the one that I think is probably the most desirable. It seemed pretty complete. I looked at the one-bedroom and the two-bedroom ones and had lunch and checked out the parking. They had a stove in the apartment. It seemed like a pleasant enough place. The staff answered all our questions without seeming to dodge any of them. The food was fine. They had a dining room and I ate there. It was waiter to table. It wasn't a cafeteria.

My parents moved to Atria La Jolla after being unhappy at another independent living facility. Atria was the gold at the end of the rainbow. My dad is thriving and happier than I’ve seen him in 40 years. He has friends, interests and engaging dinner conversations. His nutrition is 100% improved and his health continues to improve May 86. Unfortunately my mom had a stroke and needed to move to a nursing facility. But when she speaks of “home” she refers to her lovely apartment at Atria. I cannot emphasize enough how wonderful this place is - the management team (Kerrina and Catt in particular) is amazing, friendly, super intelligent and extremely caring. “Fun” sums it up - my parents found fun in life again, my siblings and I can have fun in life again knowing/seeing first hand what a great place our dad gets to live in. If I could give 6 stars - I would!

I am living in Atria La Jolla. I moved here three years ago. I have my own apartment and I can put things that I want in it. I have a balcony that looks out over the park next door and the park is just lovely. You can walk around and there's grass and there are playing fields for people who want to play softball or whatever. There's a dog park and lots of trees and it's just a beautiful place to get out and just walk around. It's very nice. It was a big attraction for me because I like to walk and where I lived before I just walked in the streets. Also within walking distance, there's a shopping center on the far side of the park, which has a nail place and a hair place and things like that though they provide those services here, too. The meals are very nice. We have a very nice chef now. The menu comes out every week, and there is an alternative menu. If you don't want the main course, there's always poached or grilled salmon available, salads, and a little pizza. We have lots of choices for dinner, breakfast, and lunch. They have a whole slew of activities. They have chair yoga, and we have a pool. I don't like the exercises in the pool because I get cold, but everyone else tells me they're wonderful. They have pool exercises three times a week with the teacher and there are usually 10 to 12 people in this small pool and they all love it. We have things like board games, they play bingo once a week, there's a dedicated poker group, and there was a lady who's 100 and very active in the poker group. They show movies. There's a lot going on, and it changes. During the pandemic, we're in lockdown and we didn't have an activities director, but we now have a very good activities director who creates the activities, listens to what people want, and takes us on outings once a week. They got us through it, and they got us all vaccinated, so I have to say they did something right. It's been very nice. The staff is wonderful. They kept going and kept us in a reasonable frame of mind. The reception desk is excellent now. All of this was falling apart during COVID. The chef is excellent. We have cleaning staff and serving staff. They all are very kind and welcoming. Everyone is just very helpful and welcoming. I'm a vegetarian and I'm surviving fine. The facility is not ultramodern, but it's comfortable. It's not a brand new place. They could do with new carpets and stuff like that. So far, I'm still here, so I presume it's worth it and it's expensive everywhere else. I couldn't live anywhere else in San Diego for that much money. San Diego is extraordinarily expensive, so I think for what we're getting here in San Diego, it's a 5. You can get an aide, and there are several who come and look after people who need help and you pay them. It's a private service and several of them have been here for a while.

Atria La Jolla was an older place. It just didn't feel comfortable for me. They didn't meet my expectations. I would have liked to see it a little more upgraded, in terms of aesthetics. I'm looking for something newer and fresh. The general population was probably older there. It's near University Town Center. It's not an area where I would necessarily have a nice view or a feeling of peace and quiet. It was just not the kind of environment I was looking for. I only interacted with the marketing staff, and she was fine.

I live in Atria La Jolla. There are people here that I connected with immediately and I've gotten closer to. The maintenance is not bad. They're very responsive if something needs to be fixed. When I moved in, they said that they plan to put new carpets in this year, but so far, they just had their carpets cleaned, but they really need new ones. The jacuzzi/pool area is very nice and they have a lot of activities. The food is just horrible. I was supposed to get three meals today, but I usually eat one meal and I end up having to eat from the alternative menu all the time and cook for myself more than I should. I had my meals delivered, and all of a sudden, they started charging me $5 indiscriminately out of my account without even asking me (in which they have to rebate me two months worth of them charging me for a tray fee). The person that cleans my apartment literally just moves the dirt around. Management is also not good. One other reason I don't go to the dining room is it's 78 to 79 degrees down there and I tend to get dizzy easily. My room is OK. It's about 850 square feet. To me, it's a bit small, but it's still a good community.

Atria La Jolla is very nice. I toured it. It's beautiful. The staff are welcoming and very friendly. The rooms are very nice. They're large and easily accommodate all my furnishings. They looked very nice. I didn't have enough time to eat there, but the food looked very good. They have bingo, walking trails, bocce ball, and pickleball. It looked very good. It's a very excellent, welcoming facility.

I looked at several places where my Mom could be happy and Atria was the perfect place. Everyone who works there is so kind and welcoming and they make all residents and their visitors feel like treasured members of the family. The food is wonderful. The apartments are beautiful with large lovely kitchens and the activities are very varied and there is something for everyone. The trips to local places of interest and shopping are a special treat as well. I will recommend Atria La Jolla to everyone I know who is looking for the perfect senior living apartment in San Diego.

Moving mom from L.A.

I’m moving my 97 year old mom from an overpriced assisted living facility in LA to Atria LJ. Karinna was very helpful in helping me deal with budget issues, and assisted me in selecting a room that would best fit my moms needs. I did my homework, by visiting 15 facilities within a 20 mile radius. Atria lJ was the best value. The 1 bedrooms are spacious (617 Sq feet) with kitchens, nice views, and walk in closets. The “vibe” is good. Happy seniors exercising and socializing. I especially like the idea of their weekly happy hour party. Lots of doctors and hospitals nearby. Plenty of daily activities. The residents say the food is good! The gym looked in working order, and the gardens and views are nice. The only disadvantage is limited parking But I eventually find a spot each time I’ve been there. A good value with a touch of LJ charm.

Provider Response

We're thrilled to have your mom call our community home. Thank you for choosing Atria!

I am a resident of Atria La Jolla. It's a very nice community, and very friendly. Everyone says hello all the time. It's got good food and other events that keep us busy. They have different activities. They have exercise classes, and yesterday was a tech class to learn how to use your iPhone or your iPad. They're entertaining, and they have their exercises, which is good for you in there. They teach you how to do things, and they have entertainment here on the weekends. The room is not too big. It's got a living room, bedroom, and a bath. I like it, it's a very nice, compact little room and everything is where I want it. The staff is very friendly, and very knowledgeable, especially the servers with the breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

We visited Atria La Jolla, which is a new facility, and we liked it. It has a very nice outside area patio, pool, barbecue that's available, and there is a park, so you have to walk off the premises to get to the park. The staff member who showed me around was very thorough, and she is also one of the people that drives there; she is a full-time driver along with the manager that gave us the tour. We had a very nice lunch there, and the food was excellent. They didn't have washers and dryers in the rooms.

Upon my arrival, the first thing I noticed was the amount of residents sitting in the common areas. Many were chatting and appeared to be friendly with each other. I also observed many of the residents signing up to take the bus out for scheduled activities. Lisa Marie was quite the hostess and made me feel extremely comfortable during my visit. The overall feel and atmosphere were a highly positive experience. The residents were happy and engaged which was key to me for any individual seeking a new way of living!

I took a tour of Atria La Jolla for my mother. I met with one person that showed us around, and they were thorough. They took us and showed us the entire facility. They showed us the highlights of the facility. There was a painting room, a weight room, a physical therapy room, and a library. There was a place for people to play board games and chess, so they were thorough. It was a nice facility; it was very clean. The eating area was on the main floor (on the first floor). There were lots of people available to assist you. There were two people at the front desk. They had elevators, which was helpful for people who can't go up and down the stairs. Everything was readily accessible. It wasn't like you had to wonder where things were. Your line of sight was very good there. We were not able to try the food, but they did let us check the menu.

Rooms are spacious enough. Outdoor balcony is a nice feature. Kitchen is more than adequate, especially considering that residents are provided with meals. Bathtubs are senseless: there is a lowered "step-in" area that makes it so the tub can't hold water. May as well make the whole side lower, like a shower stall. Bathroom is otherwise fine except the light switch is in an inconvenient location (should be by the door, not by the lavatory) and is upside-down (is up for off and down for on). Parking garage is user friendly and reasonably secure. Residents seem happy and friendly. Staff is friendly and helpful, including maintenance staff. Elevator speed and response rate to pushbutton input is less than impressive. There is not enough guest parking. Perhaps the reservation system to visit a resident is in place because of Covid-19. Makes me feel like I'm visiting an "inmate" in a prison. I think reservations should NOT be necessary if the visitor is fully vaccinated, is temperature-checked and symptom-free at the front desk, and wears a mask. The reservation requirement was waived when I was helping my friend move in. Now that she is moved in, I was informed that I need to adhere to the reservation requirement.

Atria La Jolla was a very nice place. There wasn't really anybody out and about. There was like one resident in the lobby and that was it. The staff was very friendly, very welcoming and very nice. The place was awesome, other than it was a little too small and a little too restrictive for my mom. She is 87, but she is pretty independent, and this was a little restrictive for her. They are using the dining room, but it's only three days a week right now, and they only have 16 people at a time. They have four tables together in four separate areas, so they accommodate 16 people right now in the dining area during the Covid thing, but it was closed when I visited. What they're doing is they're delivering food to the rooms for the other residents, which includes three meals a day. They also have transportation.

Provider Response

Hi Bruce, Thank you for visiting us. We wish you and your mom the best in your senior living search.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I'm a resident of Atria La Jolla, and I was also with them for a year and a half previous. They sent me a card in December saying that if I would commit to moving in January, they would guarantee me an annual fee of under $3,000 a month. I took two of my friends to move here and for each friend that moved here, I got one free month of rent. I liked the location, the amenities, the library, the swimming pool, and the classes. The kitchen, wait staff, and housekeeping are a 4, some of the key administrative staff a 2, though some are higher, and the landscaping people work really very hard. We have a wonderful chef who has a very small budget and he tries the best he can with his enormous skill, but he does not have the ingredients to make really good food. I'm in a furnished apartment now that's cleaned once a week. We don't have enough room and space for some of our exercise classes. The people that come in from outside are very good. There are other activities that are written down but actually do not happen. We have a word game and sometimes we have someone leading it who's not very good with language or vocabulary and doesn't know the meaning of many words that we suggest, but once a month, we have someone magnificent. Our exercise people would be a 4.

the food service is terrible, I waited 20 minutes to place an order and we received the wrong order. I waited 10 min for hot water for tea, I was only served a tea bag. The quality of the food is terrible, chicken caciatore was chicken a few green peppers and fries. The chicken salad was mashed up chicken with no celery or onion added. My mom ordered a chicken sandwich on bagel and was served only an overbrowned bagel. The hallway carpeting smelled of urine. The senior residents are afraid to complain for fear of getting mistreated.

Provider Response

Hello, thank you for your feedback. Atria just recently assumed management of this community, and we're committed to providing the best possible service for both our residents and family members, which includes an exceptional culinary experience. We also host monthly Food for Thought meetings to gather feedback from residents and families on our culinary offerings – this month's meeting is scheduled for April 18 at 10 a.m. If you have any questions or would like to speak further, please feel free to email me. The Patrician was by the airport, and the airplanes fly over, which was fun to watch. They had an excellent, little place for you to barbeque. The rooms were excellent. Everything was great there. They had a storage place outside, which my mom loved. The rooms were great and a perfect size and had a kitchen was like a real kitchen. It had a great view. On the bottom floor, she liked the place where she could walk out. What she liked the most was that they change the menu daily, and the food was excellent. The person who helped us was excellent, and a lot of the people would let you go through their apartment. The even offered for us to eat. I liked it, and I think my mom would like it, too.

This facility is simply amazing. My wife and i visited and stayed at The Patrician recently and it is run like a first class resort. Jeremy and Abraham were our hosts and did a fantastic job showing us the facility and explaining the costs and what actually goes on.They gave us all the information we needed to make a decision regarding our future plans to possibly stay at the facility. The food was most excellent and the happy hour on our last day put the icing on the cake. Based upon what we saw and experienced we would have no hesitation in recommending The Patrician as a great place for anyone (or their parents) to stay in their retirement years. Thank you again Jeremy and Abraham for your kindness and hospitality. Great Job.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

This place is lovely, but very expensive at about $3700 a month. It's in a very nice area of San Diego and everything around it is very nice. My mom is a resident at The Patrician for 10 years now. They offer many activities like exercise and yoga. They also take them to outings and provide a bus service to their appointments and back. They also take them to the grocery store and to shopping.

I visited this facility

I visited The Patrician because it was in my neighborhood. Plus, I see their van every Sunday as they transport their seniors to the same church where I'm going. In other words, I'm quite familiar with it. This place is very lovely. The atmosphere is just very much to my liking. They have very spacious rooms. I had lunch in their dining room and I thought it was beautiful and elegant. I talked to some of their tenants and asked them how they like it, and they said they love the place. I would absolutely recommend this place to others.

I visited this facility

The Patrician is an extremely nice retirement community home. The building is a modern-style work of art that has amazing landscaping and a lot of nearby attractions that are within walking distance, such as the Costa Verde shopping center and Doyle Park. During my visit, my client and I went to Doyle Park and walked on one of the paths that circled back around to the facility - which was adjoined to it. There are gardens next to a pool that the client can grow vegetables and flowers in - which is a definite plus for most clients in a facility like this. My client and I also visited the nearby Aquarium facility that day. There are plenty of nearby attractions to enjoy while staying at The Patrician. The facility itself was more like a nice hotel than a retirement community. The building looked brand new, and the inside had 1 and 2 bedroom apartment rooms for the clients. I would highly recommend this facility to anyone in the San Diego area.
