I will always have a fond place in my heart for the Genessee Board & Care where my mother stayed for some time near the end of her life. It was homey, not institutional, the food was good, and there were pleasant events and activities, especially around Christmas and holidays. They also had a very good and sympathetic physician who checked on the residents. It is not an easy job to take of peoples's ailing family members, and I can only imagine the difficulties and misunderstandings that arise. I was very grateful to the Genessee for their help and patience with my mother, who was not always the easiest person to deal with. She was always dressed well and clean, and I felt she was in good hands, and it was actually affordable, which was a miracle. God bless.

I visited a friend there Jan 15, 2016 and the smell of pee was overwhelming at the visit, plus no chair to sit in. I killed 2 baby cockroaches in a short time I was there, one was on the floor, the other was on "clean" linens.. In a word "disgusting".

We had my ex-husband at Genesee Board & Care. He was the youngest one there. It was clean, and it smelled clean. I liked the fact that the house was divided into two. It had a living room, a kitchen, and two bedrooms. The other side of the house was the same thing: two bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room. From what I understood, each side had two male nurses to help them, and that's why I felt comfortable leaving him there. However, they had a very heavy Russian accent, so he doesn't always understand what they were saying, so may be the people should learn English a little bit more. As far as the food, my ex said he liked the food. The backyard was cute. It had flowers all over. They even showed me that the gate was locked and that they bought a new lock. However, we were shocked when we got the phone call that he was missing. They allowed him to walk out of the door by himself and they didn't go after him. He got lost. When we went there to ask the male nurse because I left him in his care, he started yelling at me, and I said "You have no right to yell at me. I left him in your care." He said "But this is not a locked facility, and you knew that." I said "I know that, but if you see him go out the door, you go after him," and he said "I can't stop him." This guy is a big guy. Although I liked the lady who owned the place and she wasn't there when it happened, she hired the guy. So, though I felt bad for her as it wasn't her fault personally; she felt so guilty because I told her, "You promised me you're going to keep an eye on him." She just said "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry." She was trying to help us and she called all the hospitals because she just felt really guilty. They were negligent. My ex-husband had been around the street for two and a half days. We were just glad that he was found even though we ended up putting him in a hospital because he was dehydrated. We were not happy with that place. So, I would say before you put someone in a home, go visit the facility, spend half a day there, have lunch or dinner, or show up unannounced so you would know what is going on when you are not there.

My mother-in-law seems to be OK at Genesee. I haven’t had any problem; she’s been there for several months now. I really don’t know the staff there; all I can say is that everything's fine. It was really clean, and it seems like it’s well-organized. I haven’t been there too much, but she's happy.

Right now I have my husband in a board and care facility. It is called Genesee Board and Care. It is a good facility. It is nice and clean. The staff seems to be pretty nice. They are nice people, and they're doing the best they can. The only thing is I don't think they have any experience in dealing with the ones like my husband. Also, there are not many activities other than they get my husband up in a wheelchair.
