Seniors preparing to move into assisted living facilities, and those who are already residents, may find the following resources useful. They can help with resolving issues and meeting some of the costs.

Assisted Living Ombudsman | (617) 727-7750 | The Assisted Living Ombudsman is a division of the Executive Office of Elder Affairs. The ombudsman’s role is to ensure seniors residing in residential care facilities are fully aware of their rights and to be an advocate in disputes related to their care. Seniors, their families and third parties can register complaints about care violations to the ombudsman. Additionally, families can request information about assisted living communities they may be considering for their loved ones. |
VA Aid and Attendance Benefits | (800) 827-1000 | U.S. military veterans currently residing in senior living facilities are entitled to apply for the VA Aid and Attendance benefit. The spouses of vets can also apply. It’s a monthly payment included in the VA pension to help cover some assisted living costs. Payments are unique to the individual, with the maximum monthly payments being $1,881 for an individual vet, $2,230 for a couple and $1,209 for a surviving spouse. VeteranAid.org provides a useful online tool for vets to check if they qualify for the benefit. |
Senior Care Options (SCO) | (888) 885-0484 | SCO is a blend of Medicare and MassHealth (Massachusetts Medicaid program) that utilizes both services to fund assisted living for some seniors. Although MassHealth can’t cover the room and board costs in an assisted living facility, which Medicare can, for qualifying seniors, it can cover other aspects of their care, such as their medications. |
Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone (SHINE) | (800) 243-4636 | SHINE is a program managed by the Executive Office of Elder Affairs free of charge to seniors who are already Medicare beneficiaries and those who need assistance with enrolling. Counselors can help seniors understand their current coverage. They can also provide seniors with information and advice so they can make informed decisions to overcome possible shortfalls. Additionally, counselors may introduce seniors to health care options that can save them money on their insurance. Although this might include private health insurance, the counselors won’t try to sell products. |
Springfield-area assisted living communities must adhere to the comprehensive set of state laws and regulations that all assisted living communities in Massachusetts are required to follow. Visit our Assisted Living in Massachusetts page for more information about these laws.
