Free Assisted Living Resources in Benton

Saline County and the State of Arkansas offer many resources to families considering assisted living. The following five resources demonstrate the kind of help that is available to seniors in assisted living.

ResourceContactService
Long-Term Care Ombudsman(888) 286-3610The ombudsman is an advocate for the rights of people residing in senior living facilities. Their role includes educating seniors about their rights and investigating their complaints. These can range from menus that don’t cater to specific diets to more serious cases, such as seniors being transferred against their will. If complaints include accusations involving criminality, such as neglect, the ombudsman will refer them to relevant authorities. Families of seniors and third parties can also register complaints.
AR SHIIP (Seniors Health Insurance Information Program)(800) 371-9026AR SHIIP is a federally funded program with counselors who provide free and unbiased advice to seniors who want to know more about Medicare and how it can help them. The counselors can provide plain English explanations of Medicare to those who already benefit and to those who need help with enrollment. Additionally, they can discuss private health care insurance options. However, they don’t work on commission, so won’t push seniors towards specific insurance companies.
VA Aid and Attendance Benefits(800) 827-1000The VA Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly payment that can be used to cover some of the costs of residing in an assisted living community. Eligibility is determined by multiple factors, which include that the veteran and their spouse must already be in the community. To check if they are eligible, vets can use the free online tool provided by VeteranAid.org. Maximum monthly payments are $1,881 for a single vet, $1,209 for a surviving spouse and $2,230 for a couple.
Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) Medicaid Assistance(866) 801-3435Arkansas seniors who may need nursing home care but are able to live in assisted living facilities can apply for Medicaid, which will meet some or all of their costs. The Choices in Living Resource Center is staffed by trained specialists who can help seniors and their families find the best free or subsidized solutions for their long-term care needs, which may include helping with assisted living facility placements.
CareLink(800) 482-6359CareLink is a nonprofit that manages a program called Active Older People. Its purpose is to help seniors remain fit and healthy, in addition to satisfying social needs through membership in Saline County’s senior centers.
