River Valley Health and Rehabilitation does have a great staff. You could tell that the residents there were well taken care of and even on good terms with the staff. The nurses, administration, everyone, was extremely kind to me as well as other visitors and, obviously, the residents, every time I visited. My grandmother also didn't seem to mind us leaving her there. However, the facility didn't always smell so great so I think cleanliness isn't as high a priority as it should be. Also, the building itself seemed old and out of date. You can tell the maintenance staff tries everything they can to keep it up and running and in as good of condition as possible, but it's just an old building. All in all, that's why I gave it three stars. It's a good facility to leave your loved ones if you're going to have the time to visit but there definitely needs to be some work done on and around the facility before I would give it a better review.

I suppose what struck me most was the smell. What I mean by that is that most nursing homes we visited before my family decided on putting my grandmother in an assisted living center had a distinct mix of putrid smells: urine, feces and -I hate to say it, but I will- old people. River Valley Health and Rehabilitation, though it couldn't quite be absolved from being offensive to the olfactory system, was by far the cleaner smelling of the homes we visited. The staff seemed friendly, competent and eager to help and please. This was even while we would have family members drop in without a set schedule just to see if they were consistently taking care of our grandmother/mother (depending, of course, on the relationship of whoever visited.) The only reason I refrained from giving five stars was because though the facility was the cleaner of places we had been to and was obviously kept up with, it did seem a little run down and old. You can tell the maintenance and janitorial staff did their respective jobs well, but there's only so much you can do with an old building.
