Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Seniors residing at home in St. Helena needn’t feel they have to cope with challenges alone, as many Napa Valley organizations are dedicated to helping older residents. The resources listed here can help with legal problems, home repairs, meal deliveries and exemptions from some property taxes.
Resource | Contact | Service |
---|---|---|
Napa/Solano Area Agency on Aging | (707) 784-8960 | The purpose of the Napa/Solano Area Agency of Aging is to provide services for the region's older adults that help them enjoy their later years in greater safety and comfort. The agency's many free resources include managing senior centers throughout Napa Valley and providing assistance with more practical matters, such as Medicare counseling, legal services and transportation for medical appointments and grocery shopping. It also provides case management services to help seniors plan their long-term care. |
Property Tax Exemptions | (707) 253-6171 | St. Helena seniors who own and reside in their homes are eligible for a property tax exemption. As of 2022, it reduces the property's value by $7,000, which equates to savings of $71 annually on property taxes. Disabled veterans and their widows/ers with annual incomes below $67,355 can also claim an additional $149,993 (up to $224,991, depending on the value of the property). To qualify, the vet must be 100% disabled due to their military service, or in the case of widows/ers, their spouse's death must be linked to their time serving their country. |
Solano-Napa Habitat for Humanity | (707) 422-1948 | Solano-Napa Habitat for Humanity conducts home repairs for free or at little cost for homeowners on low incomes. The program focuses on fixing building code violations, health and safety issues and improving accessibility for approved applicants with mobility problems. The works carried out depend on the results of a home assessment and may include installing grab bars and ramps, replacing the water heater and repairing the roof. |
Home-Delivered Meals | (707) 253-6100 | Community Action of Napa Valley is a nonprofit whose services include preparing and delivering freshly-prepared and nutritionally-balanced meals to homebound adults aged 60 and older. It delivers three meals on Mondays and Wednesdays and two on Fridays, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The suggested donation is $4.50 per meal, although seniors unable to pay will not be refused a meal. The volunteer drivers also make wellness checks at the time of delivery. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed.
