My mother was a resident here for 4 years. The experience she & I had with Piedmont Gardens was incredibly challenging. I feel that Piedmont Gardens did not treat my mother as part of their community due to her behaviors caused by Alzheimer’s.

Piedmont Gardens CCRC was more in the heart of the city. It was more like an independent place where they didn't have any locked gates. You could come and go with this kind of machine you have to go through (although it made it difficult for visitors). It was like apartment living, but it seemed like the assisted living were protected on their own floor. It was clean. The staff did a great tour; it was good. The dining area looked OK. It was fine. I went into the rooms. There weren't many people congregating together, but maybe it was the time of day. I did see the dining room had people in it. They had a library, a beauty salon, and a little gym with machines. It was well-organized and set up for the residents. It seemed like everything was perfect.

I can't afford Piedmont Gardens; it's too expensive. They seem to explain everything to us. They took us on a tour, showed us everything, and showed the possibility of a place being open. The woman was just nice. She was very polite and helpful. The grounds were beautiful. It had a lot of flowers and gardens. They have elevators, which is nice. Each floor opens up into a garden. It was very pleasant-looking.

I have a friend who lives at Piedmont Gardens. I think they are very proud of their residents who were active in their communities; they are retired university professors. They have lots of staff usually of intellectual nature; there are lectures, they have a library, they received periodicals, they have music available, and they take people to the theater. I toured some rooms, and I was interested in a 2 bedroom and 2 bath, but I couldn’t afford it as it was very pricey. I like the area where they are located as it’s across from shopping and restaurants; it's very nice.

We ended up going with Piedmont Gardens. The best thing about it is that it's close to Piedmont Avenue, so there's a lot of access to restaurants and stores, and it also has very active community and a lot of things going on. They have a lot of music, discussion groups, farmer's market, and the residents actually have a fund where they supplement the activities themselves. The apartments vary in quality. They have two buildings and one is newer than the other. They weren't really fancy. The assisted living is all studios as far as I know. They're very nice, but they're not huge. Most of the staff is very good. They have a lot of nice people who interact with people in the dining room, people in nursing care, and people who drive people around to appointments. In general, they are good.

The older section of Piedmont Gardens looked more gracious. It seemed a lot of lively people lived there. The food was good.

Piedmont was very pleasant. The rooms and apartments were average. Nothing really sparkling and exciting; nothing really totally disappointing; it?s just kind of bland. But I like the location. They must have a more presentable entry and must do some re-carpeting.
Provider Response
Dear KD2 – Thank you for visiting Piedmont Gardens and posting your review. It’s true – we don’t try to razzle-dazzle our residents: This is their home. You know what really sparkles though? The residents themselves, and the team members we have who support them. Please stop by again – we would be happy to show you the depth and the breadth of personalities, programs, and the pop at Piedmont Gardens! (Oh – and we have plans in place to upgrade that entrance and carpet – it really does need it!) Best wishes – Kevin Smith, Executive Director

Piedmont Gardens was OK. I didn't pay a great deal of attention, and I didn't have a meal there, so I have no evaluation of their dining area. The rooms were OK. I think the kitchenette area was kind of small, and the refrigerator was a very small one. The sanitation was good. I noticed that the staff members were courteous, respectful, and efficient. I think their location is fine.

We visited Piedmont Gardens, and we really like this place. We were very impressed with their library. It's a very nice library with good light and big places. People were sitting and reading a lot around there. The hallways were not as busy as the other place we looked at. The apartments were very nice. They would adapt to the apartment to whatever you want it. We felt very at home there. We ate there, and we liked it. We liked this place. This would be our second favorite.

The dining facility looked very good, and what they offered looked very good. The apartments looked very nice. The price for me going in as an independent was reasonable. My main drawback is the parking traffic, which is absolutely awful. The facility doesn't have any control over that. One of their big selling points is being right there on Piedmont Avenue, which has all these wonderful shops.

Piedmont Gardens was OK. I thought they were just fine. They said they were going to take care of the services; we didn’t have to have anything done. The atmosphere was fine. They’ll supply the food for us. They had quite a few of activities for different things. The staff was nice, very accommodating.

I recently visited this community and was disappointed that their was not outside access for my Mother from her assited living appartment, and I had trouble finding a parking spot to tour, and was told there is no guest parking

I was happy with Piedmont Gardens. The food was good and adequate. They had assistants and staff on-hand to meet my father's needs, they took care of him and moved him into a skilled nursing facility and brought him back to good health. The only thing was the building was well over 50 years old, it was well kept, but it lacked a little bit of personality and was bland.

If I absolutely could not care for my parents on my own when they get older, or if they needed some type of medical assistance, I would definitely look for a place like Piedmont Gardens Nursing Home. Piedmont Gardens has three different levels of care: Residential, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing. The facility is located in a great area right off of Piedmont Ave in North Oakland, and the neighborhood feels safe with a variety of stores located on Piedmont Ave. The building itself has great security, as all visitors have to be buzzed in. I recently visited a family friend who was in the Assisted Living facility, and from what I saw of it, the facility is clean, the staff work hard, and the patients are happy with the care they are receiving. Call bells were answered promptly, staff members feeding patients did so with care, and the communal areas were clean and bright. Overall, one of the nicest facilities I have seen. No, everything is not perfect and there are things to improve, but, in general, things are pretty solid.

My experience with Piedmont Gardens was positive. I was always surprised at the number of staff members who were available for assistance. My friend was a very finicky eater and was often unhappy with the food. A staff member overheard us talking about this issue and she immediately tried to address it. She brought my friend milk shakes, soup, and juice--all foods that she liked. There was also an employee who brought my friend her mail and--since she was blind in one eye--read her letters to her. The facility had musical entertainment on certain days, and people who were available to help my friend walk to space in which the performances took place. I've been in some facilities that were poorly lit and not too clean. Piedmont Gardens is spotless and comfortable. People who live there have created clubs and participate in outings to local shopping areas, etc. There seems to be a strong community.

My mother was at this facility for 16 miserable years (1973-1989), following a major stroke. The misery was on all levels, for my mother, for her relatives and visitors and could have been prevented. Ruth J. was the charge nurse and made feeble efforts at dealing with the issues, but her staff was more of a cause of the misery than a solution. My mother simply could not accept the loss of the right side of her body by the paralysis brought on by the stroke. She was fully able to communicate and she certainly did, screaming her discontent with her limitations. She needed pyschiatric help or counseling and got nothing, despite my urgings. Piedmont Gardens have/had lots of screamers. Each case always struck me as tragic mishandling of a human life. My mother was miserable everyday and constantly yelled out she wanted to die. She particularly yelled it at me. Visits were very difficult, but I went to make sure the staff was going the basics in a timely manner. The one thing the hospital did was well chart everything that went on, in reasonable detail. This allowed me to see daily short comings, that I will detail for anyone interested, but the continued stealing of her toothpaste was typical of the annoying issues they never got a handle on. Finally one evening my mother spike a 106 degree fever. Beyond putting her to bed, nothing was done. Her doctor wasn't called, I wasn't called and there was no out of the ordinary treatment by staff. Finally a staff member I was friendly with, called me personally and told me the rest of the staff was going to let my mother lay there until she died. I rushed over and against there wishes called an ambulance and got my mother to a real hospital. She died 3 days later, despite appropriate care. The attending physician said had I gotten my mother there immediately, he could have save her and returned her to the level of life she had before the temperature spike. He wrote this in his report. Typically Piedmont Gardens carefully charted the spike in temperature and the 24 hours of agony they made my mother go thru before I could rescue her. By law, with my power of attorney, I am entitled and was given a copy of the charts of my mother the last week at Piedmont Gardens. I took the charts, the doctor reports and my own detailed account and filed a complaint with the Health Department. Piedmont Gardens was cited for allowing this situation to happen, but little else came of it. In my opinion Piedmont Gardens killed my mother, when she did not have to die. YOU MUST AVOID THIS FACILITY AT ALL TIMES. Just so anyone doubts my objectivity, a few years later I put my Dad in a similar arrangement inob9 Baywood Court in Castro Valley and he had ten of the happiest years of his life. Baywood Court is a 5 Star ***** and Piedmont Gardens a 0 Star (no star)
