Editorial Team

Our editorial team leads our efforts to provide seniors and their families with high-quality resources during their search for senior living and care, including in-depth guides, surveys and more.

Jess Hall is a managing editor, brand and creative manager, and public relations director. Her background in content includes health care, financial services, and education. As a former high school English teacher, she has a BS from Appalachian State University and Master's in Education from University of North Carolina at Charlotte. 

Jess brings her variety of expertise to support her strong connection to Caring’s mission. She’s had the privilege of loving three grandparents and four great-grandparents for a significant portion of her life, giving her early and frequent insight into the value and importance of senior care options and the resources required to make an informed decision.

We work with seasoned experts in the fields of geriatrics, care management, and various medical specialties to encompass the many facets of caregiving and senior living.  Our collaborators review and contribute to our content to ensure its validity and relevance, helping us provide guidance and support for our audience. Experts have various degrees of involvement in our content creation, but all provide invaluable expertise and industry knowledge.

Mela Furgerson is an Occupational Therapist with over 20 years of health care experience. As an Occupational Therapist, she has specialized in the geriatric population in various practice settings including SNF, ALF, ILF, Home Health and Adult Day Care. Mela is knowledgeable in state and federal practice guidelines and Medicare/Medicaid service delivery.

Our authors are dedicated to ensuring that seniors and their loved ones have the most accurate and helpful information that enables them to make informed senior living and senior care decisions.

Pilar Martland double-majored as an undergraduate at UC Davis and earned bachelor’s degrees in English and science. Following graduation, she spent two years as an AmeriCorps member working in the public school systems of California and Washington. She then completed a master's degree in education and became the author of multiple children's books.  

Pilar has spent the past several years focusing on raising her family while continuing to pursue work on a freelance basis as a writer, editor, researcher, and fact-checker. She strives to make a positive difference by spreading awareness and empowering others through research-backed, educational, and informative content.

Rachel Lustbader is a writer and editor with a background in healthcare and technology. Her work has been published on websites including HealthCare.com, BiteSizeBio.com, BetterHelp.com, Caring.com, and PayingforSeniorCare.com. She studied health science and public health at Boston University.

Both of Rachel’s grandmothers had very positive experiences in senior living communities, and Rachel saw firsthand the impact that kind, committed caregivers and community managers can have on seniors’ and their family members’ lives. With her work at Caring, Rachel hopes to help other families find communities, caregivers, and at-home products that benefit elderly loved ones and make life less stressful for family caregivers
