The rooms at Oak Park Place Nakoma were very small. My husband was a big man and I don't know how he could fit in that room. The hospital beds were very small. I don't think he could turn over. The rooms were very clean, but the window faced a brick wall outside, which was disturbing to me. I didn't like that, but the whole place was clean. We met a doctor who worked there and then the woman who gave me the tour who was very nice and very helpful. Cleanliness was fine. I didn't see any problems with that.

I toured Oak Park Place Nakoma. Sue, the director, was the most kind, caring, and generous with the time of any of the people. She was the most proactive in terms of follow-up and not pressuring you at all but just really being in it for the people. It's apparent that she cares about all the people involved and that they truly care about the residents and their families. It was a very good comprehensive tour. In terms of the condition of the place, I would say it was really nice and well-maintained. It's like a newer facility and it's nice looking. They have some nice communal areas. Currently, the average age of their residents is older than my father-in-law who has early-onset dementia. A lot of the patients there were in a little further and later stages of dementia, so that was a negative for us. Part of why we're looking at centers is so that my father-in-law can have socialization, but if you have a lot of bedridden or wheelchair-bound patients that aren't as social with the activities, that makes it harder. Their memory care unit isn't on the first floor, it's on the second floor, so their only outdoor space is a concrete balcony versus other places we toured that had memory care that had an outdoor patio with some green space. Since nature is a huge love of my father-in-law, that's a big thing for us.

The salesperson at Madison West Nakoma - Oak Park Place was very helpful. The food was a little more limited than in the other place. There is a single menu and if you don't like it, they have alternatives that you can order. The activities looked nice. I went into the activity room. There were paintings, and there was a plant room. It appeared nice. They have a library, a gym, and a hair salon. I'm in a wheelchair and I was looking at studios. There was a corner room that looked nice and that would be the one I was interested in, but it would be great for someone not in a wheelchair. The non-corner room had some tight spaces for me and my chair. The facility was clean. The bottom floor had a lot of nice rooms to go to read or have people with you. Just in the Sunday paper, they have the best senior living places and Oak Park Place was like number three in the City of Madison, so that was pretty good.
