I visited this facility

Living 2 hours away from my 86 year old mother, I had to make a visit to Ashland and make that decision no daughter ever wants to make, and that was to place mom in a nursing home. The other facility in Ashland was rather old and run down, and when I visited the staff left me walk around the halls and nobody even stopped to see why I was there or if I needed help. The Ashland Health facility smelled badly of urine and I knew instantly it was not a place I wanted my loving mother. I then visited the Court facility in Ashland. It was on a weekend, staff looked busy but a nurse stopped immediately and walked me through the facility. Much more modern and taken care of than the Ashland Health facility. It smelled clean, and the patients looked happy. Such a beautiful and spacious facility. I was told they were part of a corporation that owned both of the Ashland facilities, but the Court Manor facility in my opinion would be the place to be. Although I didn’t end up having my mom admit as I chose to move her closer to me, this facility without a doubt would have been the place. Mom would have absolutely loved the outdoor area I was shown that is apparently a garden in the summer. Thank you to the kind staff that stopped everything they were doing to show me around and answer my questions. Mom misses Ashland and I may have to make a decision to have her return to the area despite the distance between us. If that happens the Court facility in Ashland will be getting a call immediately from me. That may be happening soon as I’m doing my research again now just in case in Ashland, Wisconsin.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My aunt was diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimer's in the 90's. It runs in the family so it wasn't too much of surprise, but the onset was earlier than most. For the first 3 years she lived at home, then as it got worse, she moved into a nursing home, however, the nursing home she moved into was not equipped to handle her Alzheimer's. They were open and honest about the problem and even did some research to help find a good place for her. They suggested two places, of which one was Court Manor in Ashland, WI, a Golden Living Center. At first my family was hesitant about a "chain", but we were pleasantly surprised by the walk-through. The site director and two of the memory specialists they have met with us on our walkthrough. They discussed what they did differently and demonstrated they knew what they were talking about. While our focus was on the ability of the site to manage my aunt, we were impressed by the other amenities, a resident garden(my aunt still loves gardening), workout room and an on-site hairdresser. My aunt has lived here now for nearly 10 years. Her memory has been relatively stable the last 5 years and she is very happy here.

I visited this facility

It seemed like a nice enough place, especially considering how dumpy and old/poor most of the places in Ashland are. It was pretty small, and there seemed to be a high staff-to-patient (client?) ratio. It smelled a little cleaner than the place where my grandma stayed, too. There are always tons of flowers outside of it during the summer, and I saw they still have flowers and plants in the winter, too. Most significantly, the residents seemed mostly pretty content, or at least more than I've seen or heard of in this kind of establishment. They made more (friendly, not hostile) eye contact with us than the residents in my grandma's place did.
