My mother is doing rehab at Beckley Healthcare Center. It's been OK. I've had to stay after them about doing certain things, but I think you have to do that in any facility. It's close to my home. It's only 20 minutes from where I live, so that makes it convenient for me to go in a lot and check on her. It seems like she's satisfied there. Her room is good. It's all one level and it's all convenient to get to. It has different wings and it's well taken care of. Just like every place now, it seems like they don't have enough care because they're shorthanded, but they do take good care of her. If she needs anything, we just have to ask and they'll get it. The staff is very friendly and very nice. Mom complains about the food, but it looks good to me. It looks well balanced, and it's food that she's used to. It's not fancy food. It's more like meat and potato type stuff. She has to have her meat minced, so it looks the same every time she gets it, whether it's ham or turkey or chicken. It looks like it's the same type of meat every time, but it does taste different. It's a good diet for them.

We had a family member in there for 4 months in 2016...they were alert & oriented & had no skin breakdown when admitted. When he was sent out we found he had a stage 3 bedsore. He had trouble swallowing & a speech therapist saw him & put him on a pureed diet. Next thing you know he was sent to the hospice house without even notifying us. We found out a nurse in charge was feeding him foods like hamburger & things she brought from the outside. He had aspirated the food & died not to long after. I tried to talk to management but met with defenseness. Did not seem concerned about the things that were happening in the facility. They never had enough help.

If I could rate this facility a zero, I would. DO NOT TAKE your loved ones here. I am fighting to get my mother released from this facility. She initially went there for rehab, and was walking with a walker, having conversations and enjoyed a quality of life. Now, she is confined to a wheelchair, can barely have a conversation, and is non-responsive to most people. The Administration in this facility (Social Worker) mainly, is the rudest, unprofessional person I have ever encountered. She needs to be retrained or replaced. The staff is lacking, the place is filthy and I fear my mother is going to die in there. Twice she was transported to the hospital via ambulance and slept for nearly 2 days. We thought she was on the verge of death, but once she woke up, began talking as if nothing happened. I suspect drugs were to blame. I found her 1 morning in the community room alone, hair sopping wet, shivering with no sweater on, and had no been given any breakfast. We have spent an enormous amount of money on clothes, (they get stolen), bleach splotches on them, and they once tried to give her custom made blanket away for a bingo prize, after we asked about it for several weeks. They do not fix her hair, match her clothes and she looks really bad everyday and depressed most days. Yes, they have bingo and other things for the patients to do, but I do not consider that any quality of life.

My mother was in Harper Mills (Heartland of Beckley) for 2 1/2 weeks. She was in there three different times -- twice for rehab and then once when nurses were set up in the home -- and every time they were excellent. They worked with me in every way. They did rehab with her and took care of her. She was able to come home and live on her own again. They had a lot of activities for them. They made different kinds of jewelry, and they played bingo. My mom was happy there. They were just really good with her and friendly. They talked to her and made her feel like a person.

Mom was at Harper Mills (Heartland of Beckley). She didn't like it at all, and we didn’t care for it, either. She felt they didn’t respond to her needs very quickly. I think they were short staffed, and the place is depressing, as well.

I am a member of an organization in the Beckley Area. We were trying to do some good for the residence at a holiday time. We got complete approval from the Administration; the Activity Clerk & Assistant Clerk. We show up with Cookies, Candy (individually wrapped, hard and soft Russell Stover Candies; and asked that each be put on the meal tray the day of the holiday. Much to our surprise the cookies. candies, plastic eggs were never given to the residence. Later we were told that the residence could not have hard candies; we dealt with that; we were told that they would take the hard candy out of the eggs and give the eggs to the residence; the administration told us that, once again. Needless to say, we do not know who benefited from the cookies, eggs, or candy, but we know that the resident people living in the Heartland Nursing Home, in Beckley, WV did not get any of this. I revisited the nursing home three days in a row; I have 3 good friends there and an Aunt, and double checked each day with them; no one knows what the right had is doing or where the goodies or eggs went. How sad. It cost us a lot to do this, just trying to do good.

Heartland of Beckley provides short term rehab, long term care and everything in between. Heartland of Beckley even has a Pharmacist that is in the facility at least 2 days a week to perform comprehensive medication management to ensure that the patients medications are being safely monitored and adjusted. I recommend this facility highly.

While visiting my family and friends the staff was really good with the residients. My great grandpaw was a very hard person to be around due to his mind going. But the staff all was patient with him and help him the best that they could. The facility was always clean. AS soon as you walked in the door you knew that your loved ones was taken care of. There billing department was wonderful the women in there really knew what they were doing and allways there to answer any finiancial question my family had. There was all ways activitys for them to do and between singings and crafts. You could just really tell that the staff really cared about the patients and loved them. I would highly recomend them to anyone that has an aging family member. It is a great and wonderful place for your loved ones to live out the remaining of there lives

I really feel this is a great place to enroll anyone that is elderly and no longer able to attend to themselves in a peaceful daily manner. When we get old its hard to accept the things that we no longer can do like we once did before. At heartland they make you feel capable and in control. Unlike most Nursing homes Heartland takes care of there patients and gives them the love and kindness these people deserve. I would recommend Heartland to any one.

The rooms are small and the bathroms were dirty. They keep their patients so drugged they can't do their therapy adequately. My father was not fed properly or given enough fluids. He was admitted to a hospital due to dehydration and being nonresponsive. Now that the medicines have been discontinued and he has been fed he is starting to do better. I am not sending him back there!
