My aunt is here and has been for almost a week and she describes her stay so far as “F’d up”…first off she is a retired nurse and has served her community of Portsmouth, Virginia well, for about 36 years before she retired; from CNA to LPL, she is the reason I am a nurse and I have been for 15 years…but they wouldn’t know that because they don’t take the time to get to know their patients…my aunt is blind and bed bound. She is on the heavier side so she is a two person assist. When they turn her, the leave her for hours until she hollers for help. They do not medicate her for pain when she asks. They won’t give her Tylenol saying she is allergic when that’s mainly the only thing she can take..Narcotics constipated her so bad she went to ER and now this nursing home. Nurse was very nasty last night, because I had questions for her and she got nasty when she didn’t want to answer them. Which the questions were like, so it’s 6:45 pm and this is your first time seeing my aunt? Her response was, yes! I asked her so you been there since 3:00 and you haven’t seen her yet? She said yes, then said well second I saw her earlier. So I asked her when you saw here why didn’t you give her pain medicine and she said nobody told her she wanted pain medicine..but she just said she saw her! So I asked when you saw her (“if you saw her”) you would have known she was in pain she can make her own needs known..so she got nasty with me and said she didn’t have time…she later apologized to my aunt…she did so nasty trust me my aunt don’t want it…but the nurse said I apologize to “you” Mrs. Small. It’s not your fault we a short staff..she said she was working from two carts, etc…My thing is this, my aunt is blind and if my uncle wasn’t there throughout the day there is no telling what they would do to her..just do your job! My aunt arrived back to the faculty after dialysis, 1:50 pm…she called me at 3:00 to report to me that she was still in top of her mattress with no sheet or anything, and in pain!!! (I was unable to receive that message from her due to her phone not working properly, she could not hear me) But that nurse claimed she saw her around 4:00….the therapist (a guy I believe she said assisted her, thank God for you sir! We are not asking for 5 star treatment! Just the bare minimum at the very least. Wash face in the morning brush teeth before breakfast, clean diaper when soiled…again she is a dialysis patient she doesn’t urinate much, check on her; she is blind for crying out loud! It’s sad! The nurse who had her last night said her name was Taleshia and this her second day…but nursing is nursing doesn’t matter where you work…some things are common sense…I would have rathered she own her stuff and apologize and keep it moving! That would have been the right thing to do instead of being nasty with me since I’m concerned about my aunt whom I have several reasons to be….so here we are! Call placed to DON this morning! I am not about to play with this place! They will respect my aunt!! Also they do NOT let her know what they are doing before they do it…she is blind!!!!!! Never heard such a thing!!! You are to let ALL patients know what you are in their presence for and especially before you render services! They do NOT answer call bell. Some of the cna’s place her food in front of her and leave it there, know she is blind! Thank you to Mrs. Sylvonia, for all you do/have done for my aunt! My aunt named one more cna that knows me, I am assuming she was good to my aunt as well, not sure her name…but thank you to that staff that actually does and like their job. Dietary keeps sending food that she does not eat, it’s listed on her preference and dislikes, they send food her doctor told her not to eat over and over, and she said the food is horrible…if they go by her preference it would be much more simple…therapy is ok I guess…I know she did not receive her full therapy session. They guy therapist told her she can do some before and the rest when she comes back but that never happened cause they never got her together in bed after dialysis…she is there for therapy only so they need to focus on her discharge…once her time is up, I am going to let them know that she hasn’t receive all of her time for therapy so they might wanna get on top of that!!! I just need all staff that comes in contact with my aunt to know that she matters!!! She has family that loves her and they can’t treat her any kind of way!!! She demands respect and she deserves the proper care that they are being paid to give her!!!! It is sooooo much more that I can say but for now, I won’t! I pray that my aunt gets results from this review and not treated worse! In Jesus name, Amen! Don’t mess with God’s property! She is covered so we are not worried!!! Quick update!! Called back before posting this review to speak to the DON again but still no answer. Called at 8:23 and 9:04 and again at 9:08 to speak with Administrator, on March 11, 2025. Message left for either to return call at their earliest convenience, will see how this goes

They be sitting laughing but not caring for your love ones pray that none of there family members have to go tru this. They really need caring people to work here , qualified staff to work . U there for one thing and u get sick there something is wrong! They need the State to come in or health Department to do a walk thru

This is by far the worst place your loved one could end up in. Not only is it dreary, the place is run down but the care that residents receive is unimaginable. They are un-caring, loud and obnoxious, and don't have concern for your loved one or their visitor. Do your research before you choose this place, thank God our loved one was finally transferred out of here.

WIth my loved one needing care, I visited Golden Living Center in Portsmouth. It was awful. I've spent many years dealing with family members in facilities of this type, but this was the first time I literally gagged from the smells, not on one, but TWO halls. This place is dark and depressing, and not suitable for anybody that you love. How very disappointing.

My sister has the say where mom goes, and she chose Golden Livingcenter. I wasn't very happy with it because I didn't feel that they took good care of mom . She has lost quite a bit of weight. No one was helping her eat. She was 115 lbs. when she went in and now she's only 97 lbs. so that's not good. I think they need more help and qualified staff to work with dementia. We're going to move her to an assisted living facility.

My father entered Golden Living in May of 2009. I liked the facility for the most part. On one side there was the assisted living, and the other side was a nursing home. I liked the fact that it was a place that an elder could spend the remainder of their life. The staff was also very friendly. I think my only complaint was the horrible smell coming from some of the rooms from time to time when I would walk through the nursing home side to get to the payment office. I think there should be more separation between the two wings. However, I understand that these things are to be expected in this type of facility. I also did not care for the color of the walls. It was very pink, not that I am not a fan of the color pink, but sometimes there is such a thing as too much pink. I also did not care for the color of the floor tile. All in all, I think that this facility is probably the best in the area. I think that the best thing about them is that they remain in constant contact with the residents and their families. They treat each and every person like a human being, and give the elders the respect that they deserve. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.
