My mom is at Karolwood Gardens Norfolk. However, my mother is in rehab again and we'll be there for quite some time before she's able to go back to Karolwood. She has not been there enough to be able to enjoy living there yet, which is a real shame. They have meals. When she was not well enough to go to the dining room, they brought her her meals. They do laundry service. They have activities for the residents. It's a nice facility. The staff there are very friendly. They seem to genuinely care about the residents. I knew they were hiring some more staff, which is always helpful to have more. In terms of cleanliness, it is very clean. In general, it's in good condition. I think it is a great place. I've had no reason to believe it's not. I've not eaten there, I haven't been there on a regular basis, and I live 750 miles away. But I would not have let my mother live there and be this far away if I didn't think that she would be well taken care of and safe.

Karolwood Gardens Norfolk was clean. They were helpful. It had good access for handicapped people. It was a basic home for senior citizens and the staff was friendly. When I looked at it, it wasn't worn down. It was well taken care of. The maintenance was good. I looked at the surrounding areas and just thought that I wanted to be there and it would have been safe for me to be there. They spoke about the place well. They weren't like salesmen. They told you like it was. I just didn't eat the food.

I would never send my dad to Karolwood Gardens Norfolk. I'm surprised that that business is still running right now. The young lady that showed me around was excellent. As soon as I walked in the door, the employees had issues with their checks and there was a commotion. The facility needed an upgrade. I wouldn't even send a dog there. The room that they had was unset. I walked into an empty room, and it looked like the heater that they had there was off. It just looked stale and old. The outside park area was overgrown. The staff I interacted with was very courteous, but she wasn't as thorough. She wasn't the one that initially, as she stated, was supposed to be there to do the tour. She was the secretary or an admin person there, but she explained as much as she could and gave me what I needed for the most part.

I toured Karolwood Gardens Norfolk. It was not as pristine as the other place. It was clean and well-kept, but it was not the same level of wow. There was not a wow factor or anything. In terms of amenities, they were lacking, for sure. The person who was doing the tour was very nice. She was great. She gave me good information about different care programs. They didn't have a lot of activities, so it is going to be challenging for my parents because they don't want to be there in the first place.

I'm leaning towards Karolwood Gardens Norfolk for my mom. We only met a few staff during my tour, but they were helpful and knowledgeable. They did try to make a connection with my mom, and they tried to find out for me things they didn't know the answers to. We got to see two different rooms. One was large, which had a large living room area, a reasonably large bedroom area, a bathroom, and a little kitchenette with just a microwave, a refrigerator, and cabinets. It had a nice-sized closet, too. The other one was much smaller, about half the size of the first one. But it had a nice-sized bathroom and it had a smaller fridge, but it still had some cabinets and a microwave. There was a window with views outside. They took us out to the courtyard that had benches, chairs, flowers, and trees. We saw one of the residents with an aide actually outside watering the plants, which I thought was nice. They also had a screened-in front porch, which was like a lounge, and it was nice, too. The building had 3 floors and there were 2 wings on each floor. There were 10 rooms in each of the wings. The dining areas were small and more intimate. They said that they would try to pair mom with somebody that they thought she would be able to make friends with right from the start, so that was helpful. They talked about some of the different activities that they do in-house and these were things that I think my mom would enjoy. They were in the process of doing some updates because it was recently taken over by a new organization. So, I saw a lot of repairs being done like a new coat of paint in different places.

My sister-in-law is a resident of Karolwood Gardens Norfolk. The facility is clean. Their staff is very snippy. Half the time, there's nobody at the front desk. If you have a problem, most of the time they don't call you back. When my daughter was finding a place for my sister-in-law, they said that they had transportation to facilities, or to doctors' appointments; they don't have it. There's a couple of people there that were nice. But the manager, my daughter wrote a letter to corporate, because of the way that they acted towards her. They're just nowhere near as professional as the other facility before. The place is clean and it's in good, decent condition. My sister-in-law doesn't like their food. In terms of activities, for months and months they were on lockdown. They had to stay in their room, and this was just until this past month.

It is a nice place, clean, new, and has nice people. Everything there was great. When I called them wanting a tour, they said to come on over and they spent about 45 minutes showing me the place and discussing their programs and facilities. They also introduced us to some of the people there and it was very good. Their amenities are all fine; there wasn't anything they don't have.
