The Reserve at First Colony's assisted living was very nice. It was clean and comfortable. The apartments were quiet and nice. A little bit isolated, but they were okay. The staff who toured me was very nice and very accommodating. The dining area was nice, clean, and spacious. It was a pretty friendly environment too. They have a library and a place for exercise. They also have a really nice area for the residents to just socialize.

My husband and I toured The Reserve at First Colony. The memory care is very below standard. The rooms look like small jail cells, but they said they were doing renovations. They don't take the memory care people out to eat with them, they're like put in the back in what they call a village which is a lock-in. I understand the lock-in is necessary but there is no carpet, doors are open, and the privacy. I saw things I shouldn't have seen like nakedness. I think there was only one lady to maybe about 7 or 8 individuals. They were all wheeled to this picnic table in the back, while the people who only had assisted living had family room chef-dining. They say they get the same food from the chef and they bring it to the back. We were like, I would not put my worst enemy back here. It was just different from their assisted living. Assisted living was all nice and very apartment-like, very comfortable. But they're not offering that same thing to memory care. I know memory care can be harder but it was totally different. We called it the dungeon, and we were like, no, no, thank you. Therefore, with the amount of money they wanted, it was ridiculous. The staff was nice but the lady who was supposed to give me the tour wasn't there that day, so she's the stand-in person. She only takes the money. She couldn't go into detail why those rooms looked like they were. "You can go in again, you can ask the real lady when you see her on a house tour. I'm sure she's going to call you on Monday." That's all I kept getting back from her. She was nice but they shouldn't let her do a tour of a facility if they're trying to get people. She didn't know what room not to show me. She showed us the very first room, which was the worst room. The other staff who was about to feed them wasn't friendly, welcoming, or warm. The Reserve should not push their memory care. They should only push their assisted living.
