I am/was a resident of this facility

I've been a resident of Brookdale First Colony for about a year now. The people are nice. It's very convenient. It's next to the hospital, and there's a shopping mall and movie theaters, too. And because I lived close by before, I know this area pretty well. A cleaning lady comes to my house once a week. The general condition of the place is okay. They have a courtyard and a hallway to walk in, and even if there's rain, it's pretty good. I enjoy it. This is an old place. But every time people move out, they make things new in the apartment. I have a one-bedroom with a study. We have bingo here. They have a community room, a guest party room, and a dining room. We get one meal a day. Most of the staff members are very good, but their food is lousy. They give us a $100 per month allowance, but the food is mostly frozen food. And it's very salty, especially the soup. To me, it's a little excessive. Maybe other people think it's okay because compared with the other luxury places, they're a brand new place, which is much better. It's okay. I'm very pleased with their service. Whenever we have a problem, we push the button, and the office people will come up very quickly.

There was nothing not to like at Brookdale First Colony. We would probably put my friend over there. The problem was that the room was on the small side. There was only a living room, a very small kitchen, and a small bedroom. The living room was nice, it had a nice view, and it was super clean. It was all redone inside and it was beautiful. But it was smaller. They said if I got my friend situated she would be able to get on a waiting list to get into a larger room later, but she would have had six people ahead of her, and so I didn't think that would work out too well. The staff member who toured us was first-rate. I like Brookdale First Colony very much. I didn't get a chance to have lunch there. However, I found out something about the eating arrangements there, they only guaranteed two meals a day. You have a meal card that you use, and you get a $300 credit and you have to use that. If you want to have a third meal, you have to submit that card, and then after you've used up the credits, then you would have to pay for any extra meal. I think that would be very confusing to my friend. She wouldn't want to use up the credit, so she might end up skipping a meal. I didn't eat the food and I never got to see what the portions were, but I didn't think that was a good deal. I did not like that at all. I did not think that the way they have the meal credit set up was a very good idea.

We went to look at Brookdale First Colony. The staff member escorted us around. She did a very thorough job of showing us the facility, explaining the costs, and explaining the different facilities, so I appreciate what she did. I would recommend her as a guide. The rooms were adequate in size. I looked at one-bedroom ones, and they were very well laid out. They were acceptable to me. They offer meals.

The reason why we liked Brookdale First Colony the best was I felt like it had more activities going on that my sister would be interested in. I liked the apartment sizes. I liked the fact that they completely redo every apartment before a new tenant lives in, like all new appliances and all new carpet. She wasn't having to move in to something that somebody else had just lived in. I liked the fact that they had security gates and a lot of dining options.

The most important thing about Brookdale First Colony was that the room we saw made me feel claustrophobic. I have a king-sized bed, and the room was small. The living room area was also small. It was like a hotel room. You had to transfer your cable, internet, and phone there. The staff who assisted us was still a neophyte out there and wasn't as knowledgeable. Everything looked good, but I think they were overpriced for what they offered. They had activities going on at the time we were there on a Friday afternoon. We saw a chapel and a movie theater. They had an outdoor heated pool. The facility was nice.

I toured Brookdale First Colony. The people that I met were really nice. The grounds are really nice. It seemed very secure and very safe. I liked it. The staff was very helpful. They had a little welcome sign waiting for me when I walked in, and a small gift. She knew that I liked golf, so she gave me some golf balls. She was just very informative and answered all my questions. They do have a beauty salon. They have health care people on staff. It's not assisted living, but there are people that are available if you need help. They have a nice pool. They have a putting green, a movie room, a couple of game rooms, and lots of activities. I just wish it was less expensive.

I'm very happy here at Brookdale First Colony. The staff members are very efficient and very polite. The landscaping is really pretty and they had just totally recarpeted and repainted my apartment when I moved in, so it's quite lovely. It's a pretty good size for a one-bedroom and there's a nice balcony. It's a good view because I'm on the second floor. If I was on the first floor, it would be the parking lot, but I'm on the second floor, so I can see trees. There are few food choices. I don't go to the dining room very often. I usually eat on my own, but it's just a regular dining area with circular tables that can seat about five or six people and there are small square tables that will seat like two. The grounds are very pretty. The landscaping is very nice. I haven't done a whole lot, but there are quite a few activities. There is a communion service on Friday in one of the rooms. There are all kinds of trips. You can go to ATV or Kroger, the zoo, and other fun trips. Value for money is not great, but just OK.

I am a Veteran who served in the Vietnam War. I am so happy I chose this facility because they have a lot of other Veterans here and the staff feels like family. I even ran into an old buddy from way back when I was in the war! We wear red shirts on Fridays to honor the Vets.

The rooms at Brookdale First Colony were bigger, but it wasn't as new and updated as the other one we visited. They had a beauty salon and a TV room. The staff was also nice but they really couldn't show us all the rooms, at the time. I was supposed to meet somebody there, but I was running late and they didn't wait so I wasn't able to meet the person who could show me everything. They had a very nice garden and a nice sitting place outside. The place is independent living.

We visited Brookdale First Colony and we loved it but it just didn't work for us. It's also too far from where I live. What we liked best about it was that I love the location. It was in a very affluent area, and it made me feel like it would be safe for my aunt if she was to walk around. I didn't feel like it was an unsafe area. I felt like the facilities were taken care of and maintained very well. There were many amenities and it was gorgeous. The dining room was probably my favorite because it looked like a fine restaurant. It was for independent living but they still check up on the residents there so I like it. We were just not given accurate information each time, and it changed, so it's one of the reasons why my aunt is not there. It's because the apartment we were supposed to pay for wasn't ready so that upset her, and that's really why she decided not to go. She felt like if they weren't honest about a couple of things at the time, maybe something might happen while she was living there. Other than that, everything we needed for her was there and the facility is beautiful.

Brookdale First Colony is independnet living, though you can get assistance with their a la carte thing. It was a good tour experience. I had never really known assisted versus independent living, so it gave me a different look than it did to the other place. Because it's independent, it was more spread out, but it was just a little different. Their apartments were nice, they were large, and I liked that the closet area was nice and large. The maintenance and upkeep were fine. The dining area was close to restaurant style and its feel was nice, and I saw people in the dining area. The person who gave the tour was very informative.

I toured Brookdale First Colony. It is a community for more senior people than me. They seemed to have a lot of activities. It was very clean, but I'm not ready for that level of care yet. They provide housekeeping, they have an alarm that you wear around your neck so in case something happens to you, you can get assistance right away. I saw a one-bedroom plus study. It was a little smaller than I had anticipated, and the one that I looked at had older appliances, but they said they were going to update the appliances. It wasn't central air; they have a hotel-type air conditioning unit in the main room and the bedroom. It wasn't what I was looking for. The staff was very good, and they were very nice. The lady who toured me showed me the apartment, the dining room, and they have another section that you can get sandwiches and salads and things like that. They give you a $300 a month credit for your meals. If you want to use their facilities for eating and drinking, you can, and if you don't want to, you don't have to. The grounds are very nice, they have a nice pool and a nice activity room. They have gardens, and they were working on it because after we had the freeze here, they are replanting things. There's a courtyard for people to sit and converse. It's a nice place.

I went to Brookdale First Colony personally, and they were very good about showing everything around and giving me all the options. The apartments were good. They had storage and stuff like that that you need. They showed me all the common areas, so I knew what to expect. They also showed me where the laundry rooms were and the parking. The only one I interfaced with was the person who took me around, and we met some staff members, but only in very much passing. They showed me the gym, the dining room, the bistro, and the areas where they met for gatherings and for church. The place was clean. They had three courtyards, and the apartments looked out on the courtyards, and you can get to the courtyards easily.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother has moved into Brookdale First Colony. It's only been a couple of weeks, but they have been amazing. We chose it because of the view, the room, brand new carpet, and brand new paint. It rained and there was a leak at the window, and the guy was there in 5 minutes. They have been so helpful with her. She has already made friends. They had an ambassador assigned to her to show her around. So far, so good. The price is very good. The employees are very good. She said the food is great. I've seen the food because they're delivering right now. It smells good, it looks great, and she's eating it and she's pretty picky. The price is fair enough. The minute I met with them, I liked them. I have several friends who have parents that stayed there. It's such a great deal, and it's very close to my home.

We chose Brookdale First Colony because the staff was very friendly. They didn't talk down to us and the place did not have a cold feeling, and the price was right. They have a swimming pool, a beautician, they have two libraries which is great, they have laundry facilities, they have a small storage area, and covered parking.

Brookdale First Colony was a nice facility, and they had some nice amenities there. I liked the apartments because they were a little bit bigger, but they're a little more independent. You have to be able to walk down the hall, and they would definitely be on the top of the list if my dad were in little better shape. They also have a pool. The staff was wonderful, very thorough, and very knowledgeable.

My experience with Brookdale First Colony so far is fine. I've been happy. I chose this place among others was because they did everything I wanted them to do. I wanted a place that's bright with windows and wood floors. They called me when people moved out, and I asked them if they would paint the colors I would like and they said they would. It made the difference because other places just go with the color they wanted and that was it, they didn't want you to change it and if you do change it, you'd have to change it back. Everything in the community is done very well, except housekeeping. They said light housekeeping, but it got too light. The staff and those who helped do what I asked are excellent, like they hung pictures for me and connected cable lines and whatnot for me. The price for what you get is very reasonable.

Brookdale First Colony was beautiful and clean. It would've been my choice, but it's too expensive. The people were active and interacted well. They had a lot of walking space, ponds, little golf areas, swimming pools, exercise pools, a lot of greenery, a lot of nature, and breezeways. It was as though you're outside instead of being in an apartment complex. They had one dining area, a bistro area, and a separate area for special occasions. The menu was pretty good. The regular dining room was for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The bistro was like a restaurant for whatever you want to order. All of the residents seemed to know all of the staff by first name. When being toured by a staff member and they know 30 or 40 the people that you run into, you know that that person is doing their job.

We toured Brookdale First Colony. We preferred their cafeteria better, and they had this wonderful little deli where you could get stuff. However, the one thing that we did not want for her was that when you opened your room door, you were in the elements. It had a cover over it, so, if it raining you would not get wet, but once you opened your door, and these were older people, they got cold, they had to put a coat on go to outside to get the mail and to go to lunch, dinner and all that. We wanted her totally indoors. It had more amenities than the other Brookdale we visited. It had a pool and a little golf course. To be honest with you, I could have moved in. I really liked it, but my mother-in-law was not an outdoor person at all, and for her to have to go outside or go out of her room, be it cold or hot, even though it was covered, was just more than I thought she could have handled. That was the only thing, but the staff seemed wonderful.

I moved in to Brookdale First Colony. It's pretty good, but I'm too young. There are too many older people, but it's a good program. It's clean and has a pool, beautiful grounds, and they cook for you. I don't have any complaints, but it's just that a person like me doesn't really fit in. People there are in their late 80s, 90s, and 100s. The food is OK. I'm used to high-quality, gourmet food because I'm a good cook. I have an apartment, and it's very nice. They can improve the activities there because they don't have enough that are intellectually stimulating, and they show really old movies. They could show more contemporary movies.

I’m impressed with Brookdale First Colony. There is a sense of community going on there that I like. They have a full array of activities, including presentations and movies. It seems like a fairly active schedule. The rooms/apartments are fine. Brookdale First Colony is the place I want to go. It is located next to the mall. The staff is fine.

Terrace- First Colony is a great place for retired people because they have activities. They're independent, but yes, they are with a group of people their own age. They form friendships; they have a community -- it's great. Upkeeping is pretty good. They also have a service where you can contact for people to come in to their homes occasionally to help them with their medications, which was what we did with my mother-in-law. I think the staff is very loving and very caring. She's happy to be there. She's been there for like 10 years, and so it's her home.

At first, my brother-in-law was apprehensive about what he wants to do at Terrace at First Colony, but they really get you involved there and make you feel welcome. He is the secretary of the little association they developed there. He had adjusted very well. It's mainly an apartment style living as opposed to an enclosed setting with the rooms literally in an enclosed building. The facility offers both assisted and private living, so he's able to do his daily duties on his own. He has a vehicle, so he is able to drive if he needs to. They have also the bus service that is offered for the whole community. They provide two meals a day. You do have the option of three meals a day, that's an extra expense if you want. You have a nice kitchen in your apartment to be able to cook if you choose or prepare on your own as well. He truly loves it there.

My mother moved in last December in Terrace at First Colony. She's beginning to adjust and goes to everybody. I think it’s a good facility. You're getting want you pay for. The apartments are very nice. They wear name tags so they know each other, that's very nice too. After losing my dad she needs company, they were willing to take her dog. That's God sent. They have lots of activities planned every minute of the day. They have movies, bingo, outings to restaurants and different things. You just choose what you want to do. The only thing we had to get used to is that it wasn't an indoor facility where all the apartments were indoors. It's like a Spanish villa, almost everything's kind of open. They have four courtyards that when you walk out of your apartment, you have an open walkway covered by the building. That is a drawback at first that we really had to consider it but it's not a big deal.

We knew a number of people at the Terrace at First Colony. We looked for a community and some places had a cold atmosphere. Everybody there was friendly and we liked it. They were prompt at getting out requests done. It was also closer to our church. It was a two bedroom place. However, our cats wouldn't be able to go out because the doors did not face outside.
