The tour I had with Brookdale Memorial Oaks was very thorough. The administrator was very knowledgeable about what they had to offer. It was very clean. The patients seemed very happy. They showed us both assisted living and memory care. They had a small refrigerator in the apartment. The staff was informative and answered all our questions honestly. The outside was very nice. I remember a courtyard coming in. They have activities. We met the activity director. They have arts and crafts. The dining area was a cafeteria type.

The staff of Brookdale Memorial Oaks was great. Communication was very good. I actually spoke with the activities director, and I liked the activities that they offered. I love the facility. It was very pretty, and it had a great patio. I was just kind of a little disappointed with Brookdale in general, not so much with Memorial Oaks, because they wouldn't accept him there. Surely with all of their facilities, they should have been able to find one that I was happy with. There may have been other facilities available, but they weren't in the areas that I was comfortable with.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My husband was in Brookdale Memorial Oaks. They were so friendly, everybody was so helpful, and they even remembered my name. Small things like that mean so much. I did see one of the meals they provided for my husband and I was impressed with that. It was a hamburger, but it was well dressed with lettuce and tomato, he also had a Jell-o salad, and they brought it to his room. I was really impressed. I thought, God willing if I go someplace, they would be a choice of mine.

Brookdale Memorial Oaks is very nice and clean. The people were very warm and friendly. The dining area looked very clean. I observed some people playing cards, dominoes and games.

Brookdale Memorial Oaks is a very nice facility. Nothing by comparison to the décor and design because it was an older facility, but I noticed that the residents were so happy. They had great programs, they were very active and moving around the facility, unencumbered and with great ease, and they were happy with their meals, were interactive with relationships with each other, and it was like a great big nursery school for elderly people. The staff was magnificent, and they were long time employees; it's rare and unusual in the care industry that people stay at the same place for long periods of time. They had been there as long as 10 years which I thought was impressive. We sent my mother there.

Brookdale was horrible, and it was institutional. The marketing director was clear and affable. The rooms were horrible, and it looked like a hospital. The location was OK, as well as the dining room.

Provider Response

I visited this facility

Brookdale Memorial Oaks was a very nice, clean facility with lots of options. They have a respite care for two weeks, but we were interested in something more like day care. The physical structure was very nice. It looked like an apartment complex and had nice and clean rooms. The community was nice but didn’t meet the criteria that we were immediately looking for.

We visited Brookdale Memorial Oaks and their rooms were extremely small, but they do have higher level of care. I did like that if she went there and needed more care that she could probably stay there and not have to go to another facility. It was a smaller facility and I like that. I felt that there would be more a feeling of a community there.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I'm very happy with Brookdale Memorial Oaks. My father is in their memory care. He has been there for a little over a month. I have been very happy with the care he is getting there and with the facility itself. Last week, they were having a 70s party in the main dining area and the memory care were invited to go over there as well. So I took my dad there, and we both had a wonderful time. My dad is wheelchair-bound, and he is also in hospice, so he can't do a whole lot of things, but sometimes they'll take him in his wheelchair and wheel him all around.

I visited this facility

Brookdale Memorial Oaks was very nice, but it was much too large of a community for my mother. The staff were all very friendly. When I went in, there were a lot of residents that were in wheelchairs sitting out there in the front, and with the way it was set up, that made it feel more like a nursing home, but it didn't smell.

Provider Response

I thought that Emeritus at Memorial, for the most part, met all our needs. The only reason why we decided to go with a different facility was because we were actually looking for a place that had kind of a screened-in area for her to smoke. We talked a little bit to some of the residents and they seemed to enjoy the place. I didn't have any negative comments to make of it. The place looked like it was kept up fine, and it obviously looked like there was plenty of staff to attend to the needs of the residents. The rooms were slightly dated because it was an older facility, but it surely wasn't everything that would negatively affect our decision. We probably could have been able to paint the room or something. Overall, I think it was a fine facility, but it all came down to the key factor for us. It was in a good location and we didn't walk away from there with any negative vibe or anything that is for sure.

Emeritus at Memorial has been a very nice place for my mom. She didn't go willingly but I think she wouldn't have in any place. They've done everything they can to make the transition easier for her. I visit my mother often and I'm constantly in touch with them and her. So far it seems to work out very well for her.

Emeritus at Memorial was even better than the place where my mom stayed. However, the configuration of the room was that they would have to put a refrigerator, microwave and bedroom. Other than that, it was very comfortable.

I visited Emeritus for my dad. It was a clean facility. They had nice people working there. They were very accommodating too. The residents had lots of activities to participate in. However, the place is not within our budget.

They have the absolute best staff. I was very impressed by the facility due to its cleanliness, food, and most importantly, the happy demeanor of the workers there. This happiness rubbed off onto the residents .Their professionalism and courtesy is what makes this facility such a happy place, they're very caring and loving while no place will ever be perfect they are close to it. Never once have I seen anyone subjected to any ill treatment and each worker has had endless patience with the families questions, requests and concerns. They put their heart into helping the patients during dinners, activities and personal care needs. They have never called unwarranted, and have acted in very professional manners when the patients have had any issues. Should Alzheimer's be an issue, they also have a fantastic memory care section that provides extra support and memory pertinent stimulation. Emeritus is a definite must-see for those interested.

The facility was in very clean, well kept condition. The relative I had staying there seemed to be happy with her location. She liked her view of the garden. The general attitude and feeling in the facility was rather chipper and upbeat, considering. Some of the places I've had to visit have been a little down and dumpy. This place, the Emeritus, was not like those. Generally this place was in good shape. The recreation areas were well kept as well, and I got to take a look at the event calendar that had been planned for the residents. It seemed like there was plenty to do for the residents. The grounds were in great shape and looked wonderful. My relative's neighbors were also very kind, and they had developed a good friendship, much to my liking. The attendants, or whatever they would be called, I met were kind and attentive. Overall, this place was a very good facility.

The Emeritus at Memorial assisted living facility in Houston is a beautiful community with a lovely, hotel style atmosphere at the foyer. We visited there as a possible home for our aunt. The landscaping was nicely appointed, featuring many places to enjoy around the building grounds. The back of the property featured a lovely park-like space with large trees and well-kept, nicely manicured landscaping. The interior design of the main rooms were a bit dated, but was clean and had plenty of space. The gorgeous views made up for the décor and the ceiling fans and open windows provided plenty of fresh air and light. Residents enjoy the many nooks and crannies where ample seating areas adorn the many windows. The main dining room was spacious with a comfortable decor. The residents enjoy home-style cooking in a restaurant like setting. The food smelled and looked delicious and healthy. The menus included some exotic dishes for variety, which also looked delicious. Snacks are offered throughout the day and whenever the residents request them. The private spaces were nicely decorated and looked very homey, with plenty of light and fresh air. Each unit has beautiful views of the woodsy surrounding area. Bathrooms include safety rails and seats. We were impressed by the calendar of activities, which included plenty of fun and stimulating things like a variety of physical exercise such as a ball toss, nature walks and visits into town, where they can enjoy everything that Houston has to offer. The fitness center offers daily exercise classes, and the equipment is available any time, as are the DVD classes. Residents enjoy safely navigating the many pathways and courtyard for exercise, as well. The residents all looked very content and well taken care of by very kind staff, in a stimulating, yet peaceful living environment.
