Brownwood Skilled Nursing is a relatively new nursing facility in Brownwood, Texas. Both of my grandmothers have been residents. One of my grandmothers is a permanent resident. The other one was there temporarily when she broke her leg and needed additional assistance for a time period. My grandmother that is a resident has been a resident to three other nursing homes. This one is, by far, the best of all the places that she has been in. The staff is very friendly and willing to help. The rooms are bigger than any other rooms that I have seen in other nursing homes. Plus, the decor when coming in the front door is outstanding, and it carries on into the rooms. One of the best features is the keypad entry/exit. No one can enter or exit without punching a code. The process is not hard, but it does help residents that may have alzheimer's from leaving without being noticed. The only negative remark would be the food. My grandmother is not a big fan. The few times I have visited during meal times, the food did not look too bad, but I think there is nothing better than homemade, so I can see her point!

Brownwood Nursing and Rehabilitation is a facility that is great in some aspects, but mediocre or even poor in quality in other areas. The staff are wonderful people on average. They are caring and attentive, though occassionally a staff person can be found there who could be doing more for the residents. They are quick to respond to client needs, genuinely concerned for their clients well-being and make a real effort to treat them with dignity. The activities are well-thought out to meet the needs of the elderly and those recovering from illnesses and injuries. The physical therapy program is excellent. Clients are encouraged to participate in both, but respected should they choose to decline an activity. One of the areas where they could improve the quality of the home is cleanliness. The rooms are frequently poorly cleaned, trash is often present in corners and under beds, excess dishes sit on bedstands and counters sometimes for a day or two before someone, usually a visitor, notices and takes the dishes out. Laundry services often lose residents personal items of clothing and bedding. The nurses make conscientous efforts to provide necessary medical appointments for the residents and take care of the medicine schedules very well. The food is very poor in quality alot of times. There is often not much variety, the food is often overcooked or even burned, and the portions are ridiculously small. They occassionally have a fairly decent meal, especially during holidays, parties, or community awareness days. One of the best features of the home is in administration. The administrators have an open door policy, and have always taken time to hear our concerns, take action to correct issues that come up and even take a personal interest in the families of the residents, to the point of asking questions about the children and pets of the families. In summary, although Brownwood Nursing and Rehabilitation has a few areas to improve upon, it is a fairly good facility and residents have remarked that it is not really too bad of a place to live.
