I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Rooms vary in size at different price points with upgrades offered prior to moving in. Food is good some days, decent others with some bad days. The full time staff there is wonderful and truly do know their residents but, like all facilities, Alexian has been hit with the post-covid staffing shortages. What really warmed my heart was learning that so many staff members stayed day and night during a recent snowstorm to make sure my loved one was taken care of. God bless the workers at Alexian for taking time away from their families to make sure my family member had the care she needed.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

This (expensive) life-care facility is terrible. My parent has been there for almost ten years, the last several of which have been in assisted living and occasionally skilled nursing. This facility is unable to accommodate even a common dietary restriction (gluten-free) with any consistency. My parent frequently gets sick from eating items that staff has said are fine and safe to eat. Their staff is so poorly paid that the turnover rate is astounding. They are constantly short of staff, and they deflect blame by saying it's hard to get people, when in reality they just don't want to pay enough to retain good employees. Their staffing inadequacies are so bad that they sometimes bring in temps to do things like give showers, which should only ever be given by staff that the residents know, trust and feel comfortable with, not total strangers! Food service is another place Alexian cuts corners. At the price point that is charged, and the amount of money required to buy in lifetime care, I would expect at least one or two homemade salad dressings a day. But nope, all salad dressings come in a packet of pre-prepared, low quality offerings. And salad dressings are SO EASY to make! The main dining room serves a LOT of buffets to cut down on staffing requirements. These people are old, and navigating a buffet is difficult with a cane or walker. Many residents are too proud to keep asking for assistance so they either struggle, or just skip a meal. On the many times I have dined there, it has always been a most underwhelming experience with the quality of food served. It is very clear that they are in this to make money, not provide quality services. The elevators are dirty, many places are overdue for a new coat of paint, some areas are overdue for new carpeting, and much of this facility just looks "tired" and in need of attention. Look outside some of the entrances, and there are piles of cigarette butts on the ground where employees go to smoke. When my parent was in skilled nursing, the nursing staff were HORRIBLE. Sometimes I would finally have to go up to the desk to find out why no one was responding to a request for help using the restroom, and there would be the nurse, playing on her phone, irritated that I had interrupted her. The overall management is consistently non-existent. When calling the business office, no one answers and calls go direct to voicemail. Same when calling the administrative office, straight to voicemail. In the last several years, this place has gone so far downhill, I wouldn't place my worst enemy here. Compared with similar places, Alexian is indeed inferior. If I could get my parent out of here, I would!

I visited this facility

I've chosen Alexian Village on Signal Mountain. I plan to move there in three to four years. I saw it as a very caring place. It is very faith-based, but not overly so. Everyone there seemed very happy. I visited a few times, and everyone's welfare is everyone's concern there. The food is very good. The apartments are comfortable. I am going for a smaller unit. I want to be in the main building, and that looks very do-able. They've got beautiful grounds, and it's situated in a beautiful community with beautiful views. Some of the apartments are older, some are newer, but it all blends together very well. They had exercise areas and activities, and normally they'd have trips, but it's shutdown with COVID. They have a lot of activities to stimulate all different interests, and they have a pool. The food is excellent and the socialization in the dining halls is great. I chose it because it's not far from where I live now and because it is a Catholic-based residence.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother has been here for seven-plus years now, and if I had it to do over again, we would NOT let Mom move into Alexian. It used to be very good when the Alexian Brothers were running it, but since Ascension Living took it over, it is TERRIBLE. The food service is lacking, both in quality and service. Main dining room servers are always visiting with each other instead of giving the Residents and their guests attentive service. And down in the Town Square it is even worse! It takes 30-45 minutes to get your order, and that's when it's not busy. Servers down there always seem to be chatting in the kitchen instead of serving. And I mean ALWAYS. When Mom first went in, there was only a buffet once a week for the main meal on Sunday. Now they do buffet service at the drop of a hat. And when seniors might have some mobility limitations, buffet service is not very convenient. Management says a server will help a resident navigate the long buffet table, but older people are proud, and often do not want to inconvenience anyone, so they struggle. Deep cleaning the kitchen? Have a buffet! Having a bake sale downstairs? Have a buffet! Expecting company to come tour the facility? Have a buffet! One reason Mom went in here was because they always had table service. Now that is no longer true, and the Residents suffer from that. Having been to several buffet lunches, I can tell you that the quality is also lacking. Empty platters slow to be refilled, food that is not at all hot, serving utensils that should be changed out and washed regularly are not, spills on the table not cleaned up, and I could go on. So food service, which is often the high point of an elderly person's day, is absolutely, totally lacking in both dining venues. Alexian's obsession with buffet service food is reason enough to find another venue for your loved one. For the prices charged to live at Alexian, this should be a more high-end facility with high-quality service. Constant buffets in lieu of more personal table service meals scream corner-cutting and low-end quality service. Having lived in Independent Living for many years, my mother has had occasion to need to have a stay in the Healthcare Department (skilled nursing) and also Assisted Living. Over the course of a 3-week stay in Healthcare, I found the nursing staff to be at times surly, unhelpful, unresponsive, and overall just offering sloppy care, for the most part. There were some nurses who were good, great even, but that was not the norm. And I visited almost every day, so my observations were plentiful. As for a short stay in Assisted Living, this is the ONLY place that Alexian shines. Nursing care much better than average. But again, as far as food service goes, I found the meals offered to Residents in Assisted always barely lukewarm. In the many meals I had there with my mom, I cannot remember one that was served hot. In closing, Alexian offers all the same services everyone else does like medical transportation, shopping transportation, recreational trips, etc., but for services rendered on an every-day basis, this Retirement Village is sorely lacking. Also, good luck ever getting someone on the phone. It doesn't matter if I was calling admissions, management, healthcare, rehab, dining service, etc., NO ONE ever answers the phone! It seems like all administrative staff leave at 3 pm every day, because no call made after 4 pm will result in speaking to someone because they have all gone home already. This truly is one very poorly run facility. Employees parking in the few spots close to the entrance to Assisted Living instead of leaving those spots for visitors, bus drivers who are on their cell phones with personal calls while driving up and down a winding mountain road. You have the safety of my mother in your hands! Get off the darn phone! It's like there is NO employee oversight anywhere at this large facility. I hate to give a one-star review, but after many years of personal observations, they do indeed deserve it.

I visited this facility

A beautiful campus and facility at the top of the mountain--the views are incredible. The nurses and aides truly care for the residents and appear to be a great team. Leaving there, I have a peace of mind knowing my aunt is in good hands.

I visited this facility

Alexian Village of Tennessee was a very nice, beautiful facility but not somewhere Mom is going to be able to afford. They had a large buy-in, and she is not able to do that. The staff was very nice. The rooms were adequate.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I have been to Alexian Village of Tennessee myself when I had surgery and also have friends there. Everything is absolutely top notch. The staff is wonderful. I don't have any complaints. The friends I visit are very happy there. The apartments are spacious, lovely, and set up nicely. I'm very pleased with the food. The grounds are a beautiful setting.

This facility has the reputation of being the best in the Chattanooga area. I truly believe it to be one of the best although all nursing homes have problem areas. The staff are wonderful. Mom's CNA's take good care of her and are always friendly and respectful of mom's needs. They bathe, dress, help with eating and using the bathroom and get mom ready for the day. The nurses are generally helpful. This depends on the one on duty. One of her nurses goes out of her way to help mom and will let me know if she thinks mom needs medical attention from a doctor or if mom seems to be in pain. The other is good, but I often have to "keep after her" to get mom's needs met. The DON there is wonderful and always listens to concerns and quickly acts on solving any problems. There is a monthly care meeting available for family members to address any issues they have. The meeting includes a nurse, social worker, dietician, rehabilitation person and the meeting coordinator.. These meetings are especially helpful to the family. The facility is nice and kept clean. There are hand sanitizer dispensers in each room. The rooms are a bit small for two people and there is not enough closet space. They have a lovely front porch for the residents to enjoy. They have numerous activities scheduled for the week including: trivia games, bingo, bible study, nail care, monthly birthday parties, musical entertainment and church services. They do have occasional outings for residents that are able to get out. They have a shelf full of good books available and a tv area where they show movies on saturday. The dining area is a bit crowded, but the food is good and the cafeteria workers are helpful to those that have trouble eating. There is also a rehabilitation center on site. The main issues I have had here have been a lack of communication between the CNA's and nurses. There was one time that mom went a number of days without a bowel movement due to the fact that the CNA's were not recording this in the tracker. So, it never printed out on the list where the nurses could see there was a problem. They could also use a few more CNA's on her floor. All in all, it is a good place, but, as with all nursing homes, you need to visit your family member often to ensure things are not being overlooked.

I know for a fact that my mother has had issues with the company that provides pharmaceuticals for Alexian, other than that I do not believe that there have been any major issues. From personal experience, the staff is friendly. I have volunteered at several Nursing Homes/Assisted Living Facilities in the area, and I would say that out of those few visited, Alexian has the most friendly staff. As for the facilities, they are fairly clean. I don't really have anything positive or negative to say about the cleanliness.
