I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My wife's cousin moved to American House Kingsport. It's a little small room, but it accommodates an individual. They have bingo. They have gospel singing. They have bluegrass music. They have a church. There's just something going on all the time.

Provider Response

I toured the American House Kingsport. It was good. The staff was very good. The apartment seemed like it was OK. My biggest problem is that I have a cat. I know most places take pets. However, mine is an indoor/outdoor cat, so that creates a problem. If I don't have a first floor, she goes in and out of the window. If they had a window that would work, that one was a good possibility. The dining area was very nice. The place was clean and neat.

I am/was a resident of this facility

In two years, between Elmcroft and American House, I have seen ~ five executive directors come and abruptly leave without notice while the staff has remained basically the same. No facility or service can function wholly with that many changes in leadership in that length of time. At present, I am seeing an upward trend in the quality of service under this latest executive director who is open to and executes change based on constructive input from residents and their families. I believe that staff members care for residents and, for the most part, have been respectful to my mother and me and have been prompt in responding to my requests. Improvement takes time, training, goal setting, setting specific expectations, cooperation, good communication and solid, consistent leadership. I believe it's working.

Provider Response

Jimmy, thanks so much for your feedback! We appreciate you being open and honest with us.

Everybody at American House Kingsport was very friendly, helpful, and answered all of our questions. They did a very thorough tour and took their time with us. We don't have any complaints whatsoever. Everything was very good. The rooms were adequate for what my mother-in-law would need, as far as the space. The dining area was more like a restaurant. The grounds were very nice. From what I understand, the residents have full access to them, so it makes it feel like it's more of a home. They have a beauty shop and transportation to their doctor's appointments. They could have overnight guests, too.

Provider Response

Angie, thank you for taking the time to visit our community! We enjoyed meeting you and hope to welcome you and your loved one home to American House!

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

American House Kingsport is fine for people who are in an advanced stage of severe dementia. It's reasonably good care. It's OK, but not great. It used to be a really good place. You could go to the staff any time and somebody was there and you could talk to them. When the new owners took them over, they kept their door shut and they said they were on corporate business and nobody would even talk to you. I had to go around to the kitchen to get in one time, because there was nobody even near to open the door. The food used to be good. It was amazing and then they got rid of the cooks and got new cooks there, but I saw them fixing special plates for different people, so they were trying to meet the people's needs. It was clean for the most part and very cheerful when you walked in. It had a nice ambiance. What I liked most about it was the smallness of the memory care facility. People could really observe my loved one and know that he was safe all the time. I felt like it was a better placement than the next one he went to. They also had very nice outdoor spaces where you could walk with your loved one outside and sit. Then they had a place to garden. It's pricey, but it's very lovely. They have Gospel singing once a week, but I didn't see any other activities. I think maybe that's because they were more attentive to the residents than having the ability to have that.

My mom will be moving into American House Kingsport. We chose it because of the price. More than that, they had good staffing ratios, and the room is nice. She has a large bathroom. She is in a joined room with somebody else, but she's kind of got her own room. It's close by, it's in the town where I live, and it just ticked all the boxes. The staff was nice, she was very helpful and personable. They have rehab there and they have activities but I haven't experienced any. I know that there's a rehab or physical therapy area, and then there's a common area where they have activities like painting and stuff like that.

The staff was really nice and friendly. It was clean, and a lot of the residents were out wandering, but they were all in one common area. The rooms were smaller than the other place; they're just 220 square feet, but they were nice. It's in a very nice location. It's on a dead end, so there's no traffic coming in or out. The layout was very nice and very easy, and it's all on one level. They gave me biscuits with apple butter, and they were good.

Everything has been great. It's your standard assisted living with a memory care part for people with dementia or Alzheimer's. Everything looks fine, and the place is clean. My mom is content. They do special events and meals. Their staff is very supportive of people going through a hard time.

It has been great for my brother and I am very satisfied. The surroundings are fine. It’s not a very large place, and they don’t have anywhere to walk. The food is fantastic, but my brother is on special diet. The people are very personable and take care of my brother.

We went and really, really like it, but my loved one was not just ready. The community was very nice, good, and clean. They had some small or bigger apartments. They looked really nice and you can bring your own furniture. We had lunch with them, and the food was very good. Their dining area was very clean, and everybody was very friendly.

It turned out to be a perfect place for us. They have wonderful staff. The place was active. They have some exercise equipment that they can use independently. There is an arts and crafts center that has guided activities of all kinds of variety. There are trips that they take regularly by van with the activity’s director. It might be a hike or a walk or they go out for lunch.

Our visit was OK. The staff that helped me tour the community was good and answered my inquiries about the place. Any question I had, they answered it. They showed me the rooms and the dining room. The only thing I did not like about it was that they just had a bedroom. However, it was clean. The staff showed me the activities room; nothing was going on that day, but it looked like they had different things for them to do there. They had a little nice porch to sit on and a nice room where a lot of people could go in and sit. The dining room looked really nice.

The person who showed me around was lovely. I just did not like the feel of it. It seemed dark inside, but they seemed to have a lot of personal interaction with the residents. The rooms seemed a little smaller.

I went online and I found it. The facility is good. It has been almost three months since he has been there. The staff are also good. The only thing is, I think the room can be kept cleaner. When I went there the last couple of times it smelled really bad. They have activities, but he doesn’t participate so I'm not really familiar with them.
