For all of you that are at the most difficult time in your life, when you realize you just can't give your parent the care he needs and you now most make that very sad decision...where! My sister and I traveled that path not long ago and after a lot of tears and stress, we decided to place Dad at the Hollidaysburg VS Home. This past year has been so very stressful, especially with Covid! I cannot be more happy with these wonderful people! They were one of the first to close their doors to family and friends (which at that time, disappointed me). Because of their policies, many lives were saved! During this time, I have come to love and respect each and every person I have come into contact with...from the guards who greet you at the gate with a smile and directions, to the fine young ladies in the office who go out of their way to make dreams come true (they allowed us to spend a little time with Dad to celebrate his 99th birthday), to the staff who take care of my Dad! The activities ladies are absolutely amazing! These ladies will come in, read the bible to Dad (who loves that), laugh at his jokes (even though most times he can't finish them because his train of thought just isn't always there, they even dance with him (while in the wheelchair)! The nurses are so caring and they seem to take time and patience with him. They all treat Dad with respect. Some have commented he's like their grandfather! I HAVE NOTHING BUT RESPECT AND ADMIRATION FOR HOLLIDAYSBURG VETERAN'S HOME! THEY ARE PEOPLE WITH COMPASSION AND TRUE GRIT!

I made a couple of visits to the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home. My grandmother used to stay there. The staff was really nice. There were plenty of people there so it was well staffed. The facility was really simple, but it's clean and kept up. The administration was nice and helpful. It's a really good place. They emphasize the hominess of the community. They have transportation, and they'll get them outside of the community for different activities.

The Hollidaysburg Veteran's Home is not a nice place for any veteran who needs to be in an assisted living facility. Even though it is a federally funded facility, the nurses seem under staffed or just lazy. My grandfather died in the veteran's home, it took them several hours to figure out that he died and was not sleeping. The place always smells like human waste, urine or feces and this is due to patients not being washed or when a patient has an accident it is not cleaned up as fast as it should. Families of veteran's should look for private alternatives before thinking about the Hollidaysburg Veteran's Home.
