We just moved my mom into Gateway Living. It's a unique set-up because they have several buildings and each building houses about 14 people. It is really quite nice. The rooms are small, but freshly painted, clean, and carpeted. There are individual and shared rooms. They have a common area where they have a living room, a kitchen, and a dining room. There's also an outside area where people can go out and sit. They provide activities, meals, and whatever level of care residents need. They take people places when they want to go places. The staff is very friendly and very attentive. I've looked at about four other places and this one was a little more reasonably priced.

My father was a resident of Gateway Living. When he was first there, it seemed like a clean place and good. It had absolutely no communication with family members on how he was doing or what was happening with him. It was like pulling teeth to get anything out of them on what was going on with him. It was not until later when hospice came in to help that we really started getting any kind of updates or information. When you have someone in a home facility, you rely on the staff to let you know how they're doing. They knew we had special circumstances where we weren't in the same state at the time, but they just didn't give us any information. They never called back. Another relative said they visited, and he was just sitting there like nothing. He complained about the food, so it wasn't good. It was a clean facility. The hospice came in to help with him. It was nice, but I wouldn't recommend the facility to anybody. They can improve on communication; that's really it. They can improve the interaction with the patients and the families there, the demeanor, and everything about dealing with families and the patient. It's a nice community with different homes. It's not one big home; it's different and separate homes. It's clean, but nothing spectacular.

My mom has been at Gateway Living for about three months now. So far, we are pretty satisfied and happy that she is there. The overall feeling is more like a home. They are all houses, and each house has 14 people. I really like the staff. I have eaten there, and sometimes the food is not as good as I hoped it would be, but other times it’s very good. It would be nice if they had more choices because they don’t have a lot of choice now. We tried to get her to participate to their activities, but she has not yet.

I'm looking at Gateway Living for my wife. I would choose it because it has small residential units that are limited in the number of people in each unit rather than having one large hotel-size unit. My wife would get confused if she's in a large facility. They were nice, clean, and responsible people. They were able to give us reasonable assurance that she would be in an assisted living and not memory care at least at this point which we wanted. She would have more opportunity to make friends and develop relationship with the people there. I felt the staff are knowledgeable. Some of the people that I talked to had been there for a reasonable amount of time. They told me that they try to prevent turnovers with the regards to the staff and so we thought that was important. I don’t really recall all the particulars that they offer as far as the activities, but they have a calendar of activities and I can see that there is something going on every day and sometimes twice a day.
