I went to Sapphire at McKenzie Manor. I walked in the place and it looked like I was walking in a homeless encampment. People were walking around, no shoes on, no shirt on. It looked like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I literally was waiting for the person to come, and I just told the girl that led me at the door that I was not interested and walked out. I would not recommend that place at all. The staff was all sitting around eating lunch and it took them a long time to even get a hold of the woman who was supposed to give me the tour that I had an appointment for. That place was horrible and extremely old. I was not impressed in the least. In fact, if it was free, I would not let my mother stay there.

We toured Sapphire at McKenzie Manor. The staff seemed attentive, which is good. The facility itself was old, so that was probably the negative. I also felt like there was not a lot of space and opportunity for the patients to explore, like not much of an outside area for them to utilize. The room didn't look quite ready yet. They were in the process of making repairs to the room, so it was unfinished. For amenities, they had a relatively small group room where patrons were watching television, and it seemed a little bit crowded to me.

Sapphire at McKenzie Manor was clean and orderly. The staff was welcoming and doors were secured. We were escorted in and out by a staff member and they welcomed us at the check-in and met us at the door. Ashley, the executive director, was very informative. She was very helpful in our search. We're very early in our search for care for my grandmother and Ashley was able to connect us with some resources and get us some information that was very helpful and what were the next steps. She also was very engaged in the daily activities with her residents. She knows every staff member by their name, their role, and their schedule. The activity schedule was posted and enforced. Everybody was making sure that there were always ample activities for the residents to do and social engagement activities. The facility itself was a little small, but it's recently been updated. Given its structural limitations, it was as good as it can be.

The Sapphire at McKenzie Manor has two different levels of memory care available. One has access to go outside within limits, and then there's another part that's more of a locked unit. The tour experience was unimpressive, which I guess would be the best way to describe it. The rooms were fine. There wasn't anything that stood out as bad, but there didn't seem to be anything that stood out as really exceptional either. The staff was attentive, from what I could see. Some rooms were shared, and those rooms were bigger. They seemed to be well-equipped. The single rooms, which I believe are more on the severe side, were significantly smaller but still within the range of an average bedroom. If I were staying in the room all the time, I might be a little claustrophobic. But everybody is available to get up, move around, and participate as part of that community. I didn't see any activities going on at the time I was there. The atmosphere was quiet, and there was no stimulation. They had two exterior areas. They were doing some kind of construction or maintenance where they were splitting off those two separate areas. I didn't see the staff interacting with the residents much.
