My father is at The Belvedere of Westlake. It is better than where he was at. I like it. The main issue was that he could have his pet with him there (because his cat is his whole world and more important than me). It was a more of a homey environment, as opposed to a hospital setting. It's not as institutionalized feeling. It looks like a Swiss chateau. It's nestled back in the woods. I didn't even know they were there, and I've lived in that neighborhood for over 30 years. The staff are excellent. They are really, really helpful. They call me any time anything happens or if they're going to do anything. Physical therapy comes in, and they let me know when they are there. They keep me abreast of visitations and what's going on. I'm very happy with them. My father loves their food. He is happy with his meals. I have seen him doing arts and crafts, but I haven't been up there when activities are going on. They give him a haircut once a month. They just took my father to go get his eye exam done, which was not free, but it was very reasonable. The fact of having that is a nice option. The staff have been phenomenal from day one. My father is in a locked ward. He can get access to the other parts of the facility, but he has to have someone with him. He doesn't have free range of the whole place. He can't go outside on his own because he has to be monitored, so he doesn't wander off. They have an ice cream or a malt shop in there. They have an actual bar in there.

We checked here. It is 50:50 between assisted living and memory care. The only unit I checked was the memory care because that's the only place they had space right this second time, but their assisted living residents mingled there all the time. There's co-mingling most of the day. It's only at night when there would be sundowning that tends to lead to needing for a locked unit. My mother would be escorted everywhere she needed to go; my father would pretty much have free roamed of the place. The apartment was very nice. It was a good size for the two of them. Each apartment looks like it has an indoor patio overlooking the main lobby. There's a place for them outside their door to set up chairs and a table to sit and chit chat outside of their apartment. It looks like a little house attached to another little house, and all the patios kind of look at each other, so they could sit on their patio and chit chat, but they're fully inside of a building. In their kitchenette area, there is a window that looks out to their patio, so that staff could walk by (if their door was closed) and look in and see them, but not when they're in their bedroom. Their bedroom is a closed-off area altogether in that kind of stuff. It was the only place that had in-room laundry. Even in their memory care, they had in-room laundry, so that their clothes never had to leave the room. What happens is that the staff comes in and does the laundry with the help of the resident in their room. They would take their sheets and pillowcases and stuff out to the main laundry, but their clothing never leaves the room. The staff comes in and helps them get it in the washer and dryer, and then my mom and dad would be allowed to help fold it so that they still had some ownership to their laundry getting done, so that was nice. I didn't like the bathroom in that one. The bathroom had a bathtub, and my father is not able to step into a tub. He can't do that, and that was not safe for him.

My father moved into the assisted living part. We're very pleased, he especially likes the meals, the people have been outstandingly kind and attentive to him, and since he is diabetic, he has nursing care all day. They've done a fabulous job of maintaining his sugar. His apartment is very nice, very roomy, he has more than enough room than he needs, and he has a washer and dryer inside the unit which is fabulous. This is a huge benefit. Sometimes they have inside activities and outside activities that they go out as a group.

My dad was here for rehab. It was an assisted living community and with a rehab facility. There were all kinds of planned activities throughout the day. They offered physical and occupational therapies, watched movies, and played cards or different kinds of games. They did a very nice job with my dad when he was there. The staff was accommodating and very pleasant to work with.

My uncle has not been here yet, but everything they have said to us like they will put him at the dining table with people his own age and own experience, they do the laundry and the meds, and they will monitor him when he is walking. He is 95 and needs some care, and I felt very comfortable. The one thing I really like is they have a nurse on the premises 24/7, and he is very close at that facility to the Cleveland Clinic in Avon, Ohio -- probably 6 or 7 minutes away. So that was another consideration because I am going to be thousands of miles away from him, and I needed to know that facilities would be available. Just on the visit and looking at the facility and everything that they said they were going to do et cetera, it was wonderful. As far as the food goes, they have a menu board up with 4 or 5 specials for the day. And if he would like something else, they seemed more than happy to do it. They always have soups, sandwiches, salads, and those kinds of things as well. So if maybe he is not that hungry and wants just a sandwich, they said they will make that which made me feel better as well. They have a beautiful courtyard with a fountain, and there is seating, so in the beautiful weather that we are going to have this summer, he can sit outside and enjoy nature, and it was beautifully done. I saw it a few weeks ago -- not quite the weather yet to have the flowers and everything out -- but they said the fountain has fish in it, and they have birds all over the grounds. So there are things to engage and make their time more enjoyable. They have a little café if he decides that he wants a cup of coffee, or a cookie or something else, they have that stuff out constantly during the day. They have showers, baths, and a whirlpool tub, so his needs as far as bathing goes will be met there. There are a lot of things that make it nice.

My mother stayed here. It's a very nice place. Her room was clean, equipped, and roomy enough for two people. The staff seemed to be OK. Mom is combative, and they couldn't even do her physical therapy with her at times. Mostly she just sat in her chair, and they talked to her and tried to take her for a walk up and down the hall. I was satisfied with the meals that she received there. The dining area looked fine with tables with chairs set up so they can push the wheelchairs right up to the tables. Family was welcome to join them, and if they can't take care of eating themselves, there's an aide there that helped them with that.
