Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
In addition to nursing home care, Bronx residents can also access other less expensive senior care services. Adult day health care is the most affordable, at less than $2,000 per month for daytime care in a group setting. Home health care and in-home care services are provided in the senior’s own home, and cost $4,957 per month. In-home care includes light chores and help with the activities of daily living (ADLs). Home health care also includes limited medical care. Seniors who require more hands-on ADL assistance can opt to reside in an assisted living facility at a cost of $5,991.
