The VA chose St. Rose Care Center for my husband and the VA is paying for it. It's small and caring. It's an established facility and has been there for several years. What I don't like about it is that it's so far from home; it's 4 and a half hours one way. It has a memory care, which is good. Right now, there are only 7 residents there and they have everything they need there. The residents are allowed to pretty much roam around as they like. I'm not sure what they do with group activities, but they're able to be together. From what I can see, it's quiet area. The staff is caring, professional, and most of them have been there for quite a whole. My husband also likes their food.

I have been at St. Rose for 11 weeks for rehab after surgery. While I would rate almost all of the staff as excellent, there are always one or two who are here for the paycheck and really don't care about the job. There is one nurse who has taken a dislike to me because I won't simply capitulate to her every order, and I am not as easy to control as the older, more vulnerable residents. This nurse bullies me when we are alone and has lied to me and about me to other staff and to my physician, to the point of knowing that I was receiving a medication that I refused due to side effects and keeping that information from me, my doctor and other nursing staff. The facility is currently investigating the situation. However, since they are investigating themselves, I doubt much will come of it. I have contacted and received help from the area Ombudsman. The food here ranges from decent to inedible, depending on the day. The meat is almost always cooked to a piece of dried out shoe leather (and occasionally a charred lump) and the canned veggies and fruit are the bulk variety that are mushy, over processed and tasteless. Meals are heavy in carbs. We rarely ever get fresh fruit or vegetables, although I learned that I can get a salad once a day if I request it. The cleanliness is fairly good, though staff sometimes uses things like a washcloth to clean an open wound, rather than sterile gauze. Diabetes care is outdated and the only way I was able to get better control of my blood sugars here was to petition my doctor for a change in orders, against the wishes of the aforementioned nurse - which some of the staff isn't happy about having to follow, as it causes them more work. Overall, I'd give the majority of the staff a 5 star rating, with a couple of exceptions, one glaring. The overall facility about a 4 star rating, due to staffing shortages which are mostly beyond their control. The food a three star rating. The activities seem to be decent.
