I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother was in rehab at Brookshire Nursing Center. The staff members were great. I had been a patient there in rehab a few years ago for about a month. I was aware of the care and the staff, which I was pleased with and why we had my mother go there. The cleanliness was good. The staff was well-schooled in caring. My mother had a private, good-sized room. The food was very good.

We are happy with Brookshire Nursing Center. My mother-in-law is in a double room but it's great for what she needs to have done. The security is very good at this place. I like the way they take care of my mom-in-law and they are real friendly. They meet the needs that she has to have. For what they're doing, the value for the money is fine. I think they need to have more staff. The food and the dining area was fine.

Brookshire was very expensive, but they had physical therapy, nice rooms, and it was clean. The food and the dining set up were OK.

    I visited this facility

I visited Brookshire Nursing. I like that it was small. Also we have known some of the folks who have parents there. The staff seemed very accommodating, friendly, and knowledgeable. Brookshire Nursing is a small facility, so it isn't anything so big that it isn't run efficiently. It seemed like a small, family-oriented place. They seemed to be efficient in what they do.

    I visited this facility

Brookshire Nursing Center was less attentive. They did not have a good staff to patient ratio, and they did not have well-organized activities for them to keep them actively involved. The aesthetics of it was very hospital-like, so it did not have a home feeling to it -- which was very important -- and the cost of it was high compared to what they had to offer. They were not full either. I think they were at about 40 percent capacity, and I can understand why.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I visited someone at Brookshire, so I got to see a lot of things there. The patients are waited on very well. They're not ill-tempered with the patients. Anytime that there's a problem, like if you have a roommate, and they're crying out loud at night, or something like that, they make arrangements to have that person or the other placed somewhere where it will not be a problem. They have a nice cafeteria. It's clean. It's much older, so it's not going to look as new and as pretty. They have a nice closet that both people share. The room is divided, and they had one bathroom between them. It's smaller than Mark's room where he lives. It's like each person has their own separate room, and then they have a little living area with a place for drawers to lock up their medicine in. I would not mind a member of my family being in there, because they are well taken care of.

Mom was in the hospital twice with pneumonia in December and then went in to Brookshire Nursing Center for a rehab. They had one nurse for 16 patients and they didn't have anybody that understood dementia. The CNAs and the OT help her get dressed. The staff was all good and competent. And I think they enjoy their work, but I just never understood why when they help get her dress they didn't have her put on clean socks or they wouldn't wash her hair when they gave her a bath. Every day we'd come in she'd have the same socks on and we have to change her. The first time I put her in was two days before Christmas and she cried and my daughter cried, so I brought her home for Christmas. She enjoyed the food except she hates green beans. They had arts and crafts like jewelry making, they have manicures on Monday, cards, bingo, movies, and reminiscing time where they could sit and talk.
