My husband is now at Highland House. I highly recommend them. They do a good job. The rooms are very nice. The dining area is adequate. They serve good meals too. If you can't go to the dining room, then they bring it to your room for you. The staff members are very good. When they come into your room, they're cheerful. They treat the patients like they care about them. They also show them respect. My husband was a chaplain, and the staff will call him, "Chaplain," whereas at the other places, they don't. They're really respectful. Also the place is very neat and clean.

My relative has been here for six years. I am sitting in the ED at Cape Fear with my family member who had to be taken to hospital because she has possible bowel blockage after complaining of nausea and sharp pain in abdominal area for two weeks. Once I met her at ED I now see a huge red area on her lower back which doctors tell me it is beginning of a bedsore. The nursing home has tried for four months unable to diagnose the problem and all the while it is skin breaking down because of lack of care and neglectful care from this facility among other things. I would not put my dog on this facility there is a lack of care compassion and trustworthiness.

I have a family member in this facility and I have followed the chain of command to get the appropriate nursing care for her. Not allowed to come out of their rooms for 9 days, somehow she got COVID19. Placed on the COVID19 Hall she went four days without a bath or getting to brush her teeth. I went on August 1st 2020 and made the director of nursing aware of this with other issues my family had called about, but she would not return any calls. The Director of Nursing stated if my family or myself had a concern to come to the facility and she would address it. Once my sister who does not walk when back to her room from recovering from COVID19 she was placed in a broken bed, with no side rails. I returned to the facility to speak to the Director again and having many calls from my sister in this facility begging for help. Staff placing her food tray across the room and leaving out. Staff saying when stating she wanted to get out of bed it's not your day to get up. The Director refused to come out to address these issues and told me to leave. Then again I asked to meet and she called the police. So if you have a family member in a long term care. Make sure you follow their care especially in the facility because the PATIENT HAS RIGHTS!

Nasty smell in hallways. Rooms drab. Staff overworked and stressed. To few workers. Residents seemed board. Food bland and of cheap quality. Nurses overworked, stressed and generally unhappy.

Highland House is very good. The staff was very helpful. I did see the rooms, and it was very clean. It's not gated. I think it is locked inside. One of the clients was coming out because we were going in, and one of the assistants came and got the patient, so they are really on top of it.

I have visited the facility a few times as a medical rep. The place is dark inside and is very updated. They say they recently renovated, but I cannot notice. They comment that they are losing business and don't know why. Well, to begin the staff is very rude to patients as I have witnessed and I have also seen no compassion in their work. They tell you everything you want to hear to gain the resident, but once in, the compassion stops. It reminds me of the Happy Gilmore movie when he takes his grandmother the the extended living facility!

I visit my father here 4-5 times a week at all different hours. Some of the staff is friendly. He is rarely clean or shaven and his finger nails are long and dirty. His bed was wet for days. The administrator tells you what you want to here at the moment but in the end I am just ignored. Basically all they do is dispense meds and tell him to go eat. There is also a problem with parking because staff members park in the designated visitor parking area because they are to lazy to walk....what does that tell you?!...

My aunt, who is 92 years old is residing at the Higland House currently. She has been there for 3 years now. She has dementia and has no relatives who live very close to the nursing home. I visit her annually when I am in the area. The first time I visited there, I immediately noticed the lack of that combination of anesthetic and urine that seems very prevalent normally in nursing homes. The nursing home has several gathering areas available for residents to sit with family and friends. There are a lot of windows, making the facility brighter and cheerier than your typical nursing home. There were also several outside areas available for seating as well. All the staff is very friendly, I guess that's the typical southern hospitality. One lady in particular, she was the manager of the facility took the time to speak with me and catch me up on some issues with my aunt. She told me she had on several occasions taken my aunt out for lunch since my aunt rarely gets visitors. She has also been working with a dentist to get my aunt false teeth. The last time I was at the facility my husband and I stayed while my aunt ate her lunch. I was pleasantly surprised how appealing the food looked and while I didn't sample any of the food myself, my aunt seemed to enjoy it.The several times I have been to the home, has always been a pleasant experience.
