My mother is situated at Hillcrest Convalescent Center, and she's going to be there for the long haul. They were the best choice because they had a bed available. The staff has been a little inconsistent, but they have been very good. The food choices are nice, but it's always cold. The food comes up to the room. It is not in the dining room, where it would probably be hotter. The only activities are her therapy. It's very homelike. It's a very pleasant atmosphere. It's not institutional. They have a gym, several outdoor courtyards, and a salon. They also offer what they call a spa, which I call hydrotherapy; it is included. There's a solarium or a sunroom area. It's a very, very spacious facility with a library. It's very old world. It was built in 1951, so it goes by standards of very gracious, large scale, spacious, and well furnished. We're currently on Medicare. It's unfortunately extremely expensive, but I think it's comparable to other places in Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill.

Hillcrest Convalescent Center was fantastic. The food was great and the rooms were reasonably nice, but their idea of helping me get better and get out of there was to use what they called a Sara lift to pick me up and move me from one place to the other. The therapists didn't do anything to help me regain my abilities. The people were nice, but they did absolutely nothing to help me physically regain what I had lost. The rooms were nice and carpeted, but I don't think they were ever cleaned. The only thing I liked about them was their rooms have a lot of cabinets and all of your medications were in that cabinet. The nurse has to come in there and unlock it and take your meds and give them to you, so there's no chance it can be mixed up with anybody else's. That was a big plus.

I was a resident of this "rehab" facility for over 3 weeks. Never again. It's a nursing home that offers minimal PT/OT. The CNA staff in recovery road for most part is what made it bearable. All too often short staffed though so minimum of care. TINY double, crammed rooms are dangerous. I will never recommend.

I honestly don't know how to rate food and/or activities. My husband was so sick when he went to Hillcrest that he didn't participate in either. The gentleman who was in charge of admissions was extremely positive when I called. This is the reason that I chose Hillcrest. This positive attitude and the fact that we had had other people in Hillcrest in the past.

Some of the staff is good. Some of the staff is poor. They listen to you sometime and ignore you other times. Managers really don’t care til family come and say something. Look for a place that don’t just take your money. But care for you and the staff. One of the ladies also hit my roommate. She was hospitalized after the fact on recovery road hall.

Hillcrest Convalescent Center is wonderful. I went there twice. They're very good and they have good physical therapy. They have a gorgeous dining room and the food is delicious. Every afternoon they have ice cream and you can make your own sundae. I had a private room. The facilities were nice, clean, and attractive. It was a very good experience.

Hillcrest Convalescent Center has rehab and skilled nursing. I was in rehab and skilled. The staff members were wonderful. They had both a dining room and a sunroom, and in the sunroom, they had ice cream, so any time in the afternoon or evening, you could scoop your own ice cream, which was lots of fun. It was a beautiful, well-landscaped, and very nice place. The reason I left was because they’re quite a bit more expensive than the assisted living facilities, and I did not need the skilled nursing care. There were a lot of things going on in the community. Wonderful activities. The reason I picked them when I was being discharged from the hospital was because I only heard wonderful comments from people that had gone there following hip replacement or injuries. They have a very good reputation for getting good recovery care.

My sister is at Hillcrest Convalescent Home, and that is an excellent facility. We don't call it Hillcrest; we call it a hotel because it gives you an atmosphere that it is not a nursing home. She has been down there since April, and they have taken excellent care of her. The dining facility is excellent. What they do is they give bigger meals to the clients during the afternoon meal. It is a good dining hall -- very formal looking -- and the food is good. They also had a facility for those who cannot feed themselves and they help feed them. She loves it. It is a privately owned facility, and they have their own hospice program. They don't allow hospice to come into that facility. They have their own doctor for the people who have that need. Her room was very spacious with a private bathroom; she has everything she needs right there. They always have some sort of activity going on. They have jewelry making class, and people come in for entertainment. They have a festival, they decorate the dining room, and they invite the family, but they didn't charge the family any money to eat there. One thing about this facility from all the facilities that I have been to, and it doesn't matter what time of day, but there are always people interacting with their loved ones. They have a chapel in there, and they have different worship services. They have an activities room, and they were well known for their OT and PT. One part of the building is for the recovery, and they are always busy. It is amazing because these people were no pressure for the workers, and they enjoy their jobs. The security is good. There a lot of doors in the facility, but they have alarms on their chairs. If they go by the door, the alarm goes on.

Hillcrest was excellent. They were top of the line. They had a gym, but they don't have a pool.

Some of the nursing assist. can be rude and very rough handle somebody. When I went in I could hardly move by myself and most of them were very good. But I had one that tried to move me by herself and it really hurt. I was there 2 months and still could not even turn over by myself when I left. The Physical Therapist were very good. The room was great the biggest bathroom I have every seen. The food was okay, not great but thats the way it goes. That was 5 years ago and I hope they still have the ice cream in the lobby most of the time that was a good thing. It wasn't that bad but I was so glad to get home of course I almost slid out of my wheelchair on the drive from there to Pfafftown. I was a long ride.

I ask around and was told that Hillcrest Convalescent Center and Nursing Home was a very good place and had excellent rehabilitation services. My mom had a bad experience years ago and I was hoping this one would be good. Looks can be deceiving. The nursing and cna staff have bad attitudes and make you feel like you are bothering them whenever you ask them for anything. My mom got worst there instead of better. I had to request for them to send her back to the hospital otherwise she might not be here today. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

My only consistant complaint is the food service. Not too good. Trays are not checked for accuracy and the menu selections are not taylored for residents ages and abilities to handle selections. For example: Hoagies, ruben sandwiches, hot dogs, chicken on the bone....I think you understand. The folks of this generation seem to want meat and 3 vegetables for dinner, lighter lunches, ie soups, sandwiches and fruit plates ( homemade spreads and quality meats on loaf bread). Not heavy meals in the middle of the day. Hot and cold items at the proper temp; not preparing meals too far ahead or sitting for long amounts of time in the hot box on the hallway. That's it in a nut shell. Other issues are just general houskeeping issues and renovations needed in certain wings.

My sister was there during the last weeks of her life (she was younger than most residents at age 50). She was dying of cancer and in home health care was not sufficient for her needs. The staff was caring, compassionate and responsive to her needs. They were able to help her die with dignity and respect. Even though she was only there for a few weeks, they cried with us upon her passing. The nurses and nurses assistants really cared about their patients; it was more than just a job, it was a calling. I would not hesitate to place a loved one there.

Hillcrest is a wonderful place. The staff are great and they have nursing staff at all times which is a very important issue for me. They have many activities that my mother is involved in. They have a nice dining area. They were able to accommodate my mom particularly in any way.

In the past, I would have given Hillcrest excellent reviews. After the recent experience a family member had there I would say otherwise. My uncle had his knee replaced and was going to stay here for around 3 months for rehab. The room he was placed in was shared with another man. The thermostat was set so high that my uncle was sweating as was everyone else in the room except for the other man. The high temperature of the room caused my uncle to become dehydrated and had to be placed in the hospital to receive fluids and blood. During his stay he had to bring in his own prescriptions that he was previously taking (2 in the AM)Although several family members told the RN that the morning nurse was only giving him 1 of the 2 required pills (even though the bottle says 2) the RN did not speak enough English to understand that he was not getting the correct dose, and the morning nurse just wouldn't give him his medication.

The Hillcrest facility is truly one of a kind. The staff was attentive and always put the patients safety and needs first. My family was always informed and taken care of. The food and dining was always excellent and well prepared. The activities that were availible to the residents were always stimulating and entertaining. My recommendation for any one looking for top of the line care goes to Hillcrest.

My grandmother had a wonderful time at Hillcrest. She was there for physical therapy following a knee replacement, but I heard much more from her about all the nice people she'd met than about how hard the therapy was. (That's atypical for her.) She and her roommate agreed that the food was great, and they loved the free ice cream! Apparently afternoon coffee and cookies were quite a social event, and hanging out on the front porch was quite popular too. She got her nails done twice during her stay, and made some beaded jewelry. There were beautiful birds in the main lobby and huge fish tanks in the smaller lobbies between the resident rooms. The whole place felt very inviting more like a big family home than a medical facility. We were allowed to use a meeting room for our Sunday night family dinners while she was there. There were even games in there for the kids. Being able to visit with her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids was a big emotional boost for her.

Hillcrest is a newly renovated convalescent center located a few short miles from Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. With over 150 beds, the oldest nursing home in North Carolina is nothing short of breathtaking. Walking in to the home, you are greeted with warm, neutral colors, self-playing pianos and colorful parrots in the lobby. The home gives a vibe of safety, security and high quality. Once familiar with the home, however, it is very apparent that the home is lacking in the CNA department. The nurses' assistants are distant and rarely check on patients. We once asked for someone to help with a catheter at 10:30am and no one had come until 2pm! They are extremely short staffed when it comes to LPN's and Pharmacists and the CNA's are rude, sometimes disrespectful and sometimes just down right lazy. After using Hillcrest's services, I doubt that I would recommend them to anyone else. Other places may not look as nice, but maybe the care provided will be better.
