I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Carolina Reserve of Durham is a very well laid out, friendly community. The assisted living studio apartments are nice size. In general, the place was well-run and very clean. My friend's mom is there and she's been there for about a year now and she's been pretty happy with the food. There are choices in the dining room. It's very nice.

Provider Response

Hello Lisa, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a 5-star review! Your positive feedback means a lot to us, and we're thrilled you had a great community experience. We genuinely appreciate your support.

I visited this facility

We went to Carolina Reserve of Durham. It's close to home. It's well-staffed. It's clean. It's continuing care. And they have a dementia unit. We already have a relationship with them because we have worked with them and one of their sister organizations. So it was very collegial and very professional, and all our questions were answered. It was great.

I visited this facility

We liked Carolina Reserve of Durham better than others. The place was a little smaller, friendlier, and less institutional than the others. The people were very cordial and warm. There seemed to be plenty of staff around. Their rooms were a little bit larger. In their two-bedroom unit, for example, each bedroom was separate within the unit. There's a small living room for common use, but the sleeping areas were separate. Each of the sleeping areas was large enough to bring in the furniture you may want, a large lounge chair, and a TV set, that kind of thing. I liked the idea of having a roommate, but not being necessarily on top of one another. It seemed well-taffed. It was very clean. They had more activity rooms. They had more space in general within the place. I liked it. They had therapy. The facility seemed top-notch.

At Carolina Reserve of Durham I was able to observe how the technicians and the other staff interacted with the clients that they had there, and I liked what I saw. The staff seems to be really friendly, more of a family type of atmosphere, and that's what I wanted for my sister. The area is kept clean. There were activities that were posted that I saw up on the wall. I also looked at the types of menus and things that were also on the wall in the dining area. I felt that this would be a good place for my sister. The admission coordinator is really helpful. I can talk to her and she lets me know everything like updates and what's happening with physical therapy and whether or not they've gotten orders for certain things, so I can call the provider and say to them they need X, Y, and Z. It's more of a three-way conversation so that my sister can get everything that she needs. They're really on top of things at this point for me, and I'm happy to alleviate a lot of the stress that I was going through or what-have-you. It's a good fit. The amenities are nice. No issues or anything like that. My sister has her own little area. She pretty much can get comfortable in that area. There is a library. There is a common area where there's a television set in there, and then sometimes they have activities in that room. They have the activity room, too. So far, my sister has participated in bingo. I know there's a musician coming in tonight. I know they offer her things or whatever. I get the report as far as what's going on with her because I'm very involved in her care. I'm really happy with the care that she is receiving.

I liked Carolina Reserve of Durham. I just felt that it was so small and compact compared to the other facility that's got two sunrooms, an outdoor area, and larger hallways. I kind of felt a little claustrophobic there. They were going through some renovations as well, but it was very nice and clean. The person that I originally had the appointment with was not there, so a gentleman took me around. He was still new and didn't seem to be extremely knowledgeable about which side was assisted living and which side was memory care, but he showed me where they ate (a restaurant-type dining area) and where they had therapy. I came in early so he did his best to accommodate me.

I visited this facility

Carolina Reserve of Durham was the fourth one we toured. It was very easy to navigate. It had adequate security for entrance and for a family to visit. It was very clean and very well kept. The dining area was very clean. Out of the ones we saw, this one had the smallest number of residents in memory care. I would describe it as very homey. The rooms were spacious and adequate for a memory care resident. The staff was very informative and very enthusiastic. However, the facility just seemed a little more aged than the other facility.

Carolina Reserve of Durham was a very nice community. The staff engaged with the residents. I like the activities that they have. During the time of my tour, they weren't doing any activities, but I saw different videos. The staff member who gave me the tour, she showed me videos of their different activities. I just liked that it was a more brighter type facility. They had it decorated very nicely for the holiday. It was a much brighter experience than the other facility. They weren't eating at the time, but the dining facility looked fine. Everything looked nice. The staff member was a very excited person. She really enjoyed her job. I really valued her opinion and her passion for being a caregiver. I liked her energy, and she had a lot of answers, and a lot of examples, and just showed me a lot. She was great.

I was very impressed upon my initial visit with Carolina Reserve of Durham. The staff were warm, open, and generous, not only with my mother but with each other, which was important to me. The staff treated each other very well. They have a nice cooperative working relationship and work very well as a team. I appreciated that, and the community activities are very appropriate for my mother and her ability. I also appreciated that cable was included with the price. That was really handy. My mom wanted her own phone, and she was able to, by just hooking into their already available internet service. Those are two costs that just made the situation much better. The activities director is very clever and I was very impressed with her. They have done things on the holidays and I took her great grandson to visit her. They could go into the activity room where they have a table set up for puzzles, colors, and pictures appropriate for the seasons. They play bingo all the time, too, which is a very popular thing in the community, and they have concerts every week where a local musician comes in and does a piano concert with them. My mom actually likes the food. The layout is just perfect, especially for those who are using wheelchairs.

I thought Carolina Reserve of Durham was very nice and the staff was very helpful and friendly. It was just the memory care unit was a little smaller than what we wanted for our mother, but everything else seemed nice. It's a good place.

I visited this facility

I toured Carolina Reserve of Durham and the staff was very helpful. Assisted living had single rooms and they had shared rooms. They had a dining room and a salon. None of the rooms had any kitchens in them. The options were a single bedroom with a bath or a shared room with a separate bedroom, but you share amenities, like a bath.

The staff is very caring and listens to the needs of the residents. There are around 6 activities a day during the week which provide a lot of stimulation for the residents. The front porch is a loved gathering place. The living room is great for watching movies and listening to entertainment. The library is beautiful, warm and inviting. The dining room is very nice and a fun place for residents to eat and chat.

My brother is in Spring Arbor of Durham. They have day trips, and they serve three meals and snacks. They have a barber come around if they want a haircut. The staff is very helpful and keep his room straight and neat. The food is pretty good.

Spring Arbor of Durham is a really nice place. I was able to visit a month ago, and the staff that I met was very nice. They were able to show me double rooms, and it was very spacious.

At Spring Arbor, the marketing person was very nice and attentive, they answered my questions, and I felt welcome. The facility itself was in very bad shape. It didn't smell good. The people -- their functional level -- appeared much lower to me, but when I walked in, there was like a main lobby, there were three wings that you can go off to the rooms, and off the main lobby was the dining facility. They kind of just bring all the residents to the center of this main lobby and leave them hanging there until it is time to eat, but the biggest thing was that the cleanliness of the facility was not good.

Spring Arbor was simply a nice place. It’s fairly new. We looked at the rooms; they were refurbishing them. It was a one bedroom and a kitchen. It was kind of combined. For an old person, it’s appropriate. They all seemed to be friendly and accommodating. They had different things going on there. They had a singer, and they were all sitting and listening to him. The dining facility was pretty big.

I am/was a resident of this facility

Spring Arbor of Durham is in a very good location, and convenient to major transportation arteries and attractions, the building and grounds are kept up in a reasonable fashion, and you certainly could not find a better activities coordinator than Steve. However, having lived there for three years, when it came to personal care, I had a number of concerns. Significant and continuous turnover among direct care staff, and the fact that they allow persons with criminal records to work directly with, and care for, residents (including those with some short-term memory challenges) means that jewelry, nicer clothing items, electronics, and even supplies & finer toiletries tend to disappear on a regular basis, and are never be recovered. It is so commonplace that there is little motivation to correct this problem. I finally had to seek out another facility.
