The staff in Elderwood at Hamburg is doing their job. The food is good, and they have decent amenities and nice grounds. My father's room is pretty austere but, it's fine. They have activities for the residents, although he doesn't participate in them yet. It's awfully expensive, but he has improved dramatically. They're doing a good job.

Understaffed. Few great staff members, but many more who ignore the call lights for hours at a time. Would you want your mother sitting in her own waste for hours? Many of these residents don’t have a voice of their own. I fear for them, as this is a grim fate. For the cost, you would think at a bare minimum they wouldn’t just turn off a call light without asking what the problem is.

My aunt was in this facility following a stroke. We did have some amazing nurses and caregivers, but unfortunately our overall experience was negative. I had a care plan meeting where I was told my aunt gained 1.5 pounds and was making improvement. Three days later, was told by her nurse that she was steadily loosing weight and not eating, had lost 9 pounds. The rooms are terrible. She fell 4 times in the span of 3.5 weeks that I know of. She was bathed and wheeled down the hall in nothing but a sheet. I would not recommend this facility to anyone or their loved one.

Please be clear when reviewing this facility which location you are reviewing. Is it the one on Maelou or the one on Buffalo St? My mother has been in the one on Maelou a few times. The nursing and CNA staff are great. I can’t say that for the therapy manager and/or social worker. They do not communicate well. We had to do all the work in terms of placement options for my mother. If you are discharging someone who will need 24/7 care, wouldn’t it behoove everyone to know that in time to find ongoing care? Why don’t they have work cell phones? Leaving messages on an office line is archaic. So is asking families to meet with them during the day Monday through Friday before 4 pm. The days of daytime availability are gone for most people. It’s 2018, folks. Get with the program.

My mother is in permanent long term care at the Hamburg facility. Our issues are not with the staff - they work hard and try their best. But the place as a whole is very dysfunctional - classic case of the left arm doesn't know what the right arm is doing. The result is high turnover, workers working long hours, resulting in overall mediocre care. My mother has experienced issues with them changing medicines without advising her, frequent occurrences of boils on her legs and arms, and most recently, spiders in her room. She gets bathed twice a week in lukewarm water. Food has deteriorated. Hopefully the state gets involved and the owners (whomever they are) stop looking at their bottom line and start focusing on their mission - caring for thier patients.

They were very attentive, it was very clean, and my mom was very well-cared for. They answered family questions and concerns; they were just really good. Elderwood was very nice, there were rooms for the family to get together other the patient care rooms, and the outside grounds were really nice. They had lots of nice outside seating during good weather. It was really nice.

My father is at Elderwood. My experience there was not good. In fact, we're taking him back home tomorrow. He has been there for about a month, but they made a lot of mistakes in his care; that's why we're getting him out of there. The room is OK, but it is like a hospital room. The food is OK, but not great. They have a full calendar of activities, but he is really too sick for any of them. Overall, primarily, they need to improve on medical care, like getting instructions right.

My grandmother stayed at Elderwood for a little over three months in the rehabilitation sector and was recently released home. She had to stay at Elderwood for Rehabilitation due to a surgery in her back to regain feeling back in her legs and then suffering a stroke that resulted in lose of feeling and strength on her right side. She came home non-ambulatory and is in a wheelchair full-time and can only be moved via a Hoyer lift. When Elderwood discharged my grandmother, we (her family and primary caregivers) were not given much information. We were given a script for a wheelchair with no other information (size, type of leg rests, other necessary information), and no real training on how to use the adaptive equipment necessary. We have received many different directions from many different people and were not given a straight answer. As of now, my grandmother has been home for 3 days and has not been able to get comfortable because the wheelchair does not fit her and she cannot move herself to situate herself in the chair. This has caused much stress for everyone in my family and we are just trying to make it so my grandmother stays comfortable and healthy and Elderwood did not give us enough information or help to do so after she left their care.

Elder Wood had three floors with various wings. They were very clean. One wing was a rehab, and another wing was dedicated to people who would not stay there very long. They had various services. The third floor was set aside for people with dementia and Alzheimer's. The second floor was for the permanent residents, and the first floor was for therapy, dining room, and rehab. I was there for rehab, and I hated every minute of it. It wasn't their fault. I was just an independent person and I wanted to go home.

They had rehabilitation on the first floor, and then they had a nursing home on the next two floors. My 96-year-old lady friend, she was there for about four years. She started out in the rehab on the first floor, which wasn’t too bad. Then when she got moved up to the nursing home on the second floor, there they had a smell. Like a urine smell from the diapers and stuff. I don’t think they had enough staff working. The couple of nurses and aide I met were wonderful and treated her nicely, but they could've used more help. I was there a few times, and the floor was sticky in her room. Maybe she spilled something and it didn’t get cleaned properly. The first winter she was there, from Thanksgiving to Easter she was quarantined to her room because she had an intestinal condition. I thought that was cruel and inhuman. I don’t know the normal procedure, but that's a long time to be stuck in her room. The first floor, where you walk in, was nice looking. They had a piano, and they had sofas and stuff, but once you start to get off the first floor it's not like that. A lot of the residents would just sit by the TV. It could’ve just been the time I was visiting.

We are happy with the quick and efficient acceptance of my mom into Elderwood Healthcare. Her follow-up care and continued placement care has been very positive. One of the very important factors for us is the cleanliness of the facility and the supportive staff. We can also visit anytime.

My grandfather was a resident there as he had dementia until his death. He was in an assistant living with a Catholic Organization but he was caught out walking the streets and forgetting where he was. We had to put him the faculty so it was closer to my father who was a lot better at health care proxy than his brothers or sisters. The facility was very nice, their own rooms, very clean, nice people and a lot of activities for the residents.Their rooms was a nice size, which was taken care of by the respected staff. I would say the staff is one of the greatest part of Lakewood. They are very kind and helpful and you can tell these people want to take care of the residents there. The facility itself is very clean, well maintained and doesn't have that smell you get from other facilities.
