Friendship Village Kalamazoo was a clean place. It was very nice. It was kind of basic as far as the hallways, decoration, and that type of thing. We weren't impressed with the person that gave us the tour. She seemed more like a marketing person, and was interested in selling us something rather than finding out about our parents and things like that. We're also looking at a two-bedroom place for my parents, and they had a two- to five-year waiting list for their two-bedroom units, so that kind of took them out of the running right away, just because our parents are 86 and 87, and we don't have two to five years before we need to move them some place, but we had friends that had a really good experience there, and so we wanted to tour it. They have a pool, a salon, and an auditorium for programs. In fact, there was a singer there doing showtunes the day we were touring. They have of course a restaurant, and I think a separate little cafe type thing for people.

Friendship Village Kalamazoo is a big complex. They have a beautiful fitness center with a full-time fitness trainer, a nice library, a nice, beautiful dining room with nice tablecloths and flowers on the dining room tables, an art gallery, and there are patches for people who want to garden. They also have walking trails. They have apartments and also garden homes for people who want individual homes. We were pleased with the people who worked there and are living there. The staff was friendly, helpful, and cooperative.

Friendship Village was very good, and they're hard to get into. It had a very good management. They know how to take care of their residents. It was one of the top senior places in the area.

Friendship Village is great. It’s very clean, and the town houses and the staff are very nice. The PT is very good, and the rehab section is excellent. They’re thinking about putting in a pool, which would be great.

Friendship Village is a huge community, and they have senior cottages. They have concerts, musicians, and visiting professors -- lots of activities. The staff was very nice, but it was not as friendly. The dining area was fabulous, and it’s dated.

We have been very pleased with the care that mom has been getting at Woodside at Friendship Village. I noticed there were turnovers of different caregivers and nurses and that's understandable, but the ones that had been caring for her has been very helpful and very friendly. My mother has some complaints about the food as she gets tired of chicken. She had gone to their resident consult meetings before and she expressed herself and they have made changes and tried to accommodate the wishes of my mother.

My dad lives in Friendship Village for the last five or six years and he just move from the third floor to the dementia ward. I like the dementia ward the best. It is more homey. They caregivers are good and they bake cookies. They even put on movies after dinner. They are also around more and do more in helping the people better. When he is in the assisted living, his room is not as clean as it is now.

There are several different buildings at Friendship Village including a nursing home, assisted living building and a dementia assisted living building. What I toured was the regular assisted living building, which I was extremely impressed with. This facility is extremely beautiful and home-like. Residents have private rooms that they can decorate how they wish. Additionally, there are computers, a library, several dining areas that the residents can socialize at. Also there are several activities that are conducted throughout the day the residents can choose to participate in or not. Activities include discussions on major issues, crafting, group outings, and exercise programs. Unlike other nursing homes, there is not a strict schedule that the resident is forced to follow. They can choose what they wish to do and choose when they want to do it. Staff is on call 24/7 in order to assist with ADLs (dressing, eating, toileting etc.) The staff seemed to be very friendly and willing to do whatever it takes to ensure the resident is safe, comfortable and happy.
