Our experience with Grand Oaks Nursing Center is very good. My mother and my aunt are both up there now, and I think it's a phenomenal place. It's a nursing home, there's not a whole lot of amenities. There are two to a room, they have arts and crafts. If it's not during COVID, they are allowed to go out and go outside and do things as they go on trips, but with COVID, they've eliminated some of that. You can walk all through this facility and not smell any unpleasant smells, it's very clean. Their food is not bad. They have to be careful with seasoning, so it's a little bland. They've got variety, if they don't want what's the meal, they can have a salad. It's ordered through Sysco, if they don't want a cooked breakfast, they can have cereal, so they're pretty lenient on their food. I can't say enough good things about them. I really can't. We do a care conference every three months, and if there's something that comes up within that three months, they're quick to call me and let me know what's going on. They're usually very community-minded and bring the people out into the community, like to the parades, but they couldn't this year because of COVID.

This is a beautiful new facility. I had been to the old one when it was attached to a state run corrections facility, and that idea was kind of scary to me. At both locations the staff seemed very friendly and seemed to take very good care of the residents. My grandmother was very happy while in the nursing home and was taken care of well. It seemed as though the residents all were able to interact with each other and gained new friendships at a possibly difficult time in their life. I know quite a few of the people that work there and it seems as though everyone is very satisfied with their jobs there. I believe that is another important factor when it comes to the level of care that they are providing to their residents. If I had to put another family member here for care, I would feel confident doing so without hesitation.

When I visited Grand Oaks they were having trouble at the time with residents trying to run away from the facility. As a result, they kept all of the doors locked and none of the residents were allowed to roam about outside by themselves. I had to push a button on the door in order to be buzzed in. The facility appeared to be clean and busy with a lot of things for the residents to do each week. The reasons for the residents to attempt escape were unknown to me, but I heard of many incidents in which elderly patients with dementia were found wandering around on the streets. There was a cockatiel in a cage with a mis-shapen beak and I felt sorry for the bird as it was in too small a cage for its size and probably had trouble eating due to the beak deformity. I wondered at the time if the residents were as well cared for as that bird. I noticed that the meals were nutritious and well portioned and there appeared to be an adequate amount of nurses working in the facility.

I only have a moment......but what I want to say is Thank You. My Mother Margaret DeFay is a resident at this location.......It is a home that she loves..She loves the special attention..The kindness and the love of the care givers. They kiss her on the check to wake her up and listen to her. I appreciate the Doctor and staff that are there for her at all times. She has health issues and this is a great relief for her and for me. She thinks of this home as an extended family.....I am appreciative, thankful and hopeful that her late years will continue to be happy. This place is an answer to her prayers and to my prayers. From the bottom of my heart. Thank you...........
