What to Consider About Memory Care in Santa Monica

Santa Monica is a beachfront community of over 92,000 people on the Pacific shore of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. Nearly 40 million people live in California, seniors over the age of 65 make up 15 percent of the population, and at least 650,000 people in the state have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Santa Monica has 46 memory care facilities inside its borders to take care of those living in the city.

Many of Santa Monica's memory care facilities operate as standalone properties, though some others are located on or near the grounds of assisted living communities. Properties that focus on treating seniors with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, Huntington's disease and advanced forms of Parkinson's disease are sometimes called residential care facilities for the elderly (RCFEs) in official documents, and all such sites in California are regulated by the state Department of Health and Human Services, Senior Care Division.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Memory Care in Santa Monica

  • Santa Monica has a coastal climate that is close to some people's idea of paradise. Summer highs this close to the coast hover around 71 degrees Fahrenheit, even in August and September, the hottest months in most of California. Winters average 50 degrees overnight in December, and the city gets just 13 inches of rain in a typical year. The fresh sea breeze that blows on most days clears away the smog and pollen that can aggravate seniors' asthma, and the mild temperatures with medium humidity here are easy on Seniors' COPD.
  • Santa Monica's cost of living is, unsurprisingly, very high. Overall costs here are more than double the national average, at 105 percent more than the typical cost to live anywhere else in America. Housing is the major driver of this expense, and healthcare can be nine or 10 percent higher in Santa Monica than elsewhere.
  • Crime rates in Santa Monica are somewhat higher than is common for a California city, though not dramatically so. Violent crime rates are roughly 20 percent higher in Santa Monica than the state average, while property crime rates are close to 30 percent higher.
  • The Santa Monica area is home to world-class medical facilities, including those specializing in brain health and dementia care such as UCLA Medical Center-Santa Monica and Providence St. John's Health Center, in the event of medical emergencies or illness.

Memory Care Laws and Regulations in Santa Monica

Santa Monica-area memory care communities must adhere to the comprehensive set of state laws and regulations that all memory care communities in California are required to follow. Visit our Memory Care in California page for more information about these laws.
