First off they are severely understaffed. On the night of arrival for rehab they proceeded to put my spouse in a bed that was not cleaned. The O2 tubing from a discharge was still on the rail, the bedside table sticky with food on it. There are earwigs and other critters running around. My spouse never got the right food. He should have had high protein and no gas-forming foods and the portions were toddler-sized and most of the time not as posted. A nurse tried to feed him meds mixed on a spoon, he is alert and coherent, and never told him what they were. Another nurse put the wound vac on wrong which caused damage to his skin and I am sure no incident report was written. They tried keeping him longer than they said. They kept saying they didn't want a further infection but he was released to go back to part-time work and I had to fight with them. The Administer was understanding and trying to fix the issues but he can only do so much. We never got a proper discharge summary or discharge orders which the primary asked for. So in its present state I do not recommend this facility.

My father was in Vero Health and Rehab of South Hadley for two months. It was sort of hard to get direct answers in a way, because no one is around, and I had trouble with a social worker there. She wasn't so up front. She doesn't return calls, and there were a lot of communication issues there, it seems. He fell a couple of times, he was taken to the hospital, and he got COVID. This past two months were hard on him, and he passed away. He was there for rehab first, he maxed that out, and Medicare wouldn't pay for anything more. They said he reached a suitable plateau, but he never was able to walk again. But on the other end of it, the nursing part, he was not mobile anymore. He was laying in bed and sleeping a lot, and he lost his ability to walk. We couldn't go inside because of COVID regulations. All we had were a couple of window visits. The lobby was a fine place, it was professional with people walking through, and they met me outside most of the time if they had something to say to me. The physical therapist spent some time with my brother and me and basically explained the situation. There was a nurse, they put him on some medication, she came out and explained the situation, and then that social worker and another woman filled me in on how Medicare works. He was in a two-person room. The staff was professional, they were knowledgeable, but you're just not going to reach them right away. You have to give them some time to come to you. It might be the next day, or you might have to make another phone call to them. The way they spoke, they knew their field.

The nursing staff is very kind, attentive, and I really get a sense that they take their nursing skills seriously. The house Physician saw her immediately on arrival, and put plenty of 'prn's' in case of slight pains, constipation, etc. But, It's day 3 and I've yet to get a call from a social worker or anyone introducing themselves (by phone) as staff. You would think this would be standard. My relative is 100. The food last night was awful: white sliced package-type bread on the bottom, fresh, canned chicken gravy and bits of chicken from a can on top, lukewarm, 1/3c of previously frozen cauliflower, slightly gray, and 9 (partially) stuck together pre dipped, frozen, and baked french fries, stiff and cold. The cranberry beverage is a juice-drink. It appears the food budget is close to $1.00 a meal, so don't blame the chef or the kitchen staff. Thus far it looks like the quality of care is excellent, but my aunt will drop 5 pounds in the first week. Be advised to see the meal arrive, make a judgment, and bring her a bagged lunch.

The staff was nice and helpful at all times, they took very good care of my aunt, Wingate's are one of the cleanest nursing home I've been in, I work has a EMT and go into a lot of different Nursing homes and you can tell which are good or bad. I give the Wingate a high rating and would place another family member in if I had to. Most nursing homes have a smell to them when you walk in but you don't get that with most Wingate nursing homes. this one is def on my top 5 nursing home to put family members into.
