Raphael House would be my number one choice because it was small and the residents were very friendly. While we were interviewing the director, a resident came in who needed a hug. She apparently does this several times a day. They took time from interviewing us to take care of her and talk to her, and I didn't feel put out. I was impressed with them. They have staff members 24/7, so if an emergency happens during the night, they just call upstairs and they can come down. It was small enough that people can get to know each other. You can sit with whoever you want in the dining room, and the meals were very nutritious. They're very welcoming. It's run by a non-profit, so their aim isn't to make money. The only room I was shown had a bedroom and living room together, as well as a bathroom. They were planning on going down to Washington D.C. to see the cherry blossoms. The place was homey, it has a living room and a library, and it's right next to a church and a school, so the children from the school come over to do things for the residents.

My mother, who lived with me for four years, actually requested to go to Raphael House after visiting several times with me. I teach chair yoga there and Mom would accompany me and participate. She made many friends and fell in love with the staff. My mother has been a resident for just over a year, now. She is happier and healthier than I have seen her in years. I am extraordinarily grateful to the competent and loving staff who sees to it that she takes her medications regularly and uses her respiratory equipment properly. The director of the Raphael House even helped me procure a portable oxygen concentrator when I was having difficulty with the provider. I cannot speak highly enough of the Raphael House and its wonderful staff!
Provider Response
Thank you DCGold for your wonderful review. It is rare for a senior to request to go to Assisted Living. I am glad your mother liked what she saw and wanted to make her own decision. Thank you for your kind words about the staff including Nelly the director. We could not do it without each of them.

I chose Raphael House because it was nice and they would give me a subsidy. The staff are taking good care with her. They have an exercise class, dance class for seniors and they do gardening. Those are the only ones that my mother does participate, but I know they also do knitting and I think they have chorale groups come in.

St Rapahel's, as a whole, is a nice place to live. It is located near the St Raphael church, but the center accepts people of all religions. The center is very clean. It is located in a nice green area, so people can take walks around, or be outside and read. Many activities are organized, and are announced at the beginning of each day, and are advertised on a white board. The activities go from sing-alongs to charades. There are outings every week to various places from Cabin John Center to parks. And once in a while they try to have bigger outings to cultural places such as museums. They also celebrate all holidays. So if it is Saint Patrick's day, they decorate the center in green. Many members of the staff are bilingual, usually they speak Spanish and English, which is nice for the seniors, since many are from Spanish speaking families. The staff is friendly, and they try and engage seniors in activities, but like in many homes it is difficult to get seniors involved. The food is fine, but not exceptional. Visits are allowed without pre-notice, but the center prefers to be notified.
