HarborChase of South Portland is new. It offers a lot of field trips and things. They're only a 43% capacity, so I think they're a little lacking in some care areas, but overall, it's a good facility. My father has been there for almost a month now in assisted living. The meals are very good. The staff that are there are good, but they need more staff. They have many activities. They have a lot of live musicians like a piano player that comes in and they do different concerts once or twice a week for an hour, and they do bus trips. They went out for lunch and ice cream.

HarborChase of South Portland was at about 65 percent capacity, so everything was very new, bright, open, and fancy. The lobby area reminded me of a hotel. They had a piano bar on the top floor. The apartments were typical and lovely. The person that did the tour was very thorough to the point that she kept us for a very long time. She wanted to make sure that we had all the information that we needed. They had multiple dining areas. There's a formal dining room, a regular dining room, and then a bistro dining area. It was just not a good match for us, and it was extremely expensive. Once we got in there, there were lots of fees and extras.

I thought HarborChase of South Portland was a five-star hotel. It was a very beautiful place. The woman who gave me the tour was kind. It looked like a great spot. They had a bar. They do a cocktail hour. They have movies. They have a gorgeous room where you could eat. They also have a private room if you want to have a party with your family. It's a beautiful building.

The only place I visited was the HarborChase of South Portland. The staff there was friendly and welcoming. They showed me around. The only reason we didn't choose it was because it was brand new, and we needed somebody to be there for my father daily because of his issues that he had. They actually showed me the memory care, which I didn't want that at first because he wasn't a threat or anything like that. He just needed to have somebody check on him. He can dress himself and all that stuff; that's why we wanted more of an assisted, instead of more like a nursing home (which is what the memory care is to me). I just kind of walked through, and there were just barely a few people there. The staff showed me two or three places in there where they could eat, and they were all really nice places. They have activities and stuff like that daily.

My husband is in the HarborChase of South Portland. It just opened. It's a brand new facility, it's very nice, it's a lovely facility, and I've been very happy with the staff. They've been very open and warm with me which is good. They're great. We had Thanksgiving dinner there, it was nice. They have activities, they have all kinds of stuff like that. My husband doesn't participate too much because he is in the very deep stages of Alzheimer's, and they're very accommodating to him. They try very hard to get him interacting, but he's just not there and that's not good. They do have an outdoor area. They have assisted living, a mild dementia unit, and they have a memory care unit. I've only been to the memory unit. Looking at it outside, it's a beautiful facility, his part is nice, so I'm assuming the rest of it is well. He has a studio apartment, it does not have a kitchen, which he doesn't need. He has a bed and two chairs, it has ample closet space and an ample bathroom.

We went to HarborChase of South Portland. It's very fancy, it's like living in a four-star hotel. The rooms were extremely small. I didn't meet much staff, but everyone I met was just very helpful. They have a lot of amenities and they have a lot of activities. They say that the rooms are small because they want people to be out of their rooms, but that doesn't make sense because it's assisted living where people have problems being out and about. So it seems a little strange. I have a friend who just moved there two days ago, and the feedback from her is that the food is very good. They do have some exercise equipment, but it was mostly things that people get up on, like a bike. If you're in assisted living and you have mobility problems, that's not going to work, but they have other facilities, so they must know what they're doing. It's very expensive. It's the room size that's an absolute turn-off.
