I went to visit my grandmother , who was recently addmitted. I ask her if she was ready you take a nap .she explained to me that she could not .because if she called them to put her in the bed she couldn't get back in her chair till tomorrw.whe I asked why she said they will only pick me up twice a day , one to get in her chair and then again to put her back in bed at night. I think this is really sad when a 95 year old lady can't take a nap unless she does it all slouched in a wheel chair. I'm very disappointed to learn this. While walking to my grandmother's room their were people everywhere in wheel chairs .crying , moaning ect. Some just needing someone to talk to .It was if I were walking in to an asylum rather than a nursing home. There are quite a few other things , but just know my heart is broken from what I seen today

Wynhoven sometimes is good and sometimes not. They lack communication between people that worked there, the residents or the families of the residents. Mom's happiness my priority, so when I show up there and she is not happy because one of the aides didn’t treat her right, then I am not happy. When we asked questions it’s like you are going to go to four or five people to figure out what’s going on. There should be a contact person that I should be able to contact at any moment that can give me information about my mom although we did have a meeting to resolve this. Mom lost her socks and nobody could tell me where her socks were. If the people were new, they should pay more attention to take care of these stuff.

We went to Wynhoven Living Center. That's the only one I've checked out so far. I believe there's a waiting list, but I am not sure. They said they would call if there will be an opening. The staff seemed nice, the apartments were pretty nice, and there are a lot of elderly people like my mother. They pretty much have their own apartments. It's a one bedroom with a small kitchen and a bathroom. There are always shuttle boxes that take them to the stores or to doctor's appointments. They have a little area where they play Bingo. They take only thirty percent of your income, and it's pretty appealing to me.

All in all, our family's experience with Wynhoven in Marrero, LA was a positive one. We made sure that a family member went everday and it was always very clean and smelled clean, my grandmother was always clean and dressed and she never really complained. They went to the cafeteria everyday for their meals and it was always clean and orderly. The residents seemed cheerful and friendly and the staff couldn't have been more pleasant. It was run by the Archdiocese of New Orleans so there was mass every morning. There was always an activity arranged everyday whether it was bingo, bake sales or someone would come in and play the piano and sing. The residents seemed to enjoy it. Our overall experience was an extremely pleasant and satisfying one.

My grandmother was at Wynhoven Living Center for about 4 months. I used to visit her once a week before her passing. The facility is quite small about a block away from West Jefferson Hospital. The care there in my opinion was average except that my grandmother had a very nice, caring nurse that popped in 2-3 times while I visited. However, the overall care is not that impressive. Because of the lack of staff, patients are put in wheelchairs and parked around the nurses' station just siting there most of the day. Every time I came to visit I would have to see these people just staring off into space it would seem like. Although some did interact with you and had a smile on their face just to see someone walk through the door to talk to. Overall, the center was average because I felt they only gave enough care to treat the patients but there was hardly any activities or socializing for them to interact with.
