My mother is a resident of Sunrise of Leawood, which is a beautiful community. It's very nice. The staff seems very positive, and they have a lot of activities, field trips, sing-alongs, and group activities. The food seems to be good. It's pretty expensive, but it's worth it.

Everyone at Sunrise of Leawood was very friendly and welcoming. The facility was very clean. All the residents looked well taken care of. I loved how they had the front and back porch with rocking chairs. I also loved the little different nooks where residents could sit privately and read, or watch TV. I only saw one apartment at the time, because that was the only one empty, and I would not have chosen that one. It was too small and outdated. Michelle was excellent. She answered all my questions and was very helpful, and proactive and she has checked on me since my tour.

Fine as long as your family member is healthy but medical care severely lacking. By the time my parent was taken to hospital an untreated UTI had degraded into sepsis, borderline acute kidney failure, severe bladder infection, and blood sugar above 500. Staff is spread to thin to provide medical oversight even in highest cost care level

The people at Sunrise of Leawood were lovely to work with. They were very informative about things. They wanted to give the impression that they wanted to help even though I don't think our available money will allow my sister to live there. It had been freshly redecorated and remodeled. They're still in the process of putting new furniture in. It was bright with white halls and cheery colors. It had an inviting aesthetic. The people that I saw in the dining room and the halls were being greeted by name and usually a little bit of conversation. That's the stuff you look for when you want your family member to be known and not just a number. It was impressive. Michelle was my tour guide, and she'd been there for maybe nine years. For somebody that had stayed in that business, I think, is showing a lot of passion for that population. I was impressed with her length of tenure. And then I met some of the other staff members who also had been there a long time. And they all were cheerful and seemed happy with their jobs. It was just a very good overall impression. My sister would be lucky to be able to live there. The rooms had kind of an interesting design, probably showing the 18 years. Some of them were designed to be shared rooms and they were not as desirable. And they can go for a single room but its layout was a little funky. But it was a good, healthy, and happy-looking environment.

Sunrise of Leawood is a very nice facility. They have very nice people. It would be a very nice location for assisted living. The only downside to it was the way the parking was laid out. The parking lot is in the back of the building. They do have a parking garage on the bottom of the building that you would use and come up that way instead of using the front door. It's a little odd, the way it's set up. But as far as the building itself, once you get inside, it's very secure and very nice. It's clean. They do have MDs that come around. So, it's not just nursing. In the apartments, depending on which one you get, you get a little a small fridge, a sink, walk-in showers, and pull chords for emergencies. They do supply an emergency alert bracelet or necklace, and it works onsite. I was very happy with the building. It's clean and updated, and it's been kept up very well. The only issue we had with it was the parking. The staff who gave me the tour was very pleasant and very knowledgeable. She's been with the company for multiple years, it was very educational. They gave us some oatmeal cookies. They are located in a business neighborhood and have a gated garden walking area in the back. They are set up on a Y-pattern.

Sunrise of Leawood was excellent in every way. The staff showed us several one-bedrooms, and they were ample. It was very well-managed. They had some really great and caring staff. We somewhat interacted accidentally with residents coming through the hall, and they all seemed very happy they were there. It was a very broad spectrum of everything that could be expected, as far as care and getting people to be the best they can be.

The tour I had of Sunrise of Leawood was very positive and very encouraging. I liked the fact that you felt like you were in a home with the hallways. They had comfortable sitting areas, so you didn't feel like you just had a long hallway of apartments. They had multiple common areas. We were very comfortable with the fact that they would be able to take care of my mother's needs. They were very reassuring with what their capabilities were and showed us various apartments. I think the best way to describe it was just comfortable. You didn't feel like it was an institution. You felt like it was a comfortable place to be, not someplace that you were forced into. They had kind of a patio, but because they have memory care, things are more restricted. They were working hard trying to help ensure that the memory group did not wander off. The facility looked very good. They had an exercise area, a television area, an entertainment area, and we saw a piano for entertainment that they bring in and things along those lines, but they did not have the big entertainment facilities that you see at some of the others.

Our parent was rushed to the St. Luke's Hospital ER late one night (not by Sunrise but by a visiting relative) as she was too weak to stand or sit up. She nearly died due to dehydration and over-medication. She spent over a week in hospital critical care followed by weeks in rehab to recover and learn how to walk and function again. 24-hour personal nursing (which we had to pay for at about $500 every full day) was a necessity due to her being such a fall risk then. Sunrise nursing falsely told hospital there was a DNR in place when there was NOT. She was in such bad shape when she arrived that they didn't think she'd survive and the on-charge physician asked me if a DNR was definitely in place as Sunrise insisted. When I informed him this was NEVER the case, he became disturbed at being misinformed. There was also a large theft that occurred while she lived there which we reported to the police when the head nurse said she would attend to the matter, but did not. We moved our parent to a better facility and things have been so much better, I'm happy to say. I shudder when I think how close we came to losing her.

Sunrise of Leawood was good. They had a very good memory care director and were very eager to set up an individual care plan. They had the most phenomenal activities director of any place I went to. He was totally engaged with the residents. The room was very nice. It had a nice window view. If you're sitting in a wheelchair, you can see out. The director was good. The building itself was nice.

Do not place your loved one in this facility. My parent started out in Assisted Living and had to move to Memory Care. That is when things started to go wrong. They don't have enough care staff workers, and the ones that are there don't pay close enough attention to the residents. My parent has fallen several times in front of staff and they have all kinds of excuses to why and how it happened. There is not enough activities for the residents to do and hitting a balloon back and forth across the room is not an activity. There are quite a few residents that wander the halls aimlessly. The rooms are spacious, & the food is just ok. Most of the problems stemmed from no one keeping a watchful eye on my parent, and making sure they were clean and went to the bathroom on a regular basis. You can meet with them time after time to discuss concerns and issues, and it might be fine for a little while, but it doesn't take long for things to go wrong again. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere, you will save yourself and loved one a lot of pain. I gave it two stars because the outer and inner appearances of the facility do look nice but don't let that fool you.
Proceed with caution

My mother's health deteriorated terribly at sunrise. I eventually had to take her to the hospital and after staying for over a week, I transferred her to a place where the care is amazing. My mom is finally back when I thought she was coming to the end of her lifeat sunrise. There are some good care managers at sunrise but the woman who oversees them is very rude and unwilling to accept feedback. They are clearly short staffed and very profit driven. Proceed with caution especially if your loved one is in a wheelchair.

Sunrise of Leawood was excellent. I very much liked it. The staff was extremely friendly, informative, answered all my questions, and gave a very good tour. The only thing I didn't like was there's no door between the bedroom and the rest of the apartment. I would like to have a bedroom with a door to close everything off. It also looked like it was in a very nice neighborhood. Lunch was very nice, and the chef sat with us and told us that he would prepare whatever we want.

I visited Sunrise of Leawood. I thought they had a couple of pets that lived there -- a dog and a cat. It was nice. It also had kind of a very strong potpourri smell which to me was not a good thing. It was warm and homey. They were very friendly. The people that worked there were very nice.

The tour at Sunrise of Leawood is good. It is a beautiful location, but to me, it has a bit more of an institutional feel. Also it is in more of an office park area, so it doesn't feel quite as homey. The grounds are very minimal too. It is mainly just a building. The amenities are good. They're standard to anything else like tours, musicians coming in, and transportation available.

My mother-in-law is in Sunrise of Leawood. It's adequate. For what we had to work with and price, it's good. I've had some communication issues with their nursing staff. Sometimes it's good, and sometimes it's bad. The CNAs seem to be doing really well, but some of the actual nursing staff could use some help.

My husband is in Sunrise. So far, it is a very nice home with very nice people who take good care of him. Their rooms are nice and roomy, but you have to decorate them yourself. I’ve tried their food, and it’s very good. The dining room is very nice. The waitresses come out, wait on you, collect your menus after you have marked them, and then bring your food out to you. They go out to lunch and walks, and have music and craft rooms. My husband does go out on walks. One of the caregivers took him down and played a couple of games of pool with him. They have pool tables and religious services.

I would have to say that my Fathers care in the lower level assisted living area was 5 star, except for the decline in quality of food. Once he had to move to the Memory care unit the care was severely lacking. There were some great staff members, but others there just to do their job and inattentive to residents needs. Food was an issue often served cold and had such poor nutrition my father ate 100% of meals but couldn't gain weight. Staff were slow to respond to call signals usually 20 min or more or had to go hunt them down. Was told they would get 24 hour nursing when first moved him in and that didn't happen. Evening/night staff the worst. With no nurse to keep them on their toes and supposed lead care aid who didn't take charge, it was lacking any control. Staff frequently just parking everyone in the TV area after dinner for hours calling it a movie night activity.. Staff would then sit around chatting with each other. Addressed concerns with upper management but their lack of supervision and addressing care issues had us decide to move our father out of the facility.

Sunrise of Leawood was very inviting and clean. The staff was very friendly and seemed experience in the care that was given. The rooms were very nice and plenty. They seemed to have plenty of activities and the people that were living there seemed to be very active. Some of the people were coming from outings, they had board games, there were able to go outside in the fresh air, reading room, activity room, things to keep their minds active. The dining area seemed pleasant.

My mom is at Sunrise of Leawood. We chose it because it is close to my office, and it is right off the highway, so it is fairly close to my home as well. Also I was impressed with the cleanliness of it. It has a very homey feel about it. It feels like a home not like a nursing home. I know my mom is very happy with the food. I think the staff that they have there who deal one-on-one with the residents are fantastic. My mom has a one-bedroom apartment with a family room, a bathroom, and a bedroom. They have a vast array of activities. They have live music, cocktail hour, different sports events, get-togethers, movies of the week, news program, church activities, arts and crafts, and field trips.

Sunrise of Leawood was bigger and nicely furnished. It was a very nice place with nice people. It was in a very nice neighborhood and it had nice grounds. However, for my husband's particular care, I don't think he had enough attention there because it was assisted living. I thought the other residents there were happy, but he is not. They don't have enough access outside than they do where he is now. It was not as secured; he jumped the fence there. However, I don't think they need to improve on anything. I thought it was more of my husband's doing than theirs and would recommend them to others.

Sunrise services were wonderful. Probably they could improve on their food, but it might just had been mom like her appetite was not used to be. But otherwise, everything else they did was great.

The facility itself is very nice, nice furnishings and is always kept clean. It also smells nice. The residents seems to be in a good mood for the most part. The staff does a pretty good job of attending to the residents, but some of the nurses are incompetent when actually having to care for a patient in need.
