Our overall experience with Five Star Residences of Fort Wayne has been excellent. We chose to move Mom there, because this was in an area that she was already familiar with, and there were a couple of people there that she already knew. So, that was beneficial. Her living arrangement is a one-bedroom apartment inside of a building, so it's very nice. There's plenty of private living space and storage. It has a very small kitchenette area with a refrigerator and a microwave, which is already enough since it's a full dining service. The location of the dining room and the sites where entertainment happens are very convenient. They have a garden club, a nice movie room, a calendar full of activities that includes card playing and entertainers that come in, like local musicians. They have a lot going on and they have a shuttle that takes them to a few stores weekly if you choose to. She seems to like the food, too.

My mother has moved into Five Star Residences of Fort Wayne. She's completely independent. There are one to two-bedroom apartments, and they have very small yards in them. There are different cul de sacs around the apartment complexes. It's really like a duplex. Everything's on one floor. There are two houses to a building or two apartments to a building. She likes it. It's nice. The food is good, and you can eat in the main building. The main building houses the higher levels of care people. There's a dining room, there's a movie room, and there are activities scheduled. She doesn't participate in any of those, but she does sometimes carry the food back to her apartment. She likes the community. She likes the people. She feels that they do not do what they say they're going to do as far as maintenance, though. You have to wait a long time to get the maintenance that you want on your apartment. The nurses might be fantastic, but the administration is not so great. It's just average. There was one other in this area that was a nearby drive to me that had independent living, but mom wanted somewhere where she could have a bathtub. This was the only one that would let her have a bathtub.

Five Star Residences of Fort Wayne is an older community. I've never heard anything bad about it. I saw some of their independent living apartments, and they were very nice. Once someone moves out, they redecorate them and clean them all up. I asked them about their toilet stools. Are you going to change the stools? She said, "Well, we hadn't thought about it ." I said, I think that would be a good idea. I said I have an awful time getting up from one of those. I said, "Something higher. It doesn't have to have a raised seat. Something would be nice. You might want to think about that." She said, "Oh, we will." Their prices were very good. The upkeep is for the most top quality.

Five Star Residences of Fort Wayne independent living was very nice and I enjoyed staying there, but it's way too expensive for the average person. I just couldn't afford them. They have a group that meets once a month and they're the ones who choose the activities. We would get together maybe once or twice a month to go out for supper or lunch. They basically keep you fairly occupied. They took very good care of the place and the villas were very nice and kept up. The staff was very nice. They weren't stingy with their food portions though.

We visited Covington Commons. It was fine, the people were extremely friendly, but my mom is not ready yet. They have garden homes, there were duplexes, each one had a garage, with two units attached to either a 1- or a 2-bedroom. The price varied on how renovated it was, some units were renovated, and others were a little bit older. There werent any activities at that time, the independent living has activities on their own, but they can also participate in any of the assisted living activities as well. They have a lot of different activities, like the bus that they run on a regular basis to different places once a week. The advantage is you can walk over and get a meal if you want, and it's very social because everybody is around you. The staff as well as the residents were friendly. They have a library with computers for residents to use, a community room, a kitchen, and stuff that you can use, board games, and bingo, and they have a theater and a big screen TV. They have an onsite physical therapy, class, and they have church services.

This is a well run ALF with a good staff, good food (despite my mom always saying her cooking is better), nice activities and great services for their higher need residents (my mom is one). My mom and her husband have been at CC coming up on almost a year now. With the care, routine, attention, nutrition and socialization she is doing much much better. The CNA's work very hard to take care of their residents, and it's not an easy job. In my experiences, they have been patient, sweet and contientious in their work. I know it's a stressful job dealing with lots of different personalities, needs, demands and even sometimes that resident who just doesn't wanna be there. Luckily, my mom doesn't sing she wants to go home all the time now (that I am aware of). The nursing staff is busy but responsive. Patient, kind and attentive to the residents as well as their staff. It's a hard job, and they do it well. I am happy to have their experience on board. It's a relief knowing my mom is in better hands than trying to live at home and failing. There are a variety of good activities, but residents do have to decide to participate. They have some great music, outings, exercise, crafts, a dog visitor and yep... BINGO. Overall, a well run place and I've been pleased at their patience and support of my mom. I would not hesitate to recommend this facility to anyone making the difficut decision that their parent can't live at home safely any longer.

I really liked this place and I'd definitely consider it. But it is not on right side of town for me. staff were nice and knowledgeable.

Covington Commons was newer; everything was very clean and very kept up. All the residents appeared clean; a lot of them kept the doors to their rooms open which seemed very inviting like they interacted with each other. It’s so nice to see them being able to bring some of their cherished stuff with them and put their own pictures on the walls. There were several residents in a community room who were having group discussions about different topics. The rooms seemed very nice, more personalized, and the apartments reminded me of hotel rooms. The dining rooms are very nice; they look like restaurants.
