My mother is at Heritage Manor-Normal, which is where she was before and we decided to return there. She has been to the hospital a couple of times but has returned to the skilled care facility. Based on my experience, my feelings toward them is pretty neutral. It's all pretty good. The food is good. The staff tries to be helpful. They are a bit understaffed, but I think that's pretty standard for most places like that. The facility is nice. Sometimes it's a little hard to get someone to call you back with medical information. Other than that, they're probably better than most. They have lounges, an outdoor patio area for when the weather is nice, the residents can go out, they offer shuttle services, and they've taken my mother to and from doctor appointments. They have an exercise room. It's a therapy facility, so they do a lot of rehab. I am only there in the evenings. She's not been able to get out of her room and participate in activities, and with Covid, they've scaled them back, but in the past when she was there, they had bingo, ice cream socials, and things like that. They have some things going on for the enjoyment of their residents.

The basic care is ok. Staff change like a revolving door, even supervisors. They have a lot of agency staff who come and go daily. My parent was in here and we had a horrible time with communication. We never got anyone on the phone, always voice mail. rarely get a call back. I even called the corporate office, got an immediate call from the facility, a promise to have someone call me back, then nothing. We asked for a compassionate visit, they said my parent was not bad enough, they died that next night, alone. This is not an emotional response, it is based on two years and we were in the facility daily.

My tour with Heritage Manor was wonderful. The receptionist was friendly, and the person who gave me a tour was very nice. Every time I called them to discuss things they were nice. I loved the layout. The decor was very nice. Their memory ward facility looked like they had lots of activities for the residents to do. The rooms were very nice. There were double and private rooms. They were very spacious and nice. The residents could decorate them up like they wanted to. Heritage Manor would definitely be one that I wanted to go back to.

I volunteered in the Alzheimer's wing of this facility for approximately one year. I was incredibly impressed with the care, compassion, and professionalism displayed by almost everyone I interacted with. Not only did the nurses seem to know the names of every resident in the whole facility, but the janitors and other staff seemed to as well. I spent my time there providing social companionship to the residents so I was able to get a first-hand look at their emotional well-being and state of mind. Despite the incredibly difficult mental and physical challenges, all of the residents seemed comfortable, well-adjusted, and content. And, furthermore, whenever a resident was upset about something, however big or small, there was always someone on hand to devote their full attention to the problem. The environment is warm and inviting and the planned activities are stimulating without being patronizing. One word to the wise for those who might be considering the facility for a loved-one --- many of the activities and events are based in the Christian faith. So, as I can remember from one Jewish resident named Sam, that can cause a feeling of disassociation for those of different faiths. All things considered though, Heritage Manor is a place that I would feel blessed to spend my elder years.
