My mother has been at Smyrna Village for about a week now. First of all, I like that it's pretty quiet. The staff is nice. They took control of getting the application processed and the switching of the doctor. They did a very good job of doing that for me. She's in a private room there. Another thing I found that's pretty cool is they supply the toiletries and stuff like that, and I thought that was a nice touch. The staff is very helpful and the communication is pretty good. They always answer the phone and they go through the process of actually helping you. I had Thanksgiving dinner with them. They have a cook at the location, which I thought was good. So, the food was hot. They have a nice active common area. The residents are interacting in the common area.

The administrator at Smyrna Village was wonderful. She was very thorough. They had some activities. The place smelled of urine, so I definitely will not be going there. It looked like they'd been under construction for a while. It was not spacious. It was like an older facility. I didn't like the feel of it because of the odor, and I couldn't get past that.

Mom moved to Smyrna Village. She is in the memory care. I knew they were under a new management system, but when I first went there, I was amazingly impressed with Germain and his staff and how they were handling things and how they had changed that care facility into trying to make it better for the residents. He walked me through step by step as to what to expect, how things were going to go, and what they were going to do as far as caring for my mom, and through my searches, I felt very comfortable with them. I think I made the absolute correct choice in choosing the Smyrna Village. My mom has full-blown dementia so she's not eating, but she wasn't eating at her last facility either. So that's nothing new, but they got her on supplements and proteins and things that help make sure that she gets through.

Smyrna Village should be shut down. It should be reported to the health department and it should be shut down. I didn't even know places like that existed, but I was horrified. It was filthy. There was no outdoor space at all, no greenspace anywhere. There were maybe 4 to 5 parking spaces in the whole place. The residents looked pitiful. They did not look well cared for. What they were charging for what they offered there was insane. What they were even calling a bathroom and a shower, to share with another person, would not even be okay. They had more than one floor and to where the bottom floor was like a basement. And they had these people locked in, and they could never leave. A little, tiny living room, and few rooms that were down there. That is it. And because they were not mobile enough, they could never leave the basement, and it was like a basement. Then they had another level that I don't even know how it could pass the State regulations because you had several steps, maybe four or five steps that you had to go up to even get to that floor. So, I don't know how the people were getting up there.

My wife moved into Smyrna Village more than a month ago. I've been very pleased with the accommodations and the staff. They are very friendly people. The owner even reached out to me and said if I had any concerns, to please give her a call. My wife is in a shared room right now, but they do have private rooms available. They have mostly board games and other activities. They have an activity area, but they don't have any gardens.

My father-in-law is in here and so far, we like it. The cleanliness is fine. The staff seem to be friendly and knowledgeable. He seems to like the food. They have people upstairs and downstairs, with more activities for the people upstairs.

It was a little farther away from my house. It was a nice place, but it wasn’t a good fit for my dad. He is not to the point that he needs as much as they provide. If I felt like someone I knew that it was the type of place they were looking for, I would recommend it. I felt like the staff was kind, and it would be a safe place.
