I am a friend or relative of a resident

The best place that I found for Dad was Unihealth Post-Acute Care. It was the best in this area. The person who took care of him during the day really cared for him. She was so nice. The rehab program is really nice. They are not trained to assess. They're trained for custodial care, and people in rehab are trained for rehab. In the wing we were in, they treat them with respect. There is one wing where people are much more impaired as far as getting around, and they wheel those people 2 or 3 times a day for activities. They're really good with that and feeding them. They did a real bath once a week. They had a shower facility, and they would line them up and get them in and get them out, and everybody just loved having a bath, and they had a place where they had their hair done, and the men could get their haircut and shave. They had bingo. They had church services on Sunday that you could go to. They have a movie day. They have something in the morning and something in the afternoon. When they have those little activities, they'll throw them a little something to eat and something to drink while they're doing it. They wheeled him out for that a couple of times. He got to go to the dining room most of the time, but now on the weekend, it's a different story. I'll find him in his bed with a tray over the bed and the head of the bed not up, so he is semi-laying down trying to eat, not nice. So I learned to stay there on weekends, and I learned to stay there for the evening meal every single night because after the evening meal, they are supposed to put them to bed. That's when there's no care because everybody is involved in posting what everyone ate and putting the trays back up. Every single person, including the nursing staff, is in there doing that, and that's when the lights don't get answered. That was the witching hour for me. I had to be there to take care of him at that point. My suggestion there is that they not take everybody off the floor right after supper and have no one there to answer the lights, and instead have one person to answer lights on four halls. I went to see the head of nursing and said Dad was supposed to get his medicine every 2 hours. He should have somebody there to give it to him. He did get his medicine after that. They were very, very kind to me and to him. They would try to keep the same people so he would know who they were. They did a real good job on making sure he wasn't agitated. The nursing home was much more attentive than a hospital.
