I went to Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation and looked at the memory unit. It's not the kind of place I want to put my wife in. It's all semi-private rooms with two beds in them. The maintenance was OK, but not as nice as the others. The staff during the tour was very nice, very concerned, and very knowledgeable. The outdoor spaces were very nice and protected so that people couldn't wander off. Each room looked like a hospital room and it was just depressing.

Find another place for your loved one! Upper management here is a nightmare. Too many issues w/no resolution. Poor communication among staff. Food TERRIBLE!!

Need to focus more on the residents and care rather than petty issues. Residents come last In this facility

My Dad was a recent resident at Harbor Healthcare. I highly recommend it. The staff is amazing- they love their jobs and it shows. Some of the staff have been there for over 10 years! The nurses, the CNA's and the supervisors show compassion, dedication, professionalism and a bit of humor. They share this with the residents and their families. They spend time answering questions and are very thorough and knowledgeable. When my Dad was in his last days and the staff made us feel secure in knowing that he was cared for and important to them. All of the people were wonderful but two were exceptional- Loretta and Lora. They stopped by often to make sure he was doing ok and that we were also ok. They made sure we had coffee and offered food and snacks. All of the staff gave us privacy but also offered comfort and support to my Dad and to our family. I cannot express my full appreciation for these gestures as it made a very difficult time possible. The facility is on beautiful grounds in a residential neighborhood. The rooms are spacious and everything is kept clean. The facility is not new and maybe could use a coat of new paint but not at the expense of losing these amazing people. Thank you!

My husband is a Vietnam veteran who has Parkinson's disease due to exposure from Agent Orange. He has been a resident at Harbor Healthcare for over a year. He has been in 3 other facilities. None of them came anywhere close to the care he gets at Harbor. My husband is clean, his room is clean, the facility is clean (doesn't have that nursing home "smell") and the food is good. He is in the dementia unit. The care he receives here by the nurses and aids is excellent! It takes a special type of person to work in this unit. The nurses and aids LOVE their patients. They form relationships with the residents. I feel like we are a family. This is a job I would not be able to do myself. Andrew Byrd, the administrator for Harbor, is a real advocate for Veterans. The VA is closing its facilities because the Korean & Vietnam vets are dying off and they don't need as many as they have before.. The VA is contracting with outside facilities to care for Vets now. I believe we have been very fortunate to land at Harbor Healthcare. Everyone here is very friendly and takes pride in their work. The maintenance staff, laundry, housekeeping, food service and the activities staff do everything they can to make the residents feel at home. They treat the residents with dignity. I just cannot say enough good things about Harbor Healthcare. I live in Wilmington, DE and make the commute to Lewes, DE several times a week. I have been asked why I don't move my husband closer to "home". I reply that I don't think there is any other place where I would feel as comfortable as I do having him at Harbor. And he is safe there.

My Dad was at this facility for about 5 weeks. He was on the dementia unit which can be a very sad place. I was impressed at the quality of care he received from Beth the Head Nurse and Rebecca and Izzy the Nurse's Aides. Everyone seemed to be genuinely concerned about his well being. Although the physical building is older the care that your loved one will receive is very good.

My dad is in Harbor Healthcare. It is a very nice place. I'm very impressed with it as a nursing home. It is very clean and quiet. They seem to have even more activities than the other assisted living facility for the patients. They play a couple of different types of bingo, and they play cards. I visited my dad everyday, and I'm just amazed at how many different activities they have going on for the patients. Also my dad is very happy with the food. The community, the nursing staff, and the CNAs are very good with him. The rooms are very nice too. The room he is in right now is, he is by himself, but it is a shared room. It is nice and clean, and there's a bathroom in the room. They have a separate shower. They go down to another room where they take showers.

My mother hurt her knee went to the ER at Beebe, and they transferred her to Harbor Health. My mother suffers from dementia and requires of coaxes to do her PT. Obviously she didn't do her PT and now is in a wheel chair. She is now not toileting herself which she did before she entered Harbor Health. My dad is also elderly and can't life her nor give her the care she needs.. I talked to the nurses and administrators when I visited her and thought the outcome would be better. I think she was released because the knee seemed better but her balance, etc. still was lacking and probably should not have been discharged. My mom is now back in the hospital with the flu. I am hoping the other facility has room for her because she did not do well here.

The building itself was great. It had plenty of space and was as much like home as you would want. It had two separate sides for two different types of patients. Short-term and Long-term. It had a gym and private shower times. It was very quiet. No smoking on the premises which is always good. It didnt seem to be in need of staffing. There were plenty of people to go around. BUt, on the other hand. the inteligence of the staff was less then what you would want for your loved one. In my Father's case, there should have been better assesment and more one on one time to get to know him and understand him and the "signs" that his condition was worsening. Also, there was a mishap with his medications and they actually were lost for a few days. This did directly cause his condition to get worse over the few day period. My Father also passed away in this facility, and dispite the blame i may want to put on Harbor Health. I do believe it could have been medically avoided or atleast not when it happened.
