I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom is happy at the moment at Cogir of San Rafael Memory Care. They have a new director, and I'm fairly confident that this will be good. They went through two directors in a couple of months and that was hard. We went there a year and a half ago, so my mom has been there for a while now. The appearance of the food was very beautiful. It's tasty, and it meets all the nutritional needs. We had beautiful Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving meals there. But their daily meals are also well-rounded and delicious. When you first come in, there's a beautiful foyer. You're greeted at the front desk by a very nice gentleman who has a lovely British accent that makes you feel kind of relaxed. It's very clean, open and spacious. It smells good. There are usually 2 or 3 residents sitting around reading the newspaper or having conversations. They have three different areas that they use for the activities. They have a small TV room for morning coffee, and they also do their televised church services there, which is really great. Upstairs, they have an activity room that they also use in the evening for watching movies, and they do all their exercises in there. And then they use their dining room for larger things like different musicians come in at least three times a week. There's a guy that comes in twice a month to do Tai Chi, and there is a person that comes in twice a month that does a gardening thing with them called Elder Grow. That's just amazing to see the seniors with their hands in the soil and connecting with plants. It's just powerful. On top of that, they have a morning sitting exercise every day. There's a lovely park around the corner where they can walk in a sort of circle. They take everybody out whether they're in wheelchairs or walkers or walking, and they get them out and moving every single day. They're great activities. They're well-rounded activities. I felt that we were paying less than some of the other places that I had talked to. I thought it was great value for our money. My mother has a junior bedroom, so she has like a living space and then an actual bedroom. It's really nice because she went from being in her own apartment to having this space. In the interim, we had been in a small facility up in Healdsburg, and she said it felt like being in a hotel, and now she says she feels like she has a home. The staff is amazing. They're very attentive. They make sure my mom is up every morning and dressed in clothes that match. They helped my mom pick out clothes and do her hair. And then they make sure everybody gets to all the meals and let her know when all the activities are there. Sometimes my mom just wants to read her newspaper in the morning, and they let her be. I think one of the best things I like about Cogir is their new communication method. They use something called the LifeLoop, which is an app. It lets me know what activities my mother has attended, and what activities are being offered. Cogir was the only one that just had memory care, and that appealed to me because the staff was more trained, and it didn't feel like they were locking away the memory care people.

The Cogir of San Rafael Memory Care is an exceptional memory care facility. They seem to know what they're doing. They only deal with memory care so they're not a split facility where a part of it is one thing and the other part is another. They're strictly just memory care so their focus is on each of the residents there. The rooms are very nice and they come with a little kitchenette. They have lots of activities, and they seem to be keeping all of the residents busy. They seem to have something going on all the time. I was there for an hour and they had a whole bunch of different activities that they were engaging the residents in. They have a library, a beauty parlor, and a TV room. They have an outdoor area, a bistro area, and, of course, dining facilities.

We liked the way Cogir of San Rafael looked. It's a renovated hotel, so it doesn't have a clinical feel when you walk into it. It feels homey. They've also got really friendly staff. They're very good with the residents and I've been there five times now. They're very attentive to the residents and they all looked well cared for. Looked like they have really good staffing ratios and good food. They still have a lot of remodeling to finish though, but they have plans for that.

I visited this facility

It was a nice place, but it was geared toward dementia. It was a different environment than what we were looking for because it was sort of locked down and it had a much different feeling. The place was lovely, the staff was lovely, everything was nice, but it was not the right fit for what we were looking for. I saw the list of activities, but I didn't see anyone doing any activities. It didn't look like an active community. The lady that was supposed to give us the tour wasn't there and because of that, it wasn't as comprehensive as we had anticipated.

My mother lives here. It's a nice place. The community seems fine. The apartments are nice and have their own refrigerator. They cook meals for them and have a big dining hall. They take them for rides out to lunch sometimes, and have movies, exercise, and crafts.

It is a very nice facility. It has more assisted living options. They have memory care there too. It is a very nice facility that is a little smaller. But overall I think it is a good design for seniors. The staff was very nice and very accommodating. It is nice, clean, and well decorated. They seem to have a large number of staff available to look after the residents.

I visited this facility

It was pleasant, but it just didn’t have the same welcoming feeling that we experienced. It was larger; they had more in their community. I probably would recommend the facility.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

This high-quality assisted living facility provided care for my best friend's uncle for many years. He suffered from dementia and was extremely demanding and they met all his needs. He even fell in love with a fellow resident and they accommodated that relationship, taking the two of them on "dates." I have known several friends who've had family members at this facility and everyone speaks so highly of it.

This is a huge complex--close to 300 residents--in a good area of San Rafael that offers assisted living only. I know it well through clients I've referred there. It's located in a commercial neighborhood, close to Northgate Mall, and there are lots of other shops nearby. Parking is great, and it's close to a freeway, but it's not accessible to public transportation. It's a beautiful place. Lots of green, flowers, beautiful grounds. It has the feel of a big B&B, with a little upscale cafeteria for breakfast and lunch--and always lots of treats available: cookies, brownies, lemonade, tea. It's also very clean and feels homelike even though it's large. The staff is wonderful: positive, high energy, professional, welcoming. They have case management, physical therapists, occupational therapists, all well trained. And the activities are excellent. There's a gym for workouts, a yoga class, a stretch class, lots more. And they have a weekly menu for food that's served restaurant style. The food is very good.
