I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My sister has only been at Vista Del Mar Senior Living for a couple of days. She's in the assisted living part. They also have an upstairs, which is another area that's memory care. Overall, I think they're doing the best they can do since she's a difficult person. The place is beautiful. It's wide open, and the rooms are huge. Each room has either a balcony or a little patio. They have a huge outside courtyard with green space that has covered areas as well as a barbecue. It has a nice dining room, good food choices, and lots of activities. I've only seen it during the tour and a couple of times after that, but so far I'm extremely impressed with it. I would recommend it to anybody right now. They have an entire list of activities. They do the typical bingo, and take seniors in their van out to a store to do some shopping. I think you have to pay a few dollars for each mile and they will transport you to a doctor's visit too. They don't stay with you, but they will transport and pick you up again. If you're in a wheelchair, they'll take you and then your family can meet you at the doctor's appointment. They have prom night, Spirit week, and just tons of different activities and things to get the residents involved and interact. They have a big activity room where they can do big activities like morning movies. They have a library and a TV room on the second floor, both of which the residents can go in themselves and turn on the TV or put in a DVD and watch what they want. It's very accommodating to the residents being able to do what they want. I was there on 3 different days during the day when they had a lot of activities going on. I was also there this morning and they have an activity board for the residents so it looks like they offer different things pretty much every few hours so the residents have a lot to keep them busy rather than just sitting around. The list I saw of what activities they offer seemed more than adequate for choice. I did not eat there, but I did talk to a couple of the residents who were eating the regular meal of the day. What's really nice is they have a kind of pre-planned menu for regular eaters, and then they have a diabetic menu if the person's a diabetic. Also, when the resident gets down to the dining room and doesn't like what's on the menu that day, they have a whole list of things that are available to be made at that time. You don't have to look at the menu the day before and notify the kitchen 6 hours ahead of the meal. You can just look at the menu when you get there and say if you'd rather have a turkey sandwich or a tuna melt, for example. The food seems delicious, very nutritious, not altered, and with lots of choices. They always have things like hamburgers, hotdogs, and French fries for those people who want them. The other day, when my sister was there for the first time, she wasn't interested in the food. She's a very picky eater so I asked if they could just get her a bowl of fresh fruit instead and the lady there went and brought her back a bowl of grapes and watermelon. I would say they are extremely adaptable to food choices. The dining area is also beautiful and looks like a restaurant with regular restaurant servers. They have an area towards the back of the big dining room they call the feeder area. They have a person stationed there to help people who need assistance like my sister who has arthritis. That person helps cut the meat or chop the food up so it's easier to eat. If they are disabled they have a staff that will feed the person. The nice thing is the person's up and dressed and down there with other people who are being fed as opposed to being kept in the room and brought a tray. I think that's nice. They do have tray service, and I think it's $5 a tray. If for some reason you can't get out of bed or don't want to get out of bed then you can have that. The staff has been nothing but friendly and goes out of their way. Their tour director is just godsent, as far as showing us everything and telling us the truth. She walks through the halls and knows just about everybody by name, and the place is huge. I'm not sure how many people it fits, but it probably takes up half a city block. Everybody has smiles on their faces, including most of the residents, which is nice. Everybody walks by, you smile and they smile or they say hello. The staff has been nothing but responsive to anything I've needed, including their maintenance guys. They helped my sister move a bedside table that's extremely heavy. They got it out of her car for her, put it on a dolly, and brought it up to the room. The first day she was there, they also helped me move her bed so that I could have a longer cord for her cell phone. They're also very pleasant. They introduce themselves and even try to joke with the residents. We're getting a better quality of care for my sister now than what she was getting before this. The pricing was the same but what we're getting and the facility, the cleanliness, the largeness of it, everything about it is at least 60% better than what we had at the other place.

I like Vista Del Mar Senior Living. They have an area where you could go out and get some fresh air and be able to walk around without any worries. At least if you get up in the middle of the night, you can go outside and walk around and feel safe. The residents were friendly, and the staff was very, very friendly. They have it sit-down restaurant style. They will come to your table and take your order basically. The rooms were great. They were huge. There was enough space for two people in there, and had extra space leftover. The place was very, very clean.

My father is at Vista Del Mar Senior Living. The layout and upkeep are good. The staff are all friendly and caring. It's a very good facility. So far, I've got no complaints. The staff have all been very helpful. They have daily games and movies, multiple movie rooms, and multiple viewing rooms. They have outings where they take the patients places if needed. They have libraries and game rooms. I've been in a couple of the rooms and all through the facility, and the facilities are really nice. The value is fantastic.

My father moved into Vista Del Mar Senior Living. I loved working with the staff there. They were very helpful. They lay out the path for me of how to do certain things and how to work through the process. They have large rooms and a beautiful garden and it's very well kept. The staff there seemed to know the residents by name. They were friendly toward the residents. The residents seem to enjoy it there and that was a big thing for us. The rooms are pretty big. My dad has a private room, so that was nice. It's clean, and well kept and the furniture is updated. The shared room had a walk-in closet with a private bathroom. It was large and clean with laminate floors and it was nicely kept. We were able to bring our own furniture and our own refrigerator. There's a lot of freedom for an assisted living place. They have a nice courtyard with outdoor furniture and gazebos, so it's shaded. It helps for visitation hours during COVID. They also have a gigantic lobby, almost like a cafe, but it's huge. It looked posh. Mom liked it so much that she's thinking about, after her surgery, maybe moving in there.

My husband moved into Vista Del Mar Senior Living last month. I liked that they returned your calls. That's a big, major thing. And they're nice, they're friendly. My husband, every time I go, looks clean and changed and bathe. He can bathe himself, but he looks well. He has dementia, and I know he can't do a lot of things, but I see that he's well, he's well taken care of. I haven't tried the food, but he seems to like it and he's picky. They have a parking lot on the side. It's easy to access. They are very secure because when you walk in, you have to be buzzed in. They take your temperature, they make sure you are well. If my spouse has the sniffles or if he isn't feeling well, they let me know how his day is going. They keep you on top with that. They are on top of that, they let you know how he is, or how he is doing. They have programs there. They have a room where they have movies, they have activities. My husband can't participate, but I do see the other seniors doing well.

I really liked Vista Del Mar Senior Living. It was a good fit for my dad, except it was too far for me. The rooms were nice and big, and the staff was amazing and very friendly. It was a very homely community. The grounds were very nice, and they had a garden. They have outings and an activities director, who I spoke to. They have a lot of parties, get-togethers, and little happy hours with punch and stuff. Everybody knew each other there, and I was very impressed. The staff member knew everybody's name. They would come up to him as he was giving me the tour, and he knew everybody by name. It was a plus for me.

I went to Vista Del Mar Senior Living. It's really nice. It looks good. It's clean. It's well kept, plenty of activities, and things of that nature; it's pretty good. The staff is very professional, knowledgeable, and were pretty good. His name was Reggie. I did take a look at some of the rooms. They're clean, and also the staff was friendly. They have exercising, dance, Zumba, and outside activities like walking. It's a pretty big place. They have different crafts, so it's pretty good.

Vista Del Mar Senior Living is clean and the people were friendly. It seems they have a lot of activities. There's a courtyard inside. There's a grassy area. The staff members were very positive and knowledgeable. It's not super beautiful, but they do well with what they have. They had murals on the walls of people dancing in the 20's and things like that, which I think is good for older people. It looked clean, and the outside looked well-kept. It had some sort of snack bar that was run by residents. They have a big dining room.

My friend is set up in Vista Del Mar and she's very happy. She can't read the clock, so the staff members come and remind her about meal times and what have you. She can also go out when we pick her up, and they also go out and do lots of things with the residents, like they go shopping or they go out to lunch. They also take her to her regular errands so she can go out and about. Overall she's doing OK. Some of the residents that are lonely sit around in the lobby, but it is what it is. We looked at several different places and this community is the one she wanted, because she could have an apartment that looks out on the skyline and it has a little outside seating area. The staff is very nice and really accommodating. The rest of the other things don't matter, it's the care that's important. I haven't eaten there but my friend eats there twice a day. She's now eating meals regularly, and when they go shopping she doesn't even want potato chips and stuff like that to take back to her room, because she has a refrigerator there. The surroundings are adequate. There's a big outdoor garden with nice furniture in it where people can go outside and sit and visit. They also allow pets.

My father has been placed in Vista Del Mar's assisted living and they have been wonderful. The staff is very helpful and friendly, they call to make sure that everything is going OK, and they want to see if there's anything extra that they can do or provide. I'm very pleased with them, and everything there is fine. They have many activities there. He gets physical therapy, they have card games, dominoes, chair exercises, movies, dances, and casino nights. They have a wide variety of activities; today they had a barbecue for Father's Day and they invited the family members to come participate. They really are very good.

My mother is now at Vista Del Mar Senior Living. We are happy with them. They're very nice and very caring people. My mother's room is a shared room. Activities are very limited because of the residents' very limited understanding. We see them in the common room where they usually have their meals and snacks. If the weather is nice, they spend time outside.

My friend is staying at Vista Del Mar and she likes it. Of all the places we visited, it has the higher level of caregiving, and they have more caregivers. They have a nice dining room and a lot of activities. The gentleman who runs the place has a lot of experience and he knows me and my friend. The cost is also comparable for what she has. She has a shared, but nice room. It's a very good place and I highly recommend it.

Unfortunately, my dear grandfather needed more care than we could provide him in his home and we had to find a suitable home for him. After researching and visiting 9 other facilities, I settled on Vista Del Mar. I chose it because: The staff seemed very caring and warm Amazing amenities and events for the residents (restaurant, bar, courtyard, music, prayer group, movie rooms, pets allowed and more - like a resident dog named Jake who was very calm and loving!) He was able to have his own (very nice sized) room (with balcony!) The staff provided dignified and thorough service throughout his last six months and contacted us often and let us know when services needed to be added on (as needed). Open communication and professionalism from staff is all I ever encountered. Thank you for giving my grandther the loving care he deserved.

I was not impressed with Vista Del Mar. The halls to the memory care center needed painting. They were renovating parts of it, but once I got into the memory care, I thought it was very cold and uninviting. I didn't know how educated the staff members were to the problems of Alzheimer's and dementia patients. The best thing about them was Jake, their therapy dog.

Provider Response

Lisa, Thank you for the feedback. We’re sorry you had a less than favorable impression of our Memory Care community as you caught us in the middle of a renovation. Since your review we’ve opened up a large, landscaped, outdoor seating area and adding additional programming to our activities. Our Memory Care staff receive additional training, specific to memory impairments, which exceeds required State minimums and industry standards. We’d love for you to come back and check out our changes (and get a few kisses from Jake).

The decor is overall very nice (colors, fixtures), but I agree with other reviews that it definitely is not clean, and desperately needs updating. I saw many scuffs on the walls and base mouldings, a huge hole in one wall , and a broken mirror on one of the decorative hallway displays that our tour guide hadn't even noticed. The staff was very friendly and the tour guide was very engaged and helpful. Rooms seemed very outdated, although the size of the largest was very nice. Nice courtyard and activity rooms. Love Jake the dog. Residents seemed friendly and engaged.

I checked out a few places for my mother, and the reason I chose Vista del Mar is because the atmosphere is positive and they are attentive to their residents. When it comes to the administration of medication, the residents don’t have to come to the window to get the medication because the medication is brought to them, and I like that. They are also very attentive when they serve meals, so that they are aware that the meals are going to be served, and the seniors can come and eat communitarily, which is really nice. It is contemporary in appearance as well. There have been a number of occasions where the staff has interacted with my mother both casually as well as under circumstances that can be somewhat acute, and they handled themselves not only professionally but very affectionately; that showed a good-hearted spirit in the staff. They provide transportation, and they will take her to her doctor’s appointments. They also provide three meals a day. They have pedicures, manicures, and a hair salon. They have laundry services that she can do independently or with their assistance, but just as well, they will pick it up and do the laundry for her, if she chooses. They also have a nice courtyard with gazebo and other seating and such, so people can relax in the sun, and it is in the center of the structure and very nicely set up. They also allow pets.

I had to wait for almost 40 minutes to be able to see Vista Del Mar Senior Living. I had a good tour of the place, and the rooms seemed OK, but it wasn’t so clean. The dining room looked nice, and the menu looked OK. It looked like they hadn’t done any remodeling for a while. They need to improve on punctually assisting potential clients and work on refurbishing some of the furniture in the rooms. But, they were very nice and very accommodating.

The dining room at Vista Del Mar Senior Living is really nice. The food is delicious. They come back around and check up on you to make sure you have your drink or if you want some more to drink. They have an activity board out in the lobby every morning, and they also give you a calendar, but they remind you by having an activity board mounted. The staff is very good. They are always walking the halls to make sure nobody is having problems or dismayed or anything. They do have one site where if the person has gotten really bad about wandering off and they keep that site locked. It has a nice courtyard. There are people sitting out in the courtyard, and I really like that. It’s just a really homey place.

In my opinion "Vista Del Mar Senior Living" is one of the best senior living communities around. They provide a great home away from home atmosphere for the elderly , three meals a day, house cleaning ,weekly activities and outings. I also can't say enough good things about the caring and supportive staff. They have managed to provide me with the comfort of knowing that my mom is being well taken care off.

Vista Del Mar wasn’t a good fit for my brother. The entrance was on an incline; he’s in a wheelchair and only has use of one hand, so that wouldn’t have been a comfortable situation for him. I saw the general living areas, and I went into one room; they were nice. I did see the movie room, the dining room, the activity room, and one of the offices. I did not see their menu, and it wasn’t pointed out to me. It was their lunchtime when I went there, but it was starting just as I was leaving. The atmosphere was nice. It had somewhat fancy lights.

The Best Senior Living in California! I had looked allover from Loma Linda, Torrance and Los Angeles for a place that would provide a safe environment for my mom and I found Vista Del Mar. Thanks to Brad Dehaan for providing a place with great staff. Special thanks to Suzette Silverio and Charlene Cailao who helped make my moms stay enjoyable. They really "DO" care for your loved one! To all the families at large, who are considering placement of a loved one in a senior living community........be prepared for self adjustment, family adjustment and the adjustment of your loved one. Adjustments in life are a given. We all have make adjustments and when we are fortunate enough to have time, good counsel, finances and support all in place; they are usually easier to execute. Vista Del Mar has been an amazing support to this eventful process. The staff at Vista Del Mar, (VDM) are transition specialists, if you will. They were considerate, helpful, intuitive, patient, resourceful. My concerns were never belittled, but careful consideration was given to each concern. I desire for my mom to have certain dietary controls and that is an area that the staff is working to acknowledge and respond to. I first visited VDM with a friend, whose grandmother lived in the community. The first fews weeks/months were an adjustment for her and there were times when she didn't want to transition, but VDM did their part in providing loving care, activities, a bright clean and happy environment and she then learned to appreciate the efforts of the staff and overall community. It was important to me that there was life, a level of excitement, opportunities to go on excursions and continue to look forward to the next big thing...whatever that was. I am always warmly welcomed in the community and even I look forward to seeing Suzette, Charlene and the many other staffers, who are so kind to my mother. My mother had been living in her home of 40 years, so transitioning from her home to a senior living community was a process that I didn't expect to be so emotional. Did I cry a little, when I first stood in the room that my mom would be living...Yes. Did I wonder if I was doing the right thing concerning my mother's care...Yes. Am I glad now that I have made this transition FOR and WITH my mom....Yes! I believe that my mom is in good hands. Vista Del Mar is a loving community. I have found that I look forward to seeing some of the other residents and offer a gleeful "Hello". It is my intent to be a part of the community myself, by volunteering and being a part of efforts to bring more happiness into the lives of the residents there. Vista Del Mar is now extended family to us and the community will extend itself to you too, should you make a decision for placement in this senior living community.

Once it was clear that my father could no longer live at home, I started looking for the right assisted-living facility for him. I searched for a few facilities online and called a few others, but I couldn't find what I was looking for. I stumbled upon Vista Del Mar one afternoon. I was able to visit the facility the next day. I liked the activities and the amenities offered to the residents. I also like that the facility is large, but not so big that residents can get lost in the crowd. All of the employees have been great with my dad. I'm really glad I found this place!

I am very happy that I made the decision to move my husband to Vista Del Mar. Everyone has been welcoming both to me and to my husband. The room is beautiful and he has the privacy he has craved for over a year at the prior facility.. He has enjoyed the food and the feeling that he is still capable though challenged with dementia.. I would highly recommend Vista Del Mar.

My visit at Vista Del Mar was all good. The staff who assisted me was OK. My dad was in this facility, but it wasn’t such a nice experience, so I took him out. Their accommodations are apartment-style.

My brother is in the hospital right now, but he will be going to Vista Del Mar. This is a very nice place. It is really big. If you want where you can walk around and you want a large facility, this is a very nice place for that. The dining room looks like a really nice restaurant with pretty furniture and nice lighting. I don’t know anything about the staffing, but so far, they have been very nice. They have a room right off the front door, and every time I walk in, there is always something going on. They remodel it too. The floors are nice. For a big place, I think it is very nice, and the management seems really attentive. I just get the feeling like if you need anything or if you have anything to complain, they really listen to you.

I visited this facility

I visited Vista Del Mar and the first thing that turned me off was I had to climb upstairs to get into the entrance and for old people like us that was kind of tough. It was not an easy flight. The rooms were spacious, the staff was good and the dining area was OK. Everything looked clean and the price was good too.

I liked the location of Vista del Mar and the amenities that they offer. The staff is great. They are hard working and very accommodating. The rooms are spacious, open, airy, and modern. I love the dining setup. There are a couple different options, and they have people available to assist those who need assistance in the dining area. When I walk through, it is very pleasant smelling and never ever messy. It is always very well-kept.

My first impression at Vista Del Mar is great. The guy who accommodated us was great. He was really good, and he explained their activities. They do take their residents to different places, take them to shopping, or go on trips, and I like that one. The apartments were nice.

We already found one, and my mother has already moved in to Vista Del Mar. We chose it because of the levels of care offered, the cleanliness, and the price. The rooms are large. It is like one large studio room with its own bathroom, and it has two large closets. She has a sliding glass door that opens to a balcony which overlooks a garden area. They have a lot of activities, but she hasn't participated in them yet. But every day whenever we go visit her, we see the posted activities. The staff seemed really caring. They are affectionate with her and seem to be taking good care of her. They are very attentive. Sometimes the hallways can have this odor at certain times of the day though.

Jim has MS, and although he hated to give up the "independence" of living in his own apartment, he knew that he just wasn't able to function on his own any longer. As his principal care giver, I am very much relieved that he now has the care he needs to function, and that the staff by and large respects his autonomy and treats him with care and respect. I feel that he is doing better in this environment than when he was in his own apartment.

So far, Mom is off to good start. This is extremely busy facility. Mom moved in to the dementia unit (Memory Lane) in early July 2014 and she is doing so much better. Before placing mom here, I took care of her for the last 3 years as she declined. During the last month, I have finally been able to get my life back together. They recently got a labradoodle named Jake who lives in memory lane. Mom loves Jake and it has made the transition so much easier. I have eat there a couple of times and both the fish was over-cooked. I have to say for the money, this place is a deal.

Vista Del Mar is a large building. I think it’s three stories. It’s pretty nice inside and pretty homey. They charge quite a bit, though. It was pretty clean. They have small rooms, middle class rooms, and they have suites. The people that I know who have gone there like it. They allow pets. I’ve heard the food is better. The people I met seemed sincere and nice.

I can't say enough about how amazing the staff of this place is. Only a couple days after my mother moved in, the elevator near my mother's room went out of service for maintenance for two weeks. The staff wheeled her down for meals every day until The elevator was fixed and she could use her walker. Ibrahim, Suzette, Reggie, Sidonia, India, James....the list goes on and on with people who care. It's a big busy place. But the caring is real. It's not easy to transition a loved one into assisted living. But, I am glad we chose Vista Del Mar.

My father-in-law wasn't happy at Vista del Mar at all. They had lots of cockroaches, the food was not very good, and it wasn't clean. The positive thing is that you're allowed to bring your dog. His room was large, which was great. It was a good sized room, but he found them to be non-accommodating, and the cockroaches are a big problem. He didn't really participate in many of the activities. They said that the buses would take them or they had transportation, but it turned out that it was really one guy who you had to book way in advance. So the transportation wasn't as good as he had thought when we signed up. The maintenance guy was nice. He did not like the kitchen staff at all. He found them to be non-accommodating and not very easy to work with. They could improve on the overall quality of food and cleanliness.

I placed my mom here with the assurance that the aides would orient her and escort her to meals. Every promise made to me was broken. During the 7 days I kept my mother there, she had dinner once. I was there 3 mornings and no aide escorted her to anything, certainly not meals. I took her home without advising anyone and I had to call them the next day to inform them she wasn't there. Sedonia misrepresented their services as she smiled and acted like she cared. I went in one day on crutches carrying 3 heavy bags. I passed 5 staff people while attempting to navigate to the 3rd floor and not one offered to help me. Unless your loved one can take care of their own needs, do NOT place them here. They will not be fed, will not be given a seat at a table in the dining room and will not be adequately cared for. I felt like Sedonia acted like a used car salesman. My mother is a human being and deserves to be treated with respect and care.

it's been about 4 months since my mother moved into vista del mar and things have finally settled down. Although the transition was not an easy one or her Denise, Sidonia, and India did a great job to keeping me updated and helping her even though she is frequently confused. The facility is clean, remodeled and appears to well run. Although the menu is not always to moms liking (she is picky) she can also get a fresh fruit plate or a tuna melt.

Suzette toured me and she was fantastic. The facility was clean and the 3rd floor was amazing. This place was better than the other facilities in long beach.

On the positive side, Vista Del Mar has a very nice outdoor courtyard area in the middle of the facility. The hallways are very dark and gloomy. They have dark carpeting that doesn't look clean. The room that was shown to me was under construction, so that was not very pleasant. I did go into the dining room and I understand that the residents have assigned seating which I found unfortunate because it's more of an institutional kind of feel to it. The guy that gave me the tour was very nice. It seems like they are trying to do some updating.

Vista Del Mar was excellent. I've been to their cafeteria. The staff was great. But it was not a locked down facility, so it just did not suit my needs. My sister is bipolar schizophrenic and refuses to take her medication. And she will walk out the door because she wants to go home.
